May 2009 Newsletter

President’s Message
Dear MVQU Members,
It is with great sadness that I share the news of the death of Beverly Dasch’s daughter, Catherine. Many of you knew Catherine through her visits at our guild meetings. Our sincere condolences go out to Bev and her family. For the time being, Elizabeth Eastmond, a long-distance member, has stepped in to help maintain our blog. You can still submit entries to the blog at our regular email address: www.mvqu.news@gmail.com. Please take the time to visit the blog to see recent updates at http/.mvquilters.blogspot.com. Thanks so much for your help during this time, Elizabeth.

This is a busy time for Guild business. We have a newly elected slate of officers to lead us into next year. Congratulations to our new Executive Board and thank you for volunteering to serve and lead the guild.
Bert Garino, President, Ellen Patton, Vice President, Dotty Edwards, Treasurer
Cathy Hanratty, Secretary, Libby Dudley, Nominating Chair

Membership renewal is underway now. Please complete a membership form (available for download on our blog, or in hardcopy at any bee or meeting from Kathy Edwards or Lynn Miller), and pay your dues before the end of May. We are also required to submit individual registration forms to the Hollin Hall Senior Center for every member who attends any guild meetings at the center. Forms are available in hard copy from Lynn Miller or the Senior Center Office and are due by the end of May. These forms must be completed each year, so even if you have completed one before (or even if you’ve never been required to complete one in past years), you should do so now. Senior Center funding is dependent on the number of people who routinely use the space. Please remember to sign in when you come for bees so that they get credit for those of us coming in those days as well. We submit our sign-in sheet on meeting days.

Our spring is full of fun and creativity with workshops and lectures, most recently from Cynthia England and an upcoming lecture from Freida Anderson. In a spirit of sharing our creativity, the guild will have another opportunity to donate quilts to the Carpenter’s Shelter. They will be collected by Lynn Miller through our last bee in May, for delivery to the shelter in early June. The shelter provides temporary housing and transitional assistance to families in need, and quilts of all sizes and styles are appropriate.

As a reminder, the Frosty Snowman and Tree blocks are due by the June luncheon. You may also turn them in at any meeting in May. Pieced blocks with no appliqué are also welcome.

Gail Franchi has sign-up sheets available for those interested in the September 17 bus trip to the Pennsylvania National Quilt Show. Cost for MVQU members is $25, which includes the cost of the seat on the bus, entry to the show, driver’s tip and refreshments of a light breakfast and bottled water.

Once again, we have a busy and exciting month in store. I look forward to seeing you and sharing our quilting creativity at upcoming bees, meetings, workshops and lectures.

Happy quilting,
Lynn Miller, MVQU Co-President

Spring QU Events Not to Be Missed

Lecture and Workshop “Autumn Glory” with Frieda Anderson
May 26th and 27th, 2009

Several Mt Vernon and Burke members are looking forward to fall and giving themselves a gift by attending the Autumn Glory workshop with Frieda Anderson, May 27, 2009. There are only a few spots left and they are being advertised now on QU Digest. So if you've been thinking about this one, don't miss this chance to attend the last workshop of the season. Or invite a friend along if you are signed up. Contact Angie Miller at a2miller@live.com for more details.

This is a no sewing machine required class. Raw–edge fusing makes this class fun and easy, and you’ll learn new techniques to make it fast. Students may select from one of two wall hangings: “Fall Glory” (flowers) or “Three Pumpkins.” The workshop fee is $40 and includes the pattern. Optional fabric kits are $30 and take the worry out of fabric selection.

Join us for a one hour lecture and PowerPoint presentation titled “Walks in the Woods with George” on Tuesday, May 26, 2009, 12:30 pm, Hollin Hall Senior Center, Room112. Frieda will share how her daily walks in the woods with her Jack Russell Terrier affects her quilting. Frieda will have many of her quilts on display as well as patterns and fabrics for sale.

Frieda’s quilts have won many awards. Her most recent wins, “Celebrate Spring,” Third Place, International Quilt Festival Chicago 2008, and “Whispering Pines,” Judges Choice International Quilt Festival, Houston 2007, reflect just how much those daily walks influence her creativity. Her quilts have also been featured in magazines such as Quilters Newsletter and Fons and Porter Love of Quilting and most recently in Quilting Arts Magazine. Learn more about Frieda Anderson and view her gallery of quilts by visiting her website at: http://www.friestyle.com/

MVQU, You're the Best!
Thank you for the signed quilt blocks! I am so touched by your thoughtfulness. It is wonderful to read the signatures and recall the faces that go with the names.

As I go forward with this next phase of my life, I will have a wonderful quilt to remind me of the great time I had being a guild member.

Regards,
Tammy (see the newsletter for her new address)

Claims for Reimbursement (Deadline May 12)
I am approaching the end of my term as your Treasurer. I ask that anyone who needs to be reimbursed for costs incurred on behalf of the MVQU submit their receipts attached to the Reimbursement Form. Thanks for everyone’s support this year. I hope that you will give our new Treasurer/Membership Chair, Dotty Eisenhour, your continued support as she takes over the books on July 1. --Kathy Edwards
