MOUNT VERNON QUILTERS UNLIMITED
WORKSHOP:  “Interlock, Revisited”
Wednesday, March 27, 2013   9:30 – 3:30
Teacher: Georgia Bonesteel

Spend the day learning from famed quilter Georgia Bonesteel, the creator and host of the long-running TV series “Lap Quilting”, produced by University of North Carolina Center for Public Television.  Georgia is the author of numerous books, and has taught a wide variety of styles and techniques throughout the world.  MVQU is honored to host Georgia’s workshop “Interlock, Revisited” on Wednesday, March 27, 2013 from 9:30 to 3:30.  Class maximum is 25.  Class location: Heritage Presbyterian Church, 8503 Fort Hunt Road, Alexandria, VA 22308.

A longtime seamstress, Georgia attended Iowa State University and graduated from Northwestern University.  A Home Economics and Merchandizing degree enabled her to get a job in the Fashion Department of Marshall Field & Co. Marriage and three children took the Bonesteels to New Orleans where she renewed her love of sewing. There, she was a guest on a television series, Sewing Is Fun, sponsored by Sears and Roebuck & Co. where she learned valuable television skills.

Her first quilting venture was Cajun Quilters, located in the French Quarter.  She sold one-of-a-kind quilted patchwork evening bags that she made from necktie scraps.  After moving to North Carolina in 1972 she became interested in full-size quilts and began teaching at Blue Ridge Community College in Hendersonville. Soon after that her mother suggested she share her teaching skills on television. The rest is history. The “Lap Quilting” show is now in its 12th series. In 2003, Georgia became the 34th honoree inducted into the Quilters Hall of Fame.  For many years, Georgia and her husband, Pete, were the owners of Bonesteel’s Hardware and Quilt Corner, long a focus for quilters in the western Carolinas.  Their current home in Flat Rock includes the Lap Quilting TV-production studio.  Learn more about Georgia at www.georgiabonesteel.com.

On Tuesday, March 26, 2013, Georgia will present a lecture to Mount Vernon QU entitled “Stitch By Stitch…Anything’s A Cinch.”  Starting from the beginning, follow the growth and development of The Lap Quilter.  Personal fabric and design pitfalls are revealed as the learning process is explored.  Follow this up on Wednesday, March 27, with a great day of stitching with Georgia.

Early-Bird Special – Starting at the October 9, 2012 business meeting, you can sign up for the “Interlock, Revisited” workshop and take advantage of the Mount Vernon member “early-bird” special!  Get your member-only registration to Co-VPs Barbara Jones and Libby Dudley early and get $10 off the full price.  The full-day workshop is on Wednesday, March 27, 2013, from 9:30 – 3:30, full price is $60; “early-bird” is $50 through December 31, 2012.  Note:  Member registrations in hand or postmarked by “early-bird” closing date will receive the discount price.  Registrations will then open to all and will be full price for all.

WORKSHOP:  “Patchwork Illusions”

Wednesday, May 29, 2013   9:30 – 3:30
Teacher: Karen Combs

Karen’s quilts often take a traditional pattern and give them a twist.  She is intrigued by quilts of illusion and has been designing quilts with a 3-D look for several years.  MVQU is pleased to host Karen’s workshop “Patchwork Illusions” on Wednesday, May 29, 2013 from 9:30 to 3:30. Come spend a day mastering a new perspective!  Class maximum is 25.  Class location: Heritage Presbyterian Church, 8503 Fort Hunt Road, Alexandria, VA 22308.

A native of Michigan, now living in Tennessee, Karen Combs began quilting in 1973 while still in high school. With a degree in library science, she worked at many libraries before finding her calling as a professional quilting instructor, writer and designer.  Karen is the author of Optical Illusions for Quilters (AQS), among other books, including her latest, Celtic Pieced Illusions (AQS).  She has been a fabric designer for almost a decade and her current collection can be seen at her website and at your local quilt shop.   Karen's work has appeared in numerous challenges and magazines, including a quilt featured in recent issue of Quiltmaker Magazine.  Karen travels nationwide to teach her techniques and methods and has appeared on several TV quilting shows.   Learn more at www.karencombs.com

On Tuesday, May 28, 2013, Karen will present a lecture to Mount Vernon QU entitled “Quilts of Illusion.”  Karen will use slides and quilts to show us a world of optical illusions created by quilters.Follow this up on Wednesday, May 29, with a full day in another dimension with Karen.  Karen has developed a quick and easy rotary technique that allows you to make quilts with a 3-D look. In class, you will learn how to create her well-known Patchwork Illusions quilt.  Supply List below.

Note: There is a $16 Supply Fee for handouts and rotary templates, payable directly to teacher in class.

MOUNT VERNON IN-HOUSE WORKSHOP:  “Tessellation Techniques”

Wednesday, February 27, 2013   10:00 am – 3:30 pm

Teachers: Ro Coller and Lynn Eccleston

Do you have a stash of nickel squares and haven’t figured out what to do with them?  Then, this class is for you!!  MVQU members Ro Coller and Lynn Eccleston will conduct a workshop on Wednesday, February 27, 2013, from 10 am to 3:30 pm to show you how to magically turn a simple checkerboard of five-inch squares with a three-inch border into a tessellating pinwheel quilt.
Instructors Ro and Lynn say they believe this technique was pioneered by Martha Thompson in her book, Square Dance, which was long out of print, but has been recently rereleased.  Ro has used a modification of Thompson’s method to make a tessellating pinwheel quilt and will be demonstrating that method.  Lynn will be demonstrating how to make a pinwheel quilt using acrylic templates commercially available from Country Schoolhouse (The Lil’ Twister) and June Tailor (Twist ‘n Stitch).  Class maximum is 15.  Class location: Heritage Presbyterian Church, 8503 Fort Hunt Road, Alexandria, VA 22308.

MVQU FEBRUARY 27, 2013 TESSELLATION WORKSHOP
Supply List

Lynn E. and Ro C. will be showing class participants how to construct a tessellating pinwheel quilt.

All class participants will need to bring an already prepared quilt top consisting of a checkerboard of 5" squares and a border. We would suggest a piece using 30 squares, with 5 across and 6 down. Add a 3" wide border all around to complete your pre-class work. Just be careful to use fairly high contrast fabrics and don't place two matching squares together. Diagonal placement is OK. Press seams in alternate directions across the rows. (Pressing the seams open between the rows reduces bulk when you subcut and resew.)

Please bring a sewing machine in good working order, neutral thread, and all other sewing supplies you would ordinarily use for piecing on your machine. There will be ironing stations and enough room to lay out your rows.

The additional supplies you need will depend on the technique you decide to use.
· Lynn will be demonstrating how to make the quilt using acrylic templates commercially available from Country Schoolhouse (The Li'l Twister) or June Taylor (Twist and Stitch). These are also available at many quilt shops and on the web from Amazon or Nancy's Notions, among others. You can also use a generic 4" acrylic template and Lynn will show you how to mark it for use with this technique. If you wish to cut your pinwheels using a rotary cutter, please purchase your acrylic template and bring your mat and cutter to class.

· Ro will be showing the method used in the book Square Dance (books for your perusal will be available during the class). If you wish to use this method, which is basically marking around a template and cutting out the new squares with scissors, you will need to bring a piece of template plastic, a pair of sharp scissors, and a marking pencil (or pencils) which will show up on the fabric you have used in your quilt top.

You will probably finish this portion of your new quilt top in class, so you can bring additional border fabric and add it at the class. Take home a completed top at the end of the day.
See you on February 27. If you have any questions not answered above, please call Ro ( 301-630-3243).

RegistrationStarting at the October 9, 2012 business meeting, you can sign up for the “Tessellation Techniques” workshop.  This special workshop for Mount Vernon members will have a $5.00 registration fee.  Registration forms will be at the MVQU Workshops Desk and then can also be found on the website.  Contacts:  Co-VPs Barbara Jones and Libby Dudley     * Lynn’s charming quilt (shown) was made using the Lil' Twister template and Cherrywood hand-dyed fabrics.
