Show and Tell - January 11, 2011

Mary Mazzuchi brought her Teddy Bear Baby Quilt. The friendship stars feature a small teddy bear print.

Mary also showed us "Brandon's Penn State Quilt." It is a sampler in Penn State colors.

Below is Patricia Bolton's " Glory Bound" whch she made to donate to this years Air Force Charity Ball Silent Auction. The quilt is made with Civil War reproduction fabrics.

Pat Alfredson brought her "Bleeding Hearts Bonsai" which is based on a Susan Dulaney pattern.

Sierra Smith displayed her "Homespun Flowers" quilt. As a bit of interest she told us the stitching on the flowers which we refer to as the blanket stitch is called the briar stitch in Kentucky.

Sierra's "Rocket Ship" was made at a workshop with Margaret Miller. (Those who were at the meeting know the secret about this quilt)

Sierra's third quilt was very special. The quilt was pieced by her great-grandmother and quilted by her grandmother. The quilt features fabrics which were used in her mothers dresses. Sierra worked to restore the quilt by replacing some of the patches which had deteriorated. She also added a new wide binding since the blocks near the edges were well worn.

Carol Kunkel brought a baby quilt she made for a co-worker's new baby girl. Check out the cute
bears!

Laura Geiser presented this patchwork quilt with squares on the bias and stripes .

Laura's second quilt used squares on the bias and 4-squares patches.

Rebeca Heinje brought her unnamed quilt which she plans to enter in the quilt show. Her ome comment is "Its Done! - well Almost." We also learned a new adage "Finished is better than perfect."

Angie Miller brought 3 Christmas gift block quilts. The quilts were for her Mother, her Sister, and herself. The pattern is from our November block challenge. The fabrics used were 2010 Robert Kaufman.

Note - the picture will be replaced when Angie sends me a new one. Sorry - the bottom quilt is upside down ... Agnes

President's Message

It seems just like yesterday there was growing concern over Y2K and now it is 2011. Wow, how time flies. Speaking of time, how are you progressing on this year’s challenge? The big reveal day is February 8, 2011.

Before we go running off to talk about all the wonderful activities coming up in the New Year at Mt. Vernon, I would like to extend a great big thank you to Barbara Zygiel and her helpers for a wonderful Holiday Luncheon. We all enjoyed a wonderful afternoon of good food and conversation. At the luncheon we collected $170 worth of gift cards for Hollin Hall to distribute. The cards were delivered on December 20th to UCM and Good Shepherd Housing.

Please reserve Saturday, March 19th, for Mt. Vernon QU, as we will be hosting this year’s Quilt-In. Anne Poulin is chairing this activity and as the date draws nearer she will let us know where she needs assistance.

This year we will be registering our quilts for the Quilt Show electronically. See details in this newsletter on the “how-to” for this process. It is also time to submit ads for the program. At the luncheon the membership expressed their desire to continue with a half page ad in this year’s program. Ads in the Quilt Show Program help to defray the cost of producing the program. Please consider recommending advertising in the program to your service providers, i.e. cleaning service, landscaper, hairdresser, etc. You can find information on advertising on the QU website under QU Show. I encourage you to keep checking the QU Show page for updates about the show and classes being offered. You can see this year’s raffle quilt on this page.

Thanks to Lynn Eccleston and Gigi Corbin, we have a full calendar of Lectures and Workshops for the next five months. Workshops can fill quickly, so get your registration in soon after the announcement.

I look forward to seeing you all at the business meeting on January 11th.

Lynne

March 19, 2011 12:30-5:00 pm - Annual QU Quilt-In

“A CELEBRATION OF FRIENDSHIP!”

The theme for the 2011 Annual QU Quilt-In is “A Celebration of Friendship.” This is an especially exciting day as quilters representing all eleven QU Chapters come together! Bring a hand project (no machines) to enjoy while you make new friends and keep the old!

Never been to a Quilt-In? It is a day to share in a QU block exchange, door prizes, show-n-tell, a game or two, and wonderful food provided by your quilting friends!

This year we have a special new friend, Lynne Wilder, to share the day with! Lynne is a quilt appraiser and will be available for individual appointments during the Quilt-In hours. Please contact her ahead of time to schedule your appointment. (See details below.)
  • This year’s block exchange is the Friendship Star. For the star, use any scraps of your choice. For the background, use any off-white that reads as a solid. Make one or more blocks for the exchange! The more you make, the greater the chance of you winning a selection of blocks to take home! Go to www.quilterscache.com and follow the free directions for the traditional 12” Friendship Star.
  • We encourage each chapter to donate at least one item for a door prize, such as, fabric, quilt gadgets, patterns, new books, and gift certificates. Bring a new item that you would be happy to receive. The Quilt-In committee will have some door prize surprises of its own! Come see what we have hidden behind Door Number One! Think BIG!! And speaking of prizes – if you travel in the HOQ Lane (High Occupancy Quilting) and bring a friend or two in your vehicle, each of you will receive a special gift celebrating your friendships!
  • To make this extra fun and to celebrate the tradition of quilting, we hope you will participate in show-n-tell! Share quilts you have that tell the story of your friendships – a progressive or round-robin, block exchange, memory or signature quilt, or a gift to or from a friend.
  • For refreshments, please bring an appetizer or dessert to share. Food should be in a container of your choice, cut for individual servings. Please provide any serving utensil you may require. Cutlery, paper products, and bottled water will be provided.

The Quilt-In will be on a Saturday this year to honor National Quilting Day! We hope to see you at a new venue: the Hollin Hall Community Center, 1500 Shenandoah Road, Room 112, Alexandria, VA. The Center is located off Fort Hunt Road around the corner from our very own fabric-filled Variety Store!! This event is being organized for you and your friends by Mount Vernon QU. Contact Anne Poulin, MVQU, at AnneEP@cox.net or 703-799-4967.

Quilt Appraiser, Lynne Wilder, charges $20 for a written appraisal and $10 for an oral appraisal (cash or checks only). She allows for 30 minutes per quilt. The first appointment at the Quilt-In will begin at 12:30. You may reach Lynne directly at: LJWFCVA@aol.com or 703-451-5503 to schedule your appointment. If you have a quilt you need appraised before our March date, please feel free to contact Lynne for additional dates and times.

Big QU Quilt Show Updates

38th Annual Quilters Unlimited Quilt Show - 3 – 5 June, 2011
Dulles Expo Center South Building

Happy New Year ladies! I’m sure you’re all looking forward to our quilt show in June. Please take a chance to look at our website. The first week in January we will have our class listing and registration form on the website under educational opportunities. Your registration form will need to be copied and sent in to Eileen Linares. We are offering a wide array of classes. I’m sure there is something for everyone.

Please note that we have a new section on our web site for those that might wish to advertise in our program. If you are interested in advertising in the program please be sure and click on the form. If you know of other individuals that might be interested please print off the form and give it to them or reference them to our web site.

Our listing of vendors will also appear on the website NLT 1 January, 2011. Look for them just under where our corporate sponsors are listed. We have a wide variety of vendors, many of whom you may not have seen before. We are excited about the venue.

Quilt registration will begin December 17, 2010. You will need to go to www.QUShowEntry.com, for our on line quilt registration form. Please complete the form and bring it with you when you meet with you chapter quilt collector for measurement and photographing of your quilts. Note: The information provided on your registration form will be automatically provided to the Layout and Design coordinator to be attached to your quilt. So be extra careful to check your spelling. You will not receive a copy of your card prior to seeing it in attached to your quilt in the show.

If you have any problems please contact your quilt show collector. They have been trained to help you with your registration. If you don’t know who your collector is please ask you chapter President.

Please keep reviewing our QU web site. Each month we are featuring a teacher of the month. By offering this we hope to provide you with the opportunity to get to know a little about your teacher and her special techniques. Her web site will also be listed.

Look for Maureen Gray, our volunteer coordinator, to be coming to visit you chapter. Remember our show volunteers get a discounted pass for volunteering. We need YOU to volunteer.

Show Chairman

The New Way to Put Your Quilt in the Quilt Show!

www.qushowentry.com/register

Big QU has purchased the same computer software used by some of the big professional shows, so we can automate the entry process. This will make it easier for the hardworking Layout Committee. The requested information about each quilt will remain the same as in previous years.

You can register up to 6 quilts. Please register all your quilts in one session. Before you login to the website (www.qushowentry.com/register) to register your quilt, have all your facts ready before you start i.e. your quilt’s title/name, description, technique(s) used, priority (if registering multiple quilts), name of designer(s) or pattern if not original, name of Challenge if applicable, names of others who worked on the quilt. On the website you can download a PDF file of the online form. It is recommended that you do this for each quilt you want to register to be sure you have all your facts. On the website you can learn what are “Acceptable Entries” and what is considered “Show Ready”.

Registration is a multi-step process. Here’s what to expect:

  1. Enter information about yourself

· Name, Address, Telephone, Email, QU Membership

  1. Enter information about your quilts

· Title/Name, Category, Description of Item, Techniques, Priority, Challenge Information, Insurance Value, Sale Price, Other Quilters/Pattern Information

· You can register up to 6 quilts. Registration does not guarantee your quilt will be in the show if you register more than one quilt. This is why you are asked to prioritize your quilts. If more quilts are registered than the show can handle lower priority quilts may be excluded.

  1. Finish the registration

· Print your confirmation statement twice. The Quilt Collector will need to keep one copy and you’ll want one for your records.

· You should also receive a confirmation email.

IMPORTANT
– During the registration process, do not use your browser Back button to go to a previous page as this can cause problems with your registration.

When can you register your quilt?
Now! The website is active until February 21, 2011. After that date you will not be able to register a quilt for the show. You must register your quilt before you bring the quilt to the Quilt Collector to be measured and photographed. If you do not have a computer or have access to the internet, please contact the Quilt Collector to make arrangements for registering your quilt.

When can you have your quilt measured and photographed?
Our Quilt Collector, Patricia Bolton will be available in January on the 11th and 25th immediately following the meetings and during bee hours on the 18th.

In February, Patricia will be available on the 8th immediately following the meeting and during bee hours on the 15th.

If you have questions please contact Patricia Bolton at 703-347-6822 or at patricia4207@gmail.com or Lynne Fishburn at 703-888-2596 or at lsfishburn@gmail.com.

Please submit items to Agnes Purcell, MVQU Newsletter Editor, at mvqu.news@gmail.com or send to 8123 Steadman Street, Alexandria, VA 22309. You may also call her at 703-780-846. The deadline for January’s newsletter is January 1, 2011.

Note: The cardinal block and the PartyAnimals quilt pictured with the articles are from equiltpatterns.com. Patterns and instructions are available at the site.
