Presidents’ Messages
Greetings Quilters!
I am honored and excited to serve as MVQU Co-President. It is my goal
to work hard and do my very best to make 2013-2014 a productive, fun and
meaningful year. Looking ahead, we have many, many important tasks to
accomplish. However, I proceed with confidence and joy, as Mt. Vernon members
overflow with so much creative talent—it takes my breath away, ambition,
generosity and goodwill. I look forward to working with all of you.
Andrea and I will divide up many of our duties and work as a team on
others. Andrea will run our chapter meetings, while I focus on QU business,
including assisting in the planning of the 41st Annual QU Quilt Show. This
year, we looked back at forty years of QU history and tradition. As we move
into our forty-first year, we will look forward and continue to evolve. Mt.
Vernon will be a part of this evolution and growth. Our progressive journey
starts with a new MVQU pin! I am designing two different options. Please make
sure to attend the business meeting on September 10, 2013, so you may
participate in the process by voting for the pin of your choice.
Until then, enjoy your summer. The hot and humid Washingtonian days
provide the perfect opportunity to stay in and quilt, quilt, quilt. Perhaps you
will start something new or finish up a couple UFOs, obtaining your PhD in
quilting. Or…maybe just a Master's.
Happy Quilting,
T
Dear
Members – I wanted to join T in welcoming you all to this upcoming year at Mt. Vernon.
We have a lot of things going on for this upcoming year, and we both
think it’s going to be a very eventful and exciting year!
I
do have a schedule roughed out for next year, but the dates and some of the
events are tentative. Please
understand that we are working some things out, and there are some events that
are not on the calendar yet, or that are being moved around, or have not been
finalized. So please understand if you
think there is something missing, or something is on there that doesn’t
materialize, this is all very TENTATIVE!!!

Our bus trip to the Pennsylvania
Quilters Extravaganza in Philadelphia area in Pennsylvania is scheduled for
Thursday, September 19, 2013. Our price
is the same as last year - $60 per person.
Attached to this e-blast is a copy of the registration form, and Mt.
Vernon members will have a little bit of a head start to register before it
goes out to all QU members and members of the public. Please take advantage of this great opportunity
– this is such a great show, and such a fun trip!!!
With
our vote to remain in QU, the result is that by doing so we have agreed to
continue to participate in their events, such as the Quilt Show, but this also
means we owe them a measure of responsibility, such as doing jobs that are assigned
to us, and especially caring for our quilts if we want to have them in the
Quilt Show. Currently, we do not have a
Quilt Show Representative. T is
performing that job for now, but our officers have plenty of responsibilities
without taking on the additional tasks of jobs.
Having just spent days filling out forms so that we may continue to have
our space at the Senior Center, I have a new appreciation for how much work
this job entails, and there are two of us doing it! I don’t know how Ruth did it
by herself! Our job related to the Quilt
Show is fairly simple this year, and if someone would volunteer, or at least
agree to help T out, this would make the job so much simpler (many hands make
light work!!!) I and others in our
chapter have worked for the Quilt Show for many years, and I am sure we can be
a source for mentoring this job.
The
next position we must fill is Quilt Collector, and we simply must have the
position filled, or we cannot put quilts in the Quilt Show. Mt. Vernon quilters are so immensely talented
it would be unthinkable if we did not represent in this show! Please, please consider stepping forward and
representing our chapter! Several
members in our chapter have done this job in the past, and should be available
to mentor whoever will volunteer for this post.
Please consider doing this position – it’s a great way to meet your
fellow quilters in your chapter (if you don’t know them already), and a
wonderful way to see their work (and
YOUR work) up close!
Well,
I think that’s enough nagging for now!
We look forward to seeing you all in the fall. Get ready for T’s artwork for our new chapter
pin, Rickie is getting the auction put together and we’re saving a space on the
bus to Philadelphia just for you!

Message
from our Vice Presidents
Come join nationally known quilter and TV personality Georgia Bonesteel
presenting her workshop “Interlock Revisited ”; Wednesday September 25,
2013 9:30AM - 3:30PM
“Interlock, Revisited” is great for using
light/dark scraps or for working in a distinct color contrast. This
is a piecing, re-piecing project geared for beginner to intermediate
quilters. The cost of the workshop is $50. To sign up please contact
either Mary Mazzuchi, or Pat Alfredson. We will be opening up registration to
quilters outside Mt Vernon after the 4th of July.
Thanks,
Mary
THE AUCTION IS COMING! THE AUCTION IS
COMING! THE AUCTION IS COMING!
Please mark October 29, 2013 as the special date
for our annual MVQU fabulous auction.
Yes, we are doing it again! This year's
auction promises to be even better (if that were only possible) than our 2012
auction. Last year's auction was a truly incredible event thanks to everyone's
generosity and Andrea's tireless work. I’m
counting on all of you to help make this year's event even more successful.
I will start collecting all your special
donations at the Ice Cream Social in July. Mary Downey
has graciously volunteered to store all our treasures. Kathy Marciano
has agreed to help me for this event.
Ro Coller, again, will help with our food
and goodies table. I know I will need many more of you to not only make
this year's auction a success, but also have lots of fun working together. I
really am a "fun" person!!!!!!!! Please contact
me with all your wonderful ideas.

Quilting PhD Registration Has Begun
So far we have 7 brave PhD Candidates in our program.
Some of them have
taken the brave step of wading through their
sewing rooms to document ALL of the unfinished projects lurking there! It may be
tough to admit how many you have (it's a
little like stepping on the bathroom scale), but it's also good to know where you are starting from.
Won't it feel good to have 6 projects
done by February?
To participate in the program all you have to do is list 6 of
your projects
on the PhD Registration form (which can be found under Challenges on the side bar) and provide a copy to Tammy
Mannarino. "The Dean of Quilting".
You may send your lists to her via e-mail or by snail mail.
The second page of the form is a continuation sheet,
if you want to go the extra step and
document all of your projects (yes, it's okay to make extra copies if you exceed 22 projects (you won't be the first!).
Use ‘Em Up Challenge Final Instructions
The theme of the last row is Stars.
You can use star blocks or star fabrics. Have fun! If you
have questions contact Pat Alfredson or Mary Mazzuchi. The big reveal is
planned for the September 2013 Business Meeting. It is not too late to
participate. So far we have instructed
you to make four strips incorporating strip 1 – with Squares, strip 2 – with
Triangles, strip 3 - with Snowballs, and strip 4 – with Applique.
We will reveal our finished tops at the September 2013
Business Meeting. Questions? Contact Pat Alfredson or Mary Mazzuchi
Summer Ice Cream Social
SAVE THE DATE! Our second annual ice cream social will
be held on Tuesday, July 23, 2013. We'll have our usual array of toppings
for the ice cream, homemade pound cake and brownies (and maybe cookies....).
Plan to come and enjoy an afternoon of gentle socializing with the group.
We will also be having a fat quarter exchange, so there will be some
quilt related stuff going on, too…. Ro Coller
Ice Cream Social Fat Quarter Exchange
I know we all have extra fat quarters that we bought on a whim and have never used…..and never will. We hope to have a huge fabulous assortment of fat quarters for you to choose format the Ice Cream Social. In order to participate in July…..you must donate at least one fat quarter before the swap begins. Questions? Contact Beth Smith.
Storybook Quilt Educational Project – Starts This Summer!
MVQU is planning an educational project, to start this summer,
called Storybook quilts. Children's books with a quilt integral to the
story and a real quilt to match the one in the book are central to the project.
When you decide to participate, you will choose the book that you like (we have
a list) and then create the quilt that is in the story. Participants will also have the opportunity to
join a 'bee' dedicated to the project. Eventually,
the books and quilts will be taken into our local schools to support reading
programs and to expose children to the craft of quilting. For more information on Storybook Quilt
projects, go to 'storybookquilts.org' Interested? Please contact Jill

"True Blue"
41st Annual QU Show Quilt Guild Challenge
May 30 - June 1, 2014
Blue can be palest sky blue, or deepest sapphire, or brilliant
azure. This year’s challenge is to
showcase your blue – either as a
monochromatic quilt (only blues allowed), or as blue plus one other color (for
this challenge, white counts as a color).
You can choose as many different shades, hues, and tints of blue as you
like.
Your quilt can be traditional, modern, or fabric art; you can use any
construction method, but it must have three layers, a noticeable quilting
design, and a finished edge. Quilts must
follow basic show requirements for size, sleeve, and label. No wearable’s for this challenge, so we can
hang all the challenge quilts together.
Quilts must be finished and photographed prior to the close of quilt
registration for the 2014 show. You may
enter as many quilts in the challenge as you like, as long as you do not go
over the allowed number of quilts per quilter.
