President's Message
Looking ahead, our chapter’s calendar is loaded with lots of activities. On Saturday, March 19th, National Quilting Day, we will host this year’s Annual QU Quilt- In, here at Hollin Hall. Many thanks to Anne Poulin for taking the lead on this event. I’m excited to meet Augusta Cole on March 22nd and hear her lecture and on Tuesday, March 29th we will gather for our charity workshop.
At our March 8th Business Meeting you will have an opportunity to see this year’s Big QU raffle quilt made by the Reston Chapter and purchase your raffle tickets. Take a moment and visit the Quilters Unlimited website to check out all the updates regarding our upcoming Quilt Show. There you will also find a list of all the classes available and view information on the registration procedure. Also, tickets are still available for the Eleanor Burns Lecture.
We will be participating in the Boutique again this year. Ro Coller looks forward to receiving your items. Ask Ro if you need direction on what type of items that have sold well in years past.
Patricia Bolton has done a wonderful job of helping us get all of our quilts registered, photographed and measured for the show. Some of us still need sleeves, labels and labeled pillowcases. All the instructions for these are on the Big QU website. Patricia will be happy to answer your questions.
Looking ahead on June 7th we will hold our year end luncheon at Indigo Landing. Save the date and watch for details.
I’d like to thank Gigi Corbin for planning and collecting the farewell blocks for Bert Garino. Thank you all for participating. Bert was touched by your generosity. She will be missed.
I look forward to seeing you all soon.

A Message from Your Nominating Chair – Anne Poulin
As your Nominating Committee chair, I would like to remind you that this is the time of the year that we need to identify and vote for our new Executive Board. This Board includes the President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Nominating Chair.
I understand that our group is small and that maybe, over the last ten years, you have served in some way or other on the Executive Board. The service is appreciated and so valuable to the success of our Chapter. However, please keep in mind that as a small group, we can't each take one turn and be done and we cannot ask the same people step up over and over. I hope that if you haven't served that you will volunteer your time to one of the Executive positions in appreciation for what previous Board members have done to support your Chapter and its programs. And I ask that if you have served already at some time in your Chapter history, that you will consider stepping up and leading again perhaps as a joint effort with a newer member in the President/Vice President roll. In this way, you help train a newer member for the future. Please consider not what your Chapter can do for you, but what you can do for your Chapter!
Contact either Anne Poulin, or Lynne Fishburn. Thank you for your support.
March Calendar
Mt. Vernon is this year’s host for the annual Quilt In. Anne Poulin has taken the lead for this event. Many hands will be needed for set-up at 11AM and take down at 5 PM, as well as throughout the afternoon.
We will continue the tradition of a block exchange. This year’s block exchange is the Friendship Star. For the star, use any scraps of your choice. For the background, use any off-white that reads as a solid. Make one or more blocks for the exchange! The more you make, the greater the chance of you winning a selection of blocks to take home! Go to http://www.quilterscache.com/F/FriendshipStarBlock.html and follow the free directions for the traditional 12” Friendship Star.
Plan to participate in show-n-tell! Share quilts you have that tell the story of your friendships – a progressive or round-robin, block exchange, memory or signature quilt, or a gift to or from a friend.
For refreshments, please bring an appetizer or dessert to share. Food should be in a container of your choice, cut for individual servings. Please provide any serving utensil you may require. Cutlery, paper products, and bottled water will be provided.
Charity Workshop—March 29, 2011, 11:30-3:30

We need the usual supplies: rotary cutters and mats, ironing boards and irons, and sewing machines with a neutral thread. Of course we need many hands to use those tools. Please come and join in the fun and camaraderie so that we can prepare LOTS of the much needed pouches.
Don’t forget to bring your lunch and a snack to share.

Mt Vernon QU Minutes of Business Meeting February 8, 2011
The meeting was called to order by President Lynne Fishburn at 12:28 PM. Lynne welcomed everyone and reminded them to sign-in out front as well as at our table. She also recognized visitor T Carter of Alexandria.
Approval of Minutes
The first order of business was to approve the January minutes. There were no additions or corrections so they were approved.
Reports
Treasurer – Dotty Eisenhour provided a report on our financial standing. We went over-budget on recent hotel costs, but still doing pretty good overall.
Vice President – GiGi Corbin reminded members that there are a few openings for our upcoming February workshop, “Four Little Landscapes” with Laura Wasilowski on February 23. The March lecture, “A Stroll through my Garden” with Augusta Cole will be held March 22. Unfortunately the workshop was cancelled.
Baltimore Appliqué Society– Cathy Marciano, MVQU member and Baltimore Appliqué Society President, displayed a beautiful hand appliquéd raffle quilt, drawing to be held June 20, 2012. Cathy spoke about the Society, its founding in 1993 and its goals to preserve and document. The Baltimore Appliqué Society meets the third Wednesday of the month at 7:00 PM in Ellicott City, Maryland. Please contact Cathy for further information, or if you would like to purchase a raffle ticket or any of the many reproduction patterns the Society produces from antique quilts.
QU Board Meeting– Lynne Fishburn reported on several board meeting activities. Big QU President Blocks are Due March 15. Lynne is collecting them for Mt Vernon. The Deadline for the next QU Quarterly Newsletter is March 1. Let Lynne know if you would like a topic included. The Annual Meeting is May 5 at the Ernst Community Cultural Center at NOVA Annandale Campus. The speaker will be Augusta Cole. Watch for announcements about workshops. The 2012 Fall Speaker will be Gail Garber. At last week’s board meeting Lynne asked for a discussion on Copyright. After several minutes of back and forth the board discovered what she had discovered back in November—that it is not easy to get a definitive answer to the question, “Can we, a non-profit, sell an item received as a gift that was made from a copyrighted pattern without getting the permission from the owner of the copyright?” Since almost all of the QU Chapters have a fundraiser that sell items donated and made by its members as well as selling items in the Boutique at the Show often made from copyrighted patterns, the Board has formed a group who will be looking into this subject and will report back to the Board hopefully by March. There was also discussion about reworking the Matrix, making it easier to read and understand. We also discussed whether all the current activities that Big QU does are still what the membership wants. Big QU has asked the Presidents to take a Survey to their Chapters. Please take one, review and complete it, and return it at our March business meeting. Lynne will tally responses and report to Big QU. There will be a special exhibit for Quilts of Valor at the QU Show. Reston still needs help at the Hampton Show.
Big QU Raffle Quilt for 2012-2013 – Lynne Fishburn announced that we received our show quilt donated by Lynn Miller and quilted by Ellen Patton. She spoke with Lynn Miller, whose opinion was that the quilt does not live up to the standard that has been set for raffle quilts. Lynne opened discussion as to whether or not we should use this quilt or offer a different one. We do have permission from McCall’s Quilting to auction or raffle this quilt. For the 2010-2011 program year, Big QU had a budget of $1,000 for this event. A vote was taken with the majority in favor of offering a different quilt for the Big QU Raffle to be completed by July 2012. Rosemary Coller, Pat Alfredson and Mary Mazzuchi agreed to form a core committee. They emphasized that they cannot do this alone, and will need membership participation. They hope to present a plan/design for the raffle quilt at the next business meeting. Bert Garino made a motion to include the quilt that Lynn made and Ellen quilted in our Mt Vernon Fall Auction. Catherine Snyder seconded, with the majority in favor. The quilt will be a great addition to our Fall Auction.
Quilt Show Committee– Lynne Fishburn reported on the QU website you can print off forms for advertising in the program. Deadline for submission of ads is February 21st. Eleanor Burns tickets are now $20 and ticket sales are open to the public. Class registration has begun. Forms are available on the website. Vendors for the show are now on the website.
June Luncheon– Catherine Snyder asked that someone step up to manage the construction and distribution of Topiary Blocks for the June Luncheon. In fact, the block design can be altogether different if desired. Blocks collected at the luncheon are usually made into quilt tops and kits to support our Fall Auction. No one offered to lead this effort at the meeting. The June Luncheon will be held at Indigo Landing Restaurant on June 7, at 12:30 PM. The cost to the membership is $20 per person. There is a choice of three meals offered: Chicken, Salmon, or Vegetarian that includes the same salad and dessert, and beverages of soda, iced tea, coffee and hot tea.
Quilt Collector – Patricia Bolton announced that nine (9) quilts have been collected so far. As a reminder, members may register at the QU website. It is important to print and complete the form first before filling in online. The last day to register is February 21. The last day to photograph quilts is February 22. Contact Patricia with any questions.
Quilt Retreat – Rosemary Coller reminded members that the retreat will be held at Bird-In-Hand, Lancaster, PA, early May on a M-T-W. Details to follow.
Fundraising – Rosemary Coller announced that smaller, less expensive items sold better at the Quilt Show Boutique. It is time to be making items to sell. Please limit the number of any one item to about five (5).
Quilt-In March 19, 2011 @ Hollin Hall – Anne Poulin reported that plans for door prizes and activities for the Quilt-In are near completion. Anne hopes there will be a good showing of Mt Vernon members for at least some part of the day, as we are hosts of the event. She reminded members to bring Friendship Blocks (see blog for directions), something to share for Show-n-Tell, and a side dish or dessert. The Quilt-In will be held here at Hollin Hall on Saturday, March 19, from 12:30-5:00 PM.
Community Outreach – Libby Dudley reported that one of our quilts will be on display at Martha Washington Library in March.
Community Service – Lynne reminded members that the next service day is March 29. The plan for this date is to make wheel chair bags. Meet here 11-11:15 AM to setup. Details to follow.
Blog/Newsletter – Agnes Purcell announced that Gail English is willing to split Blog/Newsletter responsibilities with one or two others when she steps down in July. The position could even be split into three positions 1) Pictures 2) Blog and 3) Newsletter. Please let Agnes or Lynne know if you are interested or have any questions. Article deadline is March 1st, submitting early helps. Please send to mvqu.news@gmail.com.
Hospitality – Joyce Keating thanked members Joan Peake, Carol Conahan and Joyce Keating for providing today’s refreshments.

From the MVQU Quilt Collector
We have a total of thirty quilts registered for this year’s QU Show! Impressive I think given the new registration process. Eight of those entries are our Challenge quilts - so we will have a very nice collection for the show.
Please submit items to Agnes Purcell, MVQU Newsletter Editor, at mvqu.news@gmail.com or send to 8123 Steadman Street, Alexandria, VA 22309. You may also call her at 703-780-8460
The deadline for April’s newsletter is April 1.
