Charity Update for Calendar Year 2015
MVQU’S 2015 CHARITY SUMMARY
Mount Vernon members were very generous again last year. MVQU donated 101 quilts, 34 receiving blankets, and eight fleece blankets to United Communities Ministry (UCM) during 2015. Numerous taggies, burp cloths, pillowcases, toys, and gift cards were also donated. Sonia Gondol and I made our final 2015 delivery to UCM just in time for their annual Christmas room. Our fleece blankets and taggies were on display for parents’ selection. UCM’s staff was thrilled with Pat Alfredson’s donation of a beautiful hand appliqued/quilted quilt for their 2016 Gala.
Donations for MVQU 2015 fund raising efforts via the HH Auction, annual QU Boutique, and MV Quilt Raffle were also outstanding. Over 20 quilts, and many, many other sewn items were donated.
The Quilt Studio’s donation of almost 100 yards of fabric should allow us to make 2016 even more successful. We distributed over half of the donated fabric to members last week for charity quilts. I will bring the remaining fabric to our business meeting on the 12th for members to select for charity projects. I encourage you to visit The Quilt Studio if you have not already done so. It is located in Fair City Mall, 9600 Main St, Fairfax and is the largest quilt shop in the area I have been to.

Charity Workshops
On September 2, Dianne Tippins and I visited Diane Hall at
UCM in Alexandria to drop off donations MVQU had collected over the last few
months. We donated a total of 37 items
consisting of flannel receiving blankets, baby quilts, burp cloths, and mini
flannel blankets. UCM was extremely
grateful for our donations and will include thanks to MVQU in their next
newsletter.
In 2014, UCM supported over 8500 needy persons. Some of the efforts they welcome our help in
follow:
·
At Risk Families – UCM conducts regular home
visits to “at risk” families with infants until the baby reaches the age of
three. Blankets, baby quilts, and burp
cloths are always needed.
·
Learning
Center - Children who range in age from six weeks to five years old are guided
through developmental at UCM ’s Early Learning Center. Educational and decorative wall hangings will
be hung on their walls to brighten up the center. (Note:
The quilt with the Tinker Bell panel was very well received and will be displayed there.)
·
Domestic
Violence - UCM manages two transitional housing programs, which serve 15 to 20
families fleeing domestic violence. These
programs provide housing up to two years.
Quilts, blankets, and cheerful pillowcases for twin size beds are
needed. (Note: Our “sit and sew” room has a large bin of
donated fleece, which we can use to make simple blankets. I purchased child-themed fleece for the
blanket tops, and flannel for pillowcases on clearance this week, which we can
also use.)
·
Spring
Gala on April 2, 2016 - Last year’s gala raised over $200,000. MVQU donated in 2015 and we should plan on
doing so again in 2016.
·
Holiday
Gift Room – Some of our donations will be held for “Santa” to give to needy
children.
UCM indicated that
our quilts and blankets are often the only new items that at-risk mothers
receive for their babies. The mothers,
and children as they get older, cherish these donations. We can expect to see lots of fabric sales
this holiday weekend. Please remember to
think of these needy children when buying fabric to add to your stash.
Thank You

We will have a project that will be announced at least
two weeks in advance. I will show a
sample of the project at the large meeting downstairs the week before. You can also come and sew on a charity item
of your choice or complete unfinished quilt tops, which others have donated. (I will let everyone know before the meeting
if I have any unfinished quilt tops.)
I have downloaded a number of free patterns and they can
be found on our blog under Charity Workshops.
They are not all baby quilts but can be easily adapted to make them
smaller. The various websites that I
downloaded the patterns from follow:

Baby Burp Cloth Instructions
Fabrics: quilting cotton for top; flannel, fleece, or terry
cloth for back. No batting needed.
Other supplies: a few pins, scissors, thread, bamboo skewer
or chop stick, iron and pressing surface.
Choose two coordinating fabrics of at least 8.5” x 17” per
burp cloth. Fold fabric half way down
the long side with wrong sides together, and press. Do the same for the second fabric and layer
them on top of each other at the fold.
Position the burp cloth pattern piece along the fold, pin in 3 places as
marked on pattern, and cut out the two pieces at the same time. Pin along fold line until ready to sew.
Notes on cutting: You can get two burp cloths per fat
quarter, and 10 burp cloths per yard. If
cutting yardage, press complete piece of fabric first. Make the first fold at 8.5” from selvage to
selvage, with wrong sides together as noted above. Do the same with the coordinating fabric and
layer along fold line. When cutting out
burp cloth pattern, make sure the pattern is at least 1” away from the prior
cuts along the fold to allow room for the bulbous ends of the burp cloth. However, do not waste fabric between cuts or
you won’t have room to get 5 burp cloths across the width of the fabric. Once all 5 are cut, reposition fabric to make
another fold at least 8.5” from the closest edges, and repeat the process.
Sizing: You can make the burp cloth larger by sliding the
pattern piece 1-2 inches up from your fold line, and cutting 1-2” wider around
the pattern piece.
Sewing: With the fold
line at the bottom, and raw edges up,
peel back the top and bottom fabrics, leaving a fabric and flannel pair,
right sides together in the middle.
Remove the pin at the fold line, and shake out the fabric, making sure
the pieces align correctly and are positioned
right sides together. In the
middle on one side, place two pins 3” apart.
With coordinating or contrasting thread, sew the long way around from
one pin the other, using a ¼” seam allowance.
MAKE SURE TO INCLUDE BOTH TOP AND BOTTOM FABRICS IN THE SEAM
ALLOWANCE. Remove from machine, turn
right side out through the opening left in the seam line, and run a bamboo
skewer or chop stick all along the seam line from the inside, through the seam
opening. Once smooth, press the burp
cloth, turning in the seam allowances at the opening. Starting at the opening, top stitch around
the whole burp cloth, staying right along the outer edge…if using your ¼” foot,
place top stitching at 1/8”. Press again
to remove the ripple effect from the top stitching.
Serging: If you are using a serger, simply place the 2
pieces of fabric with wrong sides together, and serge once all the way around
the outer edges on the right sides of the two pieces. No turning, no top stitching.

Charity Workshop
Charity Workshop – September 30, 2014
Our first charity
workshop of the year will be held Tuesday, Sept. 30, at Hollin Hall Senior
Center in our main floor meeting room from 11 a.m. till 3:30 p.m. All
MVQU members are welcome to attend, whether or not you are working on a charity
quilt. Our charity efforts this year will feature either fat quarters or
pre-printed panels. The first pattern I have found for us is a free
pattern available from the Fat Quarter Shop website ( http://www.fatquartershop.com/free-quilt-patterns)
and is called Fat Quarter Fizz. The pattern is attached, or from the parent site above, and also
available directly at:
A YouTube video tutorial for how to do the pattern is at:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6bNFkjKJKrU&feature=youtu.be
. The pattern is available in multiple sizes, and I would recommend
either the crib quilt (36 1/2" square; requires 6 fat quarters) or the
small lap quilt (48 1/2" x 54 1/2"; requires 12 fat quarters).
If you prefer to use a
pre-printed panel, feel free to come with your quilt sandwich made, and
practice machine quilting. The guild will provide an ironing board and
iron. Please bring your own project and supplies to work on, as well as a
bag lunch. We look forward to seeing everyone, and an enjoyable day of
stitching together.

October 2013 Charity Workshop
Charity Workshop – October 22, 2013 –
11 am to 3 pm
The first MVQU Charity workshop of 2013 is
scheduled for October 22, to be held in the first floor meeting room from 11:00
a.m. till about 3 p.m. The project is a pieced quilt
which uses 1 yard each of 4 fabrics. Please read through the instructions (links below) to familiarize
yourself with the project as you select your fabrics. One set of
instructions is taken directly from the book Super Simple Quilts #2 by
Alex Anderson & Liz Aneloski (with copyright permission). The second
set of instructions are my re-write using strip piecing techniques to speed up
construction of the quilt top. Please print out both sets, and if you
have any questions, please contact Lynn Miler at philiplakier@msn.com. Please bring your precut fabric, machine, extension
cord and supplies, and a bag lunch on Oct. 22. Two ironing boards
and irons will be supplied.
