President’s Message

Greetings from Ruth

Why do we make quilts?  What inspires us to begin a quilt?  Is it wonderful fabric with fabulous color? Maybe it is a pattern or picture we have seen. Or do we cut and sew and quilt to mark a special occasion, to remember a special person or place?  Seasons turn, jobs change, babies are born and friends move away.  All of these events can be remembered and honored through our passion for quilting.  So, remember we are not making blankets, we are making memories.  We are making history.  We are making quilts.

Our annual auction is just days away.  Please come, bring a friend or two, have lunch, your participation will help make this fundraiser a success.  We have some beautiful quilts and tops plus some stunning baskets, the ever popular bake sale table, Ro’s delicious lunch in the café and items for purchase in our boutique.  There truly is something for everyone and I’m sure it will be a fun afternoon.

Also, please note: The November business meeting has been moved to Tuesday, November 27th.

See you then.

November Letter from Co-VPs Barbara and Libby

November – a month to give thanks for choices.  Mount Vernon quilters not only get opportunities to choose government officials, and dark or light for their turkey dinner, but can savor the cornucopia of choices at the chapter’s Quilt Auction, Boutique, White Elephant Table, and Bake Sale on Tuesday, November 13th. We can also be grateful that we have such creative members who come up with interesting items to offer and to show, using skills they have developed.  You can learn some new skills, or polish ones you have, at workshops coming up. Take advantage of the MV member early-bird special through November 27th for Eileen Doughty’s Cherry Blossom Time Postcard Quilt – a half-day mini-project to learn about fusing, inking, and thread painting on January 23. See the column at right for workshop descriptions and registration forms.  Besides Eileen’s workshop, you can also read descriptions and sign up for February’s Ro C. and Lynn E. Tessellation Techniques, March’s Bonesteel Interlock/Revisited, and May’s Combs Patchwork Illusions. Early-bird specials for those go through end December 31. All the workshops offer something different, so you can choose, or take them all!  Pictures of the projects are in the write-ups.  We don’t have regular programs on the 4th Tuesday of November and December, however, starting in January have your calendar marked for some real treats through May. This month, and every month, we can be thankful for all the friends we make among fellow quilters and for so many choices as we enjoy our craft – teachers, speakers, designs, fabrics, colors, threads, and more.  Happy Thanksgiving!

OUR AUCTION IS COMING!!!  OUR AUCTION IS COMING!!!!

Mark your calendars!! Mt. Vernon’s auction is just 2½ weeks away – on Tues. November 13, 2012.  Our auction starts promptly at 12:30 p.m. at the Hollin Hall Senior Center, 1500 Shenandoah Rd.,  Alexandria, VA  and will be over by 4 p.m.  We’ll have a Live Auction (full of beautiful vintage quilts and coverlets carefully cleaned and restored, an antique sewing machine and table complete with manual and all parts in working condition, and then quilts, wall hangings, lap quilts and jackets (made by our own members); we have a Silent Auction with AMAZING baskets – fabrics, foods, kits, blocks and SO MUCH MORE; we have a Chance Auction with many vintage items – several antique quilt tops, and several fabric baskets and more; a Buy It Now Boutique with darling items hand-made by our members – pin cushions, ornaments, jewelry, bracelets, placemats, table runners, baby afghans, and more; and a White Elephant table(s) to end all bargain shopping opportunities!!!  – fabrics, books, quilt-related items – for $5 you’ll be able to wheelbarrow out more things than you ever dreamed were possible to get at such cheap prices!!!  Bring a family member to help you “tote” out your goods.  In fact, bring ALL your family members to help you carry – you are going to need them…

Did I mention the Baked Goods table???  OHHHHHHH…. Well, first, we’ll be serving a yummy lunch courtesy of the lovely Ro Coller (we wouldn’t want your blood sugar to drop during the auction and interfere with your bidding decisions!)  We are having a scrumptious Southern chicken salad served over a bed of fresh field greens with a fluffy dinner roll and a side of cranberry-burgundy jello salad -  hand-made by Ro herself.  Mmmm-mmmm.  Lunch costs $5 (bottle of water included).  Offered for sale at the Baked Goods table will be jams, jellies, and preserves made by our members, as well as luscious baked goods – breads, cookies, cakes, and more.  And even more spectacular are the Sack Suppers (who wants to have to cook after a great day at the auction – well guess what? – you don’t have to…. buy a Sack Supper!!)  Some of our members will have prepared Sack Suppers – complete meals for 2, 4, or 6 people which you can take home, heat and serve.  Is that cool or what?

Please come to the auction!!!  Your chapter needs your support.  Whatever money our auction brings directly impacts the kind, number and quality of programs our chapter is able to have the following year.  Please bring your family, bring your friends.  Invite neighbors, ask the people who just moved in next door – it’s a great way to get to know someone!  The more people you bring, the more people who will potentially spend money.  Drag people in off the street.  We will swear to the police you didn’t force them at gunpoint!!!!

One more thing – we need a couple volunteers to help us out.  By putting out streets signs advertising our auction, we attract more than just our own people and just our immediate community to attend (last year several people came because of our signs).  We need one or two people to put out signs the week before the auction (the signs will be made up and ready to go) and then pick them up and bring them to our “bee” room for storage and re-use after the auction.  The signs are light weight, there are 10 of them and they can all be carried in one hand.  Putting them in the ground is easy – they are just like the political signs you see everywhere – easy in – easy out.  This is a great way to help out the chapter if you can’t work on the auction otherwise.  Please consider volunteering!  We desperately need your help.

Many thanks - Andrea Gribble, Auction Chair

Community Relations
For our December and January displays we are in need of small Christmas, Winter or Channukah quilts or wall hangings.  Please have your name on the items you display.  We display quilts for a month at a time in the Hollin Hall office and at the Sherwood Library.  If you have a quilt you are donating or have one you’d like to ‘show off’, please consider letting us display it for  a month.  We’d also like to find other places to display our passion, so if you know of a friendly venue, let me know and I’ll contact them.
Jill Crispino, Community Relations Chair

Farewell Blocks

We need your help!  We would like to send blocks to Joan Bingman but don’t have her new address.  If you are in touch with Joan please pass her contact information to Pat Alfredson.
Just a reminder Farewell Blocks is an ongoing project.  A collection of blocks are given to members who are leaving the area as a memento of their association with Mt. Vernon QU.  We would like to always have a supply of blocks on hand.   Instructions for a 9 1/2 inch nine patch friendship square block can be found on our Blog’s sidebar under MVQU Info.  The center star should be of a medium or dark colored solid or print. The border material should be either white or cream.  Please return your finished blocks to Pat Alfredson.

Are you ready for a Mystery?

Mary Mazzuchi and Pat Alfredson have planned a Mystery Quilt.  Part 2 of the mystery was distributed at the October Business meeting and is available on the Blog as well.  To find the instructions just look for Mystery Quilt on the sidebar.   It is not too late to join in on the fun.  Our plan is to show our quilts at the June Luncheon.

2013 QU Raffle Quilt Update

Celtic Celebration has been very well received, with only four Chapter Visits remaining.  If you haven’t already purchased tickets, get yours today.  Tickets are 6 for $5.00 or $1.00 apiece.  As of October 18, ticket sales total 1,645.

Vienna QU set high standards last year by selling 6,000 raffle tickets—a first for QU!   And hats off to Centreville QU, who this September sold all 250 tickets before we even visited—another first.  Mt. Vernon alone has sold 785 tickets thus far—way to go Mt. Vernon!  I am guessing that is a first for us too.  Lets’ continue this year of firsts.  If every member purchases just 6 tickets for $5, we will do just that.

The creation of this vibrant beauty truly was a Mt. Vernon QU member-wide effort.  It began under the guidance of Pat Alfredson and Rosemary Coller, who developed the layout design and block selection.  The 204 Bull’s Eye blocks that frame the center medallion were pieced by most of our members.  The center medallion and border, designed by Pat Alfredson, was hand appliqued at weekly bees.  Lynne Fishburn free motion quilted the top using pebble, meander, and tear drop and wrap designs.  See close up pictures of Celtic Celebration and more facts and trivia on our QU Fundraising link:  http://www.quiltersunlimited.org/ .

Heidi Johnson was introduced as a visitor.

The Minutes of the September stand as submitted.

Mary also asked for more of the friendship star blocks, which will be given to members moving away.  The blocks should be bright colored stars with white or off white backgrounds.  The pattern is on the blog.

Announcements
Regarding our meetings at Hollin Hall -  Please sign in with both HH and MVQU; pick up chairs and leave both rooms we meet in (Bee and Meetings) neater than we found them—chairs, tables and lights.  Many groups use Hollin Hall so be considerate of noises in the hall, etc. and keep the kitchen door closed to flies, etc.  Tornado drills – go to hallways, sit on floor, head on knees or shelter in downstairs restrooms.  Fire drills – leave building (done in A.M.)

T showed a star quilt she has made and was quilted by the women of St. John’s Lutheran Church.  Raffle tickets are available for purchase.

October 20 is the date for the Senior Center Auction.

Business meeting for November will be on the 27th.

Bill Rice, Vienna Chapter, showed three antique quilts that were donated for the Vienna auction.  He had received four quilts and the fourth – a yo yo quilt – has been donated for the MV auction.

Jim Melton spoke about the Del Ray Art Festival, the bus trip and about the possibility to selling some of our quilts at other venues.

Lynn Miller has a friend that has three antique feedsack quilts for sale for $500 each.  It was suggested that she put the announcement on the QU Digest.

Show and Tell:  Participating in show and tell were Andrea, Ann Marlin, Carolyn Paden, Patricia Bolton, Jill Crispino, Angie Miller, Hedy Vann and Jim Melton.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:45, followed by refreshments.

                                                            Respectfully submitted,

                                                            Dotty Eisenhour, Secretary

In October, T Carter showed us her “hang it dang it”.  One person can hang any size quilt, anywhere, perfectly, all by themselves in about a minute with only one picture hanger on the wall.  Here is a link to the company’s website: http://www.hangitdangit.com/

Show & Tell October 2012

Ann Marlin - Star Bright - pattern name Stella
Hopefully this will be given to Marie Osmond when I attend her show!!!

Andrea Gribble - Vintage Yo Yo donated to our November 13 Auction Fundraiser.
Quilt top was repaired by Bill Rice.

Sunflower - A chapter project for our November 13 Auction Fundraiser.
Layout, piecing, and quilting by Patricia Bolton.

Caroly Paden - Cherries on Green and Yellow 9 patch

Jill Crispino - Leslie's Runner - personalized placemats adapted to table runner.
Pattern by Krista  Fleckenstein

Jill Crispino - Wedding Quilt - Log Cabin With A Twist
Inspired by Barbara Kaempfer's pattern, adapted from photo of Bonnie Browning's quilt

Jill Crispino - Wedding Quilt Backup - Inspired by photo of Rebekah Lynch's quilt page 96 in Kaffe Fassett's Quilts In The Sun

Hedy Vann - "Sam's Photo Saphari - Story Book Quilt"
I look for storybook panels because only detail and original creativity is needed around each picture.  This gives me, a beginning quilter, good practice before moving on towards bigger and better things.  I search for matching fabrics to the pictures.

Hedy Vann - "Mother Goose - Storybook Quilt"

Hedy Vann - My Song Book - Storybook Quilt"

T Carter - Items donated to our November 13 Auction Fundraiser.
Vegetable fabric in canning jars!

T Carter - Pressing Matters - Pattern by Laura Wasilowski
I purchased this pattern and hand-dyed fabric from Laura Wasilowski when she presented at MVQU last year.
T Carter - Bufflow Camp - McKenna Ryan pattern & original design.
I redesigned this pattern to portray some of my favorite things from home (Minnesota)...a red-tailed hawk soaring in the summer sky, fires burning brightly inside Lakota/Dakota tipis, buffalo roaming through the prairie grass, tall pine trees towering the heavens, on Ojibwe birch bark canoe and walleye swimming in the sky blue waters of one of Minnesota's 10,000 lakes.

T Carter - Dakota 38 (four pictures above)
The year 2012 marks the 150th anniversary of the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862.
I created Dakota 38 in remembrance of the thirty-eight Dakota men who were hanged at 10:00 am on December 26, 1862 at Mankato, Minnesota - the largest mass hanging in the history of the United States.

This is a horrific chapter in our history, and one that is virtually unknown and/or hidden.  Through my fiber art, I hope to educate and encourage healing through forgiveness.  Both anger and guilt paralyze, however, forgiveness has the power to help us move forward.

"forgive everyone everything" - Vernell Wabasha, Dakota

Dakota 38 will be on exhibit during the fall/winter of 2012 at the Blue Earth County Historical Society, Mankato, Minnesota

Jim Melton - Luna Blocks - Blocks were bought in Panama, sewn together for a large bed quilt.

Bill Rice - Eight Pointed Star - Dating from the late 1800's from Vermont, maker unknown, hand pieced, hand quilted.  This quilt will be auctioned at Vienna QU's Auction Fundraiser, November 20, 7pm.

Bill Rice - Flying Geese - Early 1900's - maker unknown from Vermont, hand pieced and hand quilted.  This quilt will be auctioned at the Vienna QU's Auction Fundraiser, November 20, 7 pm.

Bill Rice - Log Cabin - from New Jersey, maker unknown, 1920's to 1940's.  This quilt will be auctioned at the Vienna QU's Auction Fundraiser, November 20, 7pm.  For more information contact Bill at 703.503.7378
