STRIPPERS IN A BLIZZARD CHALLENGE

Because of the historical blizzard with record snowfall, we had to cancel our exciting workshop, Strippers Mystery with Gyleen X.Fitzgerald. Quilters, do not let your fabulous fabric choices sit around your studio. Instead, put them to good use in the Strippers in a Blizzard Challenge. Make any pattern or design you wish with your 20 1½” strips and amazing border fabric. Just make sure to use all 20 colors and include at least one border. If you did not plan on taking the class, feel free to join us. The supply list is bellow and posted on the MVQU blog. Let’s plan to do a group show and tell at our business meeting in September and show this challenge in the QU 2017 Show!
Supply List

v 1 to 1 1⁄2 yards of absolutely stunning, interesting or fun fabric. Think floral, bold, geometric or novelty with a noticeable scale. Bring along some 1⁄2 yards of coordinating fabrics in case you choose a larger layout to solve the mystery. Extra tone on tones is another possibility.

v (1)11⁄2”x44”strips (full fabric width) from (20) fabrics that support your “background” fabric for a total of (20) strips. If you are using “Fat Quarters”, cut (3) 1 1⁄2” strips from each fabric. Extra strips are wonderful to have in case you need them. Select fabric based on scale, texture and color and try not to over match.

v EZ Angle ruler or EZ Companion Angle ruler. You can use just about any non-square ruler. Different ruler gives a different outcome.

v door Peephole–from hardware store~$3.00.v Basic sewing supplies and Machine. Rotary cutting supplies with 6” x 24”ruler. Neutral thread (gray, tan). Straight pins. v 36” design wall.

v ~2 yard for backing and binding. (Not used in class.)

v Batting.

v Coordinating quilting thread. (Not used in class unless you are much focused.)

Your Sherlock Holmes’ attitude.

2016-2017 Block Exchange

One of the recent movements in the quilting world is quilts made with all solid fabric.  Have you ever thought you may like to give this a try, but don't have the stash required.  Participate in this Block Exchange you will have the opportunity to step into the wonderful world of quilting with all solid fabric.

Pat Alfredson and Mary Mazzuchi present Mt. Vernon's 2016 Block Exchange—6” Bow Tie Blocks. Participating members will swap blocks at the December Luncheon.

You may swap 1, 2, 3, 4 or more sets, but EACH set you make should be a different “tie” Kona Cotton solid fabric color for the tie portion.  The background fabric must be Kona Shadow.

A set consists of 18 blocks.  The more sets you swap, the larger your quilt. 2 sets = small quilt (36x36); 4 sets = a crib size quilt (48x54) and 6 sets = lap size (54x72)

For each set of blocks that you swap, you need these fabrics:

1/2 yd. Kona Cotton Solid color fabric for the 'Ties'  - not a neutral or black or white

1/3 yd. Kona Cotton Solid -color Shadow fabric for 'Background'

Click HERE to printable instructions for the bow tie block.

To help you get started, we have purchased the required Kona Shadow background fabric. The cost for one yard of the Kona Shadow is $4.85. We also have 1/2 yard cuts of color fabric available at $3.50 per half yard if you need color fabric too for the ties. If you wish to pay by check please make the check out to Mt Vernon Quilters Unlimited and if you wish to pay by cash the exact change would be appreciated. The cost includes all taxes.
