Show and Tell -- May 2012

Jim Melton presented his finished Civil War 150 Year Commemoration Quilt .  It shows rows of bricks with civil war recreated fabric set in rows of white-separating the bricks.  It was quilted by Angie Miller.

Here is "Ann's Purple Passion", a purple kimono quilt by Ann Marlin.  The quilt is made from a pattern called "Kimono Quilt" by Linda Paladino.

Pat Bolton made this "Signature Quilt." It was designed for the "end of the year" President's Quilt for Air Force Officer's Wives Club(AFOWC).
Pat Bolton shows her "Stars and Stripes Forever".  It comes from a McCall's Quilting Pattern and it is Quilt of Valor donation.

Here Pat presents another  "Quilt of Valor-- Star in a Square."  It is  a free pattern entitled Fast No Match Star from Urban Elements.  Pat's quilting group from AFOWC made this quilt to donate it to the Quilt of Valor Organization.
Lastly, Pat "1930's Square" is from Quilter's Cache.  She tells us that it was a fun quilt to use up her 30's stash.
Carol Conahan presents "French Roses" designed by Heather French.  It is a raw edge applique.
Lynne Fishburn presents "Thriend to Thriend" which she designed.
Lynne also showed "Star Delight" It is a block from Jane Hardy Millers .
The top was pieced by Patricia Ritter and quilted by Lynne with Double Bubble design by Patricia Ritter.

This was a  "Mystery Quilt".  Sierra Smith and her friend cut too much fabric for this mystery project since they did not know what it would look like.  They each made 5 quilts.

Here is "Stephen's Graduation Quilt".  Sierra wanted to use up overflowing drawer of homespun.  She almost succeeded.  This will be her nephew's graduation quilt in 3 years.

This is "Scrappy Happy."  Sierra liked the block, but didn't bother with the directions so she got tired of making blocks and just put them together for a baby quilt.

Another "Here We Go Round in Circles" from the Circle of Nine Workshop.  Sierra had made extra blocks for the workshop and put them together at the recent retreat.

Sierra shows "Flora Symphony" which used bags of blocks from her stash.

Sierra presents "Flower Drum Song." from a small group of Japanese fabric in auction bag.  The center were blocks already made and the rest was packaged with it.

Sierra Smith attended the Karen Stone workshop and here presents her "Here We Go Round in Circles."  It was made from auction fabric mostly state flowers and she added some blocks she had stashed.

Barbara Dove designed this "Welcome Wreath" and also "Birds of a Different Feather."

Carol Kunkel presents "Snow Days" (front and back) from the Snow Man Collection.  It was machine embroidered.
Ro showed us what she did at retreat: a raw edge quilt, some blunting blankets and pillowcases.

Here is Pat Alfredson's  Augusta Cole pattern "Snappy Squares Batik"

Pat's Autumn Leaves started with blocks from the 5" square exchange whcih  were used in the quilt squares and for the applique.

"Ducks in the Rain" by Pat Alfredson.  This is a panel that was quilted at the retreat for the Boutique.

Ruth Morgan's "Sherbet"  was a top she assembled at the retreat.
This was a "Retreat Special"

Andrea made "Cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs" an original design.  It was made from brown squares in a Tootsie Roll lunch box that she won at our auction.
This quilt goes to a friend of her son's from college who was cervical cancer and loves cocoa puffs.

And this is Andrea Gribble the famous or infamous "The Dog Quilt" pattern from Janet Rimes "It's Raining Cats and Dogs".  Everyone in the world worked on this!!.  It's been 5 years in the making.  Everyone thought this was ugly.  It still needs borders.  This was done at a friend's request and she picked the fabrics.  Pale yellow to match her lab and wedge wood blue -- very depressing combination.

This blue and white Yukata Jacket with a slash of red and and beaded origami squares is an original design by Andrea.

Co-Presidents' Message

One of Mike's quilts
We really had a special treat last month with our program and workshop by Mike Ellingsen. Carol had been promising something special and we were not disappointed! We all enjoyed his colorful quilts and witty presentation. His answer to “How many hours a day do you spend quilting?” was met with great amusement when he answered 10 to 12! We all would have many fewer UFO’s and many more completed quilts, if we too had a wife/quilting assistant/helper! Just think, if we didn’t have to cook, clean, shop, and do laundry, we could just quilt all day! We'd LOVE it!

Now that summer is here, perhaps our schedules will slow down and we will have more time for quilting. Right! We look forward to seeing many of our own completed quilts at our “show and tell” in September. However, if you want to bring anything, that cannot wait for September to our summer Ice Cream Social, we will have “show and tell” time then too. Hope to see you then. Ruth and Ro

A Big Thank YOU
I extend a BIG THANK YOU to the MVQU members who have graciously stepped forward to serve as officers and to chair the committees for 2012-2013 (see detailed list in this newsletter).  I look forward to working with each of you to make it a great quilting year at MV.  Ruth

Another BIG Thank YOU, Thank YOU, Thank YOU
As all of us know, the quilt show was a huge success. 700 quilts, 70 vendors and a record number of visitors. Mt. Vernon’s contribution was managing the boutique.
A great big thank you goes to Pat Alfredson for being the QU Boutique Chairman. She has logged over a hundred volunteer hours in preparation for the three day show. Total figures are not in as of press time, but Mt. Vernon would not have raised any money without the leadership of Joyce Keating and Carol Conahan, our Chapter Coordinators. Jill Crispino made our story boards which hung on the end panels and showcased our activities. Ro Coller made the plastic holders for the flyers and Libby Dudley arranged to have the flyers printed. What is a quilt show without quilts? Thank you to our quilt collectors, Lynne Fishburn and Angie Miller. They were there every step of the way to help us get our quilts finished and registered on time! A great big thank you goes to each of the Mt. Vernon members who signed up to volunteer, to help make items for the boutique, to store, set up and take down and work the booth. Mt. Vernon’s obligation was made much easier because so many stepped forward to help when help was needed. Thank you.

2011-2012 Vice President's Message
MVQU Members, Thank you again for allowing me the honor of serving as your Vice President/Programs for the 2011-2012 season.  From first program to last, each has seemingly been a huge success.  The feedback received for all of the programs has been overwhelmingly positive. I started the year being assured that I could not fill the workshops. I made it my goal to do so, and believe that I accomplished that goal. Thank you to everyone who signed up for the workshops. It is because of you and your support of MVQU that these workshops filled.  I want to wish all the best to the incoming VPs, Libby Dudley and Barbara Jones.  I hope that you have as much fun as I did serving you, and I encourage the membership to continue to sign up for the workshops, so that we may continue to bring the quality programs that MVQU is known for bringing to our quilt community.

November 13, 2012 Auction
Dear Mt. Vernon Quilters –

It’s that time to start thinking about donations for our upcoming Auction on November 13, 2011. I know that date seems far away now, but it does take awhile to make all the magic happen, and if you are like me, and cleaning out closets, basements and your garage now, this is a great time to think about what you can donate to Mt. Vernon.

We are looking for any finished quilts or quilted items you would care to donate. We are also looking for tops, or even blocks that we can pass on to a quilter who can use them to make a lovely finished product – so many of our members LOVE getting those blocks and seeing what they can do with them.

We of course could use donations of fabrics – we’ve got those amazing pink work boxes from Sears, and we’re looking for some fat quarters and half yard pieces of batiks for those boxes in bright colors. We’re always looking for pretty fabrics to put into baskets for the auction. We’re also looking for fabric for our baskets and other boxes as well. I’ll be making more specific requests for these as we go along this summer

We also need cutting tools - rotary cutters (all sizes), blades, scissors (big and small) – cutting mats, rulers, thimbles, threads, needles, pincushions, tape measures, pins, etc. – in short, any sewing equipment or gadget you’d need or want to have in your quilting endeavors. These are also for our baskets and boxes.

As I mentioned at our meeting the other day, we really could use help in putting together baskets – last year the bulk of the work fell on Ro and Pat Alfredson. We would so appreciate it if members could step forward and take over responsibilities of putting together even one basket. (We’re not asking that you do ALL of the baskets, we’re just asking that you and maybe your friends do one or two). We have the underpinnings – the example I gave the other day was the beginnings of an Hawaii basket (a quilting novel set in Hawaii, a Hawaiian inspired pattern) all it needs is some Hawaiian fabric and a few more items and “aloha” – what a cute basket it will be. We also have some cat fabric someone donated – someone could take that and make a cute basket for a cat lover out of that. We’re already getting a “chocolate lover’s basket” and a “coffee lover’s basket” – see! you can pick whatever you want, and just go with it! If you need some inspiration we have many patterns and books as “jumping off” points for anyone willing to help us out and put together baskets for us, and we can supply some donated items, including baskets, boxes, etc. or you can come up with your own ideas. Why not get together with your girlfriends and make an event out of trying to put together the most spectacular basket? Before the auction, the “best” basket will be judged by the Mt. Vernon QU board, and a $25 gift certificate to the Variety Store will be awarded to the winner(s).

Ro has graciously agreed to run the food court again this year. I’d like to plead with you “canners” that the jams, jellies and preserves went like hotcakes last year (we sold out!) and it’s beginning to be that season where it’s time to fire up the stove and start making those things. If you need any canning jars, please let me know. We’ve had some donated to us. Those of you who got the jars, and didn’t throw them away, we’d love to have them (please recycle the canning jars – they’re expensive, but so worth it!!) – a note of caution, canning jars are very specifically created for canning, and old empty jars (like peanut butter, or mayo) will not work – they explode in the water bath. Canning jars will say “Ball” or “Mason” on the side. We’d love to have them, if you don’t need them any more. We’ll take any size. More on the food court later.

Here is one of our early donations
We’ll start posting pictures of some of our donated items on the web, so that you’ll see what you’ve got to look forward to at our upcoming auction. We hope to see you there!!!

Auction Chair

DO YOU HAVE SOMETHING TO DONATE TO ANN
Ann Marlin has volunteered to be our Greeter and Door Prize Coordinator for next year. We all love getting those prizes, don’t we? If you run across anything you think would make a good prize and you would like to donate it, Ann will be accepting them for next year’s “door prize kitty” throughout the summer. You can contact her or bring your items to one of our Tuesday afternoon Bees. Many thanks.

Congratulations GO to our very own Barbara Zygiel
Barbara won not one but two ribbons at the Woodlawn Needlework Show.  She won third place for her miniature Christmas Baskets quilt, and second place for her smocked doll dress.  Way to go, Barbara.

BIG QU's 40th ANNIVERSARY

2013 40th Anniversary Quilt Show Details
It is hard to imagine, this year’s Quilt Show is over and planning has already started for next year, 2013, our 40th Anniversary Show. The two guild-wide challenges have been announced: “Red and White” and “All About Forty”. Next year’s teachers have already been announced as well. Jan Krentz will be the keynote teacher and lecturer at our annual meeting. Three other teachers have agreed to teach classes during the show. They are Brenda Henning, Rita Verroca, and Melody Crust. More details to come.

The Virginia Quilt Museum will exhibit quilts made and collected by Hazel
Carter of Vienna, VA from May 22 to August 18, 2012. This is the first exhibit to feature her quilts even though her name is familiar to quilters across the country.
She is recognized as a quilt historian and appraiser, a founding member and
organizer of Quilters Unlimited of Northern Virginia, a group of more than 1,000 quilters. Hazel laid the ground-work for retreats, conferences, shows, museums
and preservation of quilts before the 1970's resurgence of quilting as a craft, hobby and art. She produced the Continental Quilting Congress, an early national gathering of quilters, historians and instructors, which held ten national seminars. She spearheaded the Quilters Hall of Fame located in Marian, Indiana, wrote numerous magazine articles and the introduction to Quilts of Virginia 1607-1899 published by the Virginia Consortium of Quilters.
This exhibit will feature five antique quilts, the oldest being circa 1835, and twelve miniature quilts from Hazel’s collection as well as twenty nine quilts and wall hangings made by Hazel. They are all hand quilted with one exception. For all of Hazel Carter’s research, writing and organizing, her main interest has always been simply quilting, being with other quilters, exchanging ideas and techniques. She started her first quilt in 1942 under the influence of her mother and grandmother in Iowa. She remains a quilter who advises museums, appraises and records significant quilts and supports the preservation of all kinds of quilting from traditional to embellished fiber art work.
This exhibit is sponsored in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, Virginia Commission for the Arts, Old Dominion Applique Society and Carolyn Lynch. The Museum is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm at 301 South Main Street, Harrisonburg, VA. Parking in the municipal lot behind the museum is free. Phone 540-433-3818 for more information.
