Presidents’ Message

I love the fall with its cool crisp air, perfect for long walks in the park. Mother Nature’s “Fall Foliage Spectacular” is a daily source of joy, awe and inspiration. If you find yourself in a creative stall, taking advantage of Mt. Vernon’s programs, workshops and this year’s version of a Block of the Month (BOM), “Have You Tried This?” will help you recharge your creative batteries.

In November, we have a full calendar of events. Our Annual Fund Raiser will be held on November 9th. Our business meeting will be later in the month on November 23rd. With the business meeting scheduled for later in the month you will have more time to complete your BOM. Bring your “Ahhhh, You Shouldn’t Have Gift Blocks” to show or share. Our next Charity Workshop is scheduled for November 30th. We will be making student backpacks for the Student Nurses at NOVA to pack with goodies for patients at Children’s Hospital. Details can be found below. If you have ideas for charity projects please pass them on to Joan Bingman. And don’t forget, the first and third Tuesdays are our Bee days, where we gather informally and friendships are strengthened.

The registration form for the Eleanor Burns lecture on June 2, 2011 is now available on the QU website. Go to the QU Show page, click on Eleanor Burns and you will be able to print the form to complete and return by mail to the address indicated on the form. We will have forms available at the meetings for members who do not use the internet. Members who register before December 31, 2010 will receive a discount.

Don’t be surprised if you see Mt. Vernon in the news. Our thanks go to Libby Dudley, who is diligently sending press releases to the local newspapers announcing our events and guest speakers.

Don’t forget to invite your friends and neighbors to our Annual Fund Raiser.

See you there …... Lynne Fishburn

Cardinal Quilters is pleased to invite you to a lecture by art quilter, Cindy Grisdela, on Friday, November 12th, 10:00 am at Trinity United Methodist Church, 2911 Cameron Mills Road, Alexandria, VA 22302 On Cindy's website, www.cindygrisdela.com, she states: “I’m intrigued by color and the way colors interact with one another. Color is such an exciting part of life--the red of a perfectly ripe strawberry, the deep blue of a summer sky, the russets and golds of fall leaves--all enhance our experience of the world. I like to use fabric the way a painter might use paint to create a mood, develop a contrast, or explore an idea.”

Some of Cindy’s work can be seen at the Potomac Fiber Arts Gallery at the Torpedo Factory in Old Town Alexandria or The Artisans shop on Chain Bridge Road in McLean.
