MOUNT VERNON QUILTERS UNLIMITED
“Chesapeake Bay Crab Mola” WORKSHOP
Wednesday, September 26, 2012 11:30 – 3:30
Teacher: Phyllis Twigg Hatcher
Molas
– the pictorial fabric art of the San Blas Islands off the east coast of
Panama. They’re vibrant, colorful,
creatively cut and stitched layers of cloth that the Kuna women traditionally
wear as front and back panels on their blouses. Today, the panels are also made for sale and incorporate all
sorts of designs from nature and the Kuna culture. Annapolis quilt expert Phyllis Twigg Hatcher will do a program
about molas for MVQU on Tuesday, September 25, and she will also explain how to
include molas in your own quilt making, so bring along any molas you might
own.
In
addition, Phyllis will conduct a half-day workshop for Mount Vernon members
from 11:30 (check-in) – 3:30 to learn how to create a mola yourself. This new workshop was a sell-out two months
ahead of the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Show in Hampton this year. Create
this Chesapeake Bay Crab Mola using only 4 fabric squares. It is mostly reverse applique with a tiny
bit of regular applique under the eyes. Phyllis also teaches "stuffed
eyeballs" (just like stuffed berries) which are not true to Panama but are
her "Chesapeake Bay" touch. There is optional embroidery which is not
done in class. Class maximum is
20. Class location: Heritage
Presbyterian Church, 8503 Fort Hunt Rd, Alexandria, VA 22308.
Phyllis
is a certified AQS appraiser, is the author of “The Victorian Redwork Sampler
Quilt,” has curated several small quilt exhibits at national quilt shows and
museums, is past president of two guilds, and is on the Board of Directors of
the Quilters’ Hall of Fame in Marion, Indiana.
She lectures on quilt history, presents lectures and conducts workshops.
