President's Message
We will finish up our year with the 28th Annual Quilters Unlimited Quilt Show. June 2 is set-up day with a lecture by Eleanor Burns that evening at NOVA Annandale Campus. Lecture begins at 7 pm and is preceded by a book signing at 6pm. If you haven’t bought a ticket for the lecture you can purchase a ticket at the door. The show is Friday, 10 – 6, Saturday 10 – 5 and Sunday 11 – 4. You can get all the information you need about the show on the QU website, www.quiltersunlimited.org.
Catherine Snyder has planned our yearend luncheon. It is now too late to reserve your place. Our luncheon will be held at Indigo Landing on June 7th. Mark your calendar, as this is not our normal meeting day. You will be able to pick up your quilts that were displayed at the show at the luncheon.
On June 14th we will have our Yard and Bake Sale at Hollin Hall. Set-up begins at 11 and the sale at Noon. There are more details later in the newsletter.
It is membership renewal time. If you are a life member and no longer pay dues you must still complete a membership form every year to maintain your membership in Mt. Vernon QU and to be listed in the QU directory.
In the summer we continue meeting informally every week upstairs in room 216. These informal meetings are a great way to stay connected to your quilting friends over the summer as well as make new friends. If you need your quilt basted you’re sure to find a helping hand or two at the Tuesday bees.
It is never too early to start thinking about next year’s Auction. Our Fall Auction is our main fundraising activity, which pays for programs. Andrea Gribble has graciously offered to chair the Fall 2011 Auction and will be happy to answer your questions and hear your ideas.
It has been an honor to be your president this past year. I have enjoyed getting to know many of you better and have made new friends too. I have met with our incoming Presidents, Suzanne Shaw and Ruth Morgan. They are both excited about next year. I know this excitement will spill over on to all of us.
See you at the quilt show.
Lynne

Looking Ahead
- Every Tuesday in July and August — Bee, 12:30 pm, Room 216, Hollin Hall Senior Center
This year we are going to try something new to add to our treasury. We are going to have a Yard and Bake Sale at Hollin Hall. On Tuesday, June 14th, we will setup tables at Hollin Hall in Room 112 (the big room where we hold our business and program meetings). Bring any items you don’t want any longer, pre-priced and place on a table. All profits will go to Mt. Vernon QU. Any items that do not sell will need to be removed by the person who brought them to the Yard Sale. We will hold the yard sale from Noon till 3 pm. Set-up begins at 11 am.
You may be asking:
- “What can I bring to the Yard Sale?” Any and everything can be put up for sale. Items do not have to be quilt or sewing related.
- “How can I help?” Come early and help setup. Bring stuff to the yard sale. Invite your friends and neighbors to come to the Yard Sale.
- The bake sale will run the same as it does for our Fall Auction. Items need to be individually wrapped with an ingredient list attached. Please price your bake sale items as well.
- For the ease of our Treasurer, please price your items in increments of not less than $.25.
So as you put away winter and get ready for summer, think of MVQU. Those items you no longer want can be sold to add income to our resources for future programs and workshops.
Note: A flier is available here – please copy and post wherever you can
Challenge from Virginia Quilt Museum
You have the skill in your hands to raise funds for the Virginia Quilt Museum!Create a small Christmas quilt that is no larger than 6 inches and send it to the Virginia Quilt Museum by July 31, 2011. Visitors to the Museum will vote on their favorite small quilt ornaments and three quilters will win prizes. The first prize is a $25 gift certificate, the second a $15 certificate and the third a $10 certificate. The certificates can be redeemed in the museum shop.
All of the handmade Christmas ornaments will be sold in the museum shop to support museum operations and the preservation of quilts.
A new quilter or not experienced in miniatures? Make some ornaments anyway.....that’s called folk art and lots of people love it on their tree.
Send ornaments, your name and address to Virginia Quilt Museum, 301 S. Main Street, Harrisonburg, Virginia 22801.
