Show and Tell - May 11, 2010

Barbara Zygiel and "The Three Bears" made from a panel with borders and extensive hand quilting.

Barbara Dove (left) with her "Woodland Creatures". Created by Barbara, quilted by Linda Leatheraich, with label (on right) by our own Carol Kunkel.

Libby Dudley with her Patchwork Charity Quilt. The quilt was easy, fun, and quick with scrap patches. Sewed by Libby and quilted by Lynne Fishburn.

Bert Garino showed a bit of history. According to Bert: "This is the first quilt I ever made in 1976. I was pregnant with my son. The squares were cut with a scissors after tracing around a metal template. I took a hiatus from quilting for about 24 years until I retired and started quilting in earnest."

Joyce Keating made this black and white quilt with teal borders to go in her daughter Colleen's newly painted bedroom - black and white furniture , teal walls.

Lynn Eccleston made this Chinese Coins quilt for the boutique at the quilt show. She used donated strips and some of her own. Lynne Fishburn quilted it.

Jim Melton brought one of those "finally done" projects. The top of this Kaleidoscope quilt was sewn during the 80's, machine quilted April 10th, and bound yesterday (May 10th). The center of the Kaleidoscope is made from a cotton dress purchased at Goodwill. Jim also showed us his current project featuring the British flag.

Agnes Purcell showed two quilt tops Rectangles with Roses (above) and Braids gone Wild (below).

Mount Vernon Chapter Officers 2009 – 2010

President—Bert Garino Treasurer—Dotty Eisenhour
Vice President/Programs—Ellen Patton Nominating Chair—Libby Dudley
Secretary—Cathy Hanratty Newsletter—Agnes Purcell

President’s Message

The quilt at the left entitled, “A Few of My Favorite Things” is one I recently made as a gift for my sister’s birthday. Actually, making quilts for loved ones and even for people that I don’t know, but know a quilt will bring a smile to their faces, is one of my absolute favorite things to do.

We had a lot of business to cover during our April meeting. First, I would like to congratulate our new slate of officers: President; Lynne Fishburn, Vice Presidents; Gigi Corbin and Lynn Eccleston, Secretary; Angie Miller, and Dotty Eisenhour who will be serving her 2nd term as Treasurer.

Our April Business Meeting was held later than usual this month so that we could host the wonderful Margaret Miller for a lecture and workshop. For those of us fortunate enough to be in her workshop, we saw firsthand her genius in moving blocks around to create her fabulous quilts.

On May 25, 2010 Didi Salvatierre will present her lecture entitled “All About Baskets” and on May 26, 2010 an all day workshop will be held called “Bodacious Baskets”. We are so fortunate to belong to a guild that hosts a variety of national teachers and workshops that appeal to the diversity of our membership….there’s something for everyone. Don’t miss out on our last workshop of the year. Sign-up online, or contact Ellen Patton. Do it today before the class fills up!

The 37th Annual QU Show is rapidly approaching. Joan Bingman will be collecting your quilts on May 18th and the 25th. Check the blog for more information about label and sleeve requirements and be sure to place your quilts in a closeable pillowcase (just add Velcro) that has a label with your name, the quilt’s name and MVQU visible on the outside.

We also need items to sell at the boutique. Ro Coller is asking for finished items such as wall hangings, baby quilts, and baskets to be turned in to her by May 25th. Get together with some friends, go through your stash and make something wonderful to help raise money to help keep our programs and lectures going. And lastly, if you haven’t already done so, please sign up to be a volunteer for the QU Show. The show is put on by all of the chapters, and we need to do our part. Please contact Sandra Rees at quiltrees1@cox.net to add your name to the list.

Annual Membership renewal begins in May. Please print out the form online and bring your check for membership fees to the May meeting.

Enjoy this beautiful spring, and more than a few of your favorite things. Smiles, Bert

Didi Salvatierra Workshop – May 26, 2010

Join us for the last workshop of the year on May 26, 2010. We will be making a wonderful little basket wall hanging. Didi Salvatierra www.didiquilts.com will show us how easy it is to make these colorful baskets and embellish them with readily available items such as large rick- rack or fill them with flowers cut from the large print in a fabric. Your May Baskets can be used all year long or brought out to remind you of spring when you are tired of all the snow that next winter is bound to bring!

The workshop will be held at the Mt Vernon Governmental Center on Parkers Lane from 9:00 until 3:00. Come, make some baskets with me!

Quilt Show Updates

Quilt Show Boutique

From Ro Collier: Once again we will be participating in the Boutique at the QU Quilt Show the first weekend in June. We are soliciting items--finished quilts, quilt tops, baskets of fabric and clever items a quilter would like to buy (either for herself or for a quilting friend). I will be collecting donations up until May 25, 2010, deliver them to the boutique committee and be responsible for the inventory. Please be prepared to price your item. Any unsold items will be returned to us to sell at our Annual Fall Fund Raiser. Last year we made over $400 participating in the boutique and I understand we will have a more desirable space this year. Please put your creativity to work and produce some wonderful items for us to sell. If you have any questions, call me (301-630-3243) or e-mail me at russ.coller@verizon.net. Thanks. Ro

Greetings from the Vendor Coordinator and Committee!

The Quilters Unlimited Quilt Show committees are revving up as we quickly approach the show dates. Please be sure to mark June 4-6 on your calendar if you have not already done so.

The Volunteer Committee is still looking for volunteers. Please call Carol Kunkel or Sandy Dees if you wish to sign up to volunteer at the show. You get $5.00 off the $20.00 cost of a 3 day pass if you volunteer.

Also check the website for class information. A few classes are full however, some do not have more than one or two quilters signed up. The Class Committee will be cancelling classes if they do not have enough participants signed up.

We have really neat show goodies for sale this year. The annual pin is a wonderful rendition of this year’s theme, “Quilts Tell a Story.” We will also offer a CD featuring photos of all of this year’s entries. In addition, we will be selling seat cushions which say “Put your Fat Quarters Here!” and little black pouches that say “Quilting is my Bag!” Get yours quickly, supplies are limited. If you see them and want one, don’t wait until the end of the show. They are likely to sell quickly.

New this year you can find a complete list of vendors, their contact information, booth numbers and a floor plan by visiting www.quiltersunlimited.org and clicking on Quilt Show making it easier than ever to visit your favorites and plan your shopping ahead of time. The floor plan has changed, so if you want to get to a favorite vendor, check out the floor plan here. We are down to reviewing the small details and getting them out to the vendors. We have 85 vendors this year, including a 5th Corporate Sponsor. I truly hope your favorite has returned and that our new vendors make your “favorites” list.

To my wonderful Quilt Show Vendor Committee, you have certainly earned a great big THANK YOU and the appreciation ahead of time for your help at the show.

Happy Quilting, Carol

From the Quilt Collector

Are your quilts Quilt Show ready?

They are Quilt Show ready if:

  • They are completely finished
  • They have a hanging sleeve which is 4 inches deep and the width of the quilt - If you need directions, go to http://www.quiltersunlimited.org and click on Quilt Show.
  • They are labeled with entrant's name/chapter/quilt's name/phone number sewn on the bottom right corner of back of quilt
  • Each quilt has a carrying sack with entrant's name/chapter/quilt name with secured closure. Note: Quilts cannot share a carrying sack.

Joan will be collecting quilts on May 18th and May 25th.

Thank You from Carol Kunkel

Mount Vernon Quilters,

I would like to send my heartfelt Thanks for so enthusiastically providing night’s stay at the hotel during set up of the Quilt Show. The chance to drop after a very long day, rather than driving home will be a luxury indeed!

Thank you so very much for your generosity! I greatly appreciate this support.

Carol

Potential Retreat/Shopping Trip

At the meeting on April 27, Ro Coller asked those present to sign up if interested in potential retreats and/or a shopping trip for next year. Next spring, open dates available for the Bird-in-Hand Retreat are (Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights): March 14, 15, and16th; March 21, 22 and 23rd or March 30, 31 and April 1. The AQS Quilt Show in Lancaster, PA is March 17-19, 2011.

Another option is a shopping trip to Bird-in-Hand with a one night stay (summer or fall).

We are also considering a weekend retreat (Friday and Saturday nights) at a hotel in Lexington Park (southern Maryland--about 1 1/2 hours away). This would be a sewing only retreat as there are no quilt shops nearby.

If you are interested in any of the options listed above, please e-mail Ro at russ.coller@verizon.net and let her know which dates and option you would prefer. No obligation, just gathering data. Thanks.

Charity Workshop

June 29, 2010 – Nine Patch Nonsense

Our next Charity Workshop will be Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at Hollin Hall Senior Center from 11:30 to 3:30. We will be making quilts for Quilts of Valor.

Donations of fabrics that are red and blue are needed. Small prints are acceptable and do not have to be themed patriotic, they just need to read red and blue.

These quilts will be scrappy and made using the Nine Patch Nonsense block with blue in the corners, red in the north, south, east, west positions and gold (provided by guild) in the center position. We will cut the squares 6 inches. The instructions for making this block can be found on our blog under BOM and scrolling down to the post for October 1, 2007. Mark your calendars now and plan to come join in the fun........

Your Charity Chairs,

Lynne Fishburn and Lynn Eccleston

June Luncheon –Mt Vernon Inn Restaurant, Tuesday, June 8, 2010, 12:30pm

Reservations are still open for the June Luncheon to be held on Tuesday, June 8, 2010, 12:30 PM at the Mount Vernon Inn Restaurant. The cost is $16.00 per person.

The menus include: a Petite Filet Mignon with Béarnaise Sauce, Caesar Salad, Fresh Berries in a Chocolate Cup, OR Chicken Cordon Bleu with Spinach Salad, and an Apricot Bread Pudding, OR Salmon with Raspberry Butter, Caesar Salad, and Chocolate Bread Pudding. All of the menus come with fresh vegetables and potatoes.

Since the luncheon follows the QU Quilt Show, quilts will be returned at the luncheon.

Pat Alfredson and Mary Mazzuchi will be taking reservations at all remaining meetings, programs and bees. If you need more information, please contact Pat or Mary.

Meet your New Officers for 2010-11

  • President: Lynne Fishburn
I first started quilting back in 1990 when I signed up for a Block-of-the-Month at a near by quilt shop. I then learned I needed more than a sewing machine and fabric to be a successful modern quilter and I purchased a rotary cutter, mat and a 6 x 24 ruler. I have since acquired many more tools, gadgets, books, sewing machines, and my most recent favorite toy/tool, my longarm. I moved to the City of Alexandria in July 2007 and joined Mt. Vernon QU that September.

  • Co-Vice President: Lynn Eccleston
I took my first quilting class at an adult education class in Allen Park, Michigan with a friend in 1976. My mother always loved quilts and she and I made quilts for all the beds in her home. She insisted absolutely on "hand made", so all those quilts (all five of them) are hand pieced and hand quilted. My mother died four years ago, and the quilts we made together are now mine and I think of the times that we worked on them together with immense fondness. My passion for quilting really intensified in 1993 when I started attending the Vermont Quilt Festival. Through Dixie I learned a lot about antique quilts and have been fortunate to have built up a modest collection of my own. Three years ago I simply retired altogether. I'm now able to set aside two or three hours a day to simply work on my quilting projects. That's what retirement should be all about!
  • Co-Vice President: Gigi Corbin

I have been doing needlework most of my life. In Germany, where I was born and raised, needlework was a required subject beginning in the second grade. In 2004, when I was purchasing fabrics for a baby quilt for my goddaughter’s first child, a salesclerk recommended that I attend QU’s Annual Quilt Show. I was so WOWED, that I signed up for my first quilting class. After my retirement in 2007, I joined Mt. Vernon QU and quilting quickly became my No. 1 hobby. I also enjoy gardening, cooking, reading and I do many of my own home repairs.

  • Secretary: Angie Miller

I made my very first quilt in 2000. It was a self-taught experience with only a few magazines and Cynthia Martin’s Machine Quilting Primer to guide me through the process. I had sewn for years, but quilting was a new experience…one I felt drawn toward. After taking a break from the working world in 2007, I joined MVQU to help me get a few unfinished projects done. Since that time I have finished a few of those UFOs and started a whole lot more! Through MVQU I met longarm quilter, Aby Dolinger. She inspired me to become one myself. I now have an APQS Longarm Machine, with a growing quilting business. My husband, Jack, fully supports my quilting efforts. We have been married four years now, and between us we have five adult children. I thoroughly enjoy quilting and hope to do so for many years to come.

  • Treasurer: Dotty Eisenhour

I have been elected treasurer for the second time. It is a job I enjoy and I’m looking forward to serving again. I have been with MVQU for 5 years and have been quilting for about 20. I live in Old Town and am the proud mother of 3 children and grandmother of 5! Quilting keeps me sane in this busy world!!

  • Nominating Committee: Ann Poulin
I started my quilting "career" as a needleworker when I was a little girl. I find working with my hands very relaxing and I like the reward of starting and finishing something. Not that I finish very much; so I guess I should say that I enjoy "starting." I met now-fellow QU member, Tammy Mannarino, when our oldest boys were in Kindergarten together 10 years ago. I kept saying I wanted to learn to quilt and she was a very willing teacher. It took years to "start" but then there was 9/11. Tammy pulled in a few of us gals to make "friendship star" blocks for 9/11 quilts in the community. It was my first ever block. Like all the others after it, better viewed from a distance, I fell in love with "starting" and all the amazing women/quilters I've met since then.

Note: The officers are seeking volunteers for the following positions:

  • Quilt Show Committee (Our job at next year’s show is programs and cards)
  • Quilt In, March 2011
  • New Member Kits
  • Community Outreach (i.e. Hanging quilts in public locations)
  • June Luncheon
  • Community Service Chair (i.e. charity)

Treasurers’ report: Dotty Eisenhour reported the balance. The chapter is in good financial shape. Membership registration for 2010-2011 begins in May. Agnes will put an application on the blog. Please fill it out and return it as soon as possible so the membership directory can be published quickly. Dotty received a thank you note from the Carpenter’s Shelter for our donations.

Vice President: Ellen Patton announced the Didi Salvatierre lecture and workshop on May 25th and 26th. Ellen is accepting registrations for the workshop today.

Ro also has questionnaires concerning the retreat: do people want a shopping trip with an overnight stay in Bird in Hand, PA; a retreat closer to home (Lexington Park MD) for sewing only (no shopping); or a weekend retreat. Please sign up for your preference so a decision can be made.

Sunshine: Cards have been sent as needed. Barbara Edler has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Agnes will send an email to the membership with Barbara’s address so we can send individual cards.

Fund Raiser: Barbara Tucker requests finished items only (no white elephants) for the Fund Raiser on November 9, 2011. Susan McDonnell will store the items for us.

We will make Quilts of Valor using split nine patch blocks. Gold fabric will be provided and donations of red and blue fabrics (solids or reads as solid) will be accepted. These should be 6 inch squares.

2010 Quilt Show Rep: Mt Vernon still needs to have more volunteers sign up to help at the show. The tickets will be $10 per day or $20 for 3 days. Volunteers will get $5 off the 3 day price. Carol Kunkel asked that the chapter consider paying for one night in a hotel for her since she has to be out there for 4 days. A motion was made and approved by the membership. We still need a volunteer to be our representative to the big quilt show committee. Our job will be Programs and Cards. The QU products for sale at this year’s show are: seat cushions, bags, pins and a CD. There is a need for 18 to 28-year-old volunteers for set up. They will be required to sign in and out and wear wrist bands. There are 558 quilts in this year’s show with 85 vendors and 5 corporate sponsors. There will be no coupons for discounted admission. Classes are closing so visit the big QU website if you want to sign up. There will also be a map on the website so you can find your favorite vendors. The Boutique will be by the front door. An ad for the show will be emailed to members to forward to family and friends. Big QU is going to do a survey of members to determine whether the show and quilt-ins will continue or not.

Joan Bingman with her Mariners Compass

Bert created "Chickens just like to have fun" for the QU Boutique

Bert plans to donate "Hope" to the American Cancer Society.

Libby Dudley made this table runner using decorative fabric tape as a test. The tape is crispy but seems to work.

This Shabby Chic 9-Patch Used 9-patches found at the Stone House-Cabin Branch Show 2010 in Manassas. Libby said it came out cockeyed but it was fun.

Libby created "a Virginia 9-Patch" because she wanted to do a 9-Patch and use cheery summer colors.

Libby's "Chinese Coins in Blue" charity quilt used pieces donated by Kay Brill and Joan Peake which they won at the March QU Quilt-In.

California State Capital Floor Quilt by Ellen Patten. This quilt was designed by Ellen with help drafting from Sharyn Craig, after seeing the floor at the California state capital building several years ago, It took a couple of years for her husband to agree to let her use other colors but she still wanted to have it look like floor tiles.

Ellen also made this Red, White, and Blue quilt which she made during the snowstorm from a free pattern she found online.

Carolyn Paden created this quilt from reproduction fabrics from Glory Bound and Bonnie Blue Quilts. She got the pattern from Wednesday Night Quilt Classes held at the library a couple of years ago.

Carolyn made the Blue and White quilt using the "Yikes" pattern from Progressive Quilt Class.

Barbara Zygiel hand pieced and hand quilted her "Christmas Stars" quilt.

Kathleen Shaw prepared her "Lots of Bows" quilt for her granddaughter Erin's Confirmation.

Pat Alfredson made this tea bag holder so she could take special teas with her. She will be making them for the QU Boutique.

Pat also created "Little Big Star".

One of Pat's Charity Quilts.

Another of Pat's Charity Quilts.

Ro Collier created this Fractured 9-patch with a dragon back. She thinks a young gentleman will enjoy it.

Ro was busy at the retreat as you can tell. She made this alphabet baby quilt from cheater cloth.

She finished this Round Robin quilt which featured the Arbor Day block she made for a Holiday block challenge.

Ro completed this blue and pink table runner.

And this pink and blue baby quilt with cats (Now she just needs to find parents who are using a pink and blue color scheme!)

Ro made this apple table topper,

And this bow tie top,

and this Soldier quilt.

Lynn Eccleston prepared this baby quilt with a turtle applique.

Lynn also created "Hidden Wells" which she lovingly alludes to as her "Good and Plenty" quilt.

Gigi Gorbin made "In the Jungle" from fabrics donated by Lynn Miller.

This is Gigi's Chinese Coins made from blocks from the QU Winter Quilt-In.

Marianne Urban made the "Big Honking Wolf Head Quilt" (above) and wall hanging (below) for her Sister's birthday. Hers sister admired the samples while she patiently waited for her in two Arizona quilt shops. Marianne says "She earned them!"

Agnes Purcell created these two quilts for Quilts of Valor from fabrics donated to MVQU. The one on the right should be familiar to those who participated in the first charity workshop. (Note the purple mushroom triangles that we all loved!)
