Show and Tell - September 14, 2010

What a show and tell! Your editor is sorry she missed seeing all these wonderful quilts in person.

Mary Stauss brought the "Scrap Flats and Pockets" quilt on the left and the whimsical "Baby Monkey" quilt on the right.

Ann Marlin brought this Batik Star Tabletopper / Wall hanging. Ann added that this quilted star is a pattern/kit that she picked up last year when they went to Colorado for their daughter's college graduation. She explained that it took her some time to decide how to quilt and bind it but the finished quilt is quite stunning.

This wonderful "Shadow Box" quilt was created by Pat Alfredson and quilted by Angie Miller. It will be available at our auction.

Barbara Zygiel made this Mother Goose panel which she hand quilted. Barbara also created this acorn table runner.

Carol Kunkel took a Winnie the Pooh book panel and made this beautiful quilt complete with a personalized label.

Can you believe what Mary Mazzuchi and
Pat Albertson did with our butterfly blocks?

And just to complete the theme they added some of their own blocks and a beautiful butterfly quilt to complete the show!

These are the Quilts of Valor from the June and September workshops. They came out great. Fantastic design Lynn and Lynne!

A special "Thank You" to Pat Bolton who is our photographer of the Month.

Mount Vernon Chapter Challenge 2010-2011

It’s Just a Matter of “Time”

Do you ever feel like you’re running out of time, perhaps pressed for time... Do you have a favorite time of day, a favorite time of year... Or, are you one with too much time on your hands, or enjoy playtime, or have a favorite bedtime story... Do you find giving a time out restores order in your house... Do you plant plenty of thyme in your summer garden? Since the beginning of time, there have been many clichés coined about having too much or too little time.

So, this year’s challenge is to create a quilt that conveys a sense of time or common cliché within the given time constraints, while following the rules below.

Remember, Challenge Quilts are meant to try us, stretch us, and encourage us to take risks. For some, it is quite possible that this challenge will be something you’ve not tried before, and for others it may be yet another opportunity to allow for time to let your imagination go. Ignore the quilt police—they are not invited to the party this time. Give yourself permission to play and remember there is no time like the present to get started.

Time Constraints and Rules:
  1. Individual interpretation of the theme is encouraged!
  2. Quilt may be original or traditional in design. Commercial patterns may be used with credit given to the designer.
  3. Quilt may be hand or machine pieced, appliquéd or fused—try something new!
  4. Quilt should finish 24” x 24”.
  5. Incorporate the provided clock hands into your quilt. The use of the clock hands does not require that they be used on a traditional clock face.
  6. Other embellishment is encouraged, although not necessary.
  7. Incorporate an element or concept that represents 12. This can be as easy as using Arabic or a Roman numeral - or any other numeric system - or something that conveys the number 12, as in December being the 12Th month of the year; a flower center might contain 12 French Knots. Or, the quilt could contain 12 blocks, or individual blocks could contain 12 pieces, etc. Be creative...!!!
  8. You may use as many fabrics as you like, print or solid, painted or recycled and they don’t all have to be 100% cotton.
  9. Quilt should be quilted, and bound or faced.
  10. Quilt is considered complete when the sleeve and label are attached.
  11. Deadline is February 8, 2011. Challenge quilts will be revealed during Show and Tell following our business meeting. Please resist the urge to share your challenge quilt with the membership until that time. Quilters will be given the opportunity to hang their quilts in the Group Category in the 2011 QU Show.
  12. Taking a chance is what leads a quilter to create real AWE...!!! Relax, enjoy, and create what makes your heart tick!

Presidents’ Message

As the dog days of summer come to an end, vacations become a fond memory, and I send my youngest off to his senior year of college, I get excited for all the wonderful quilting opportunities planned for Mt. Vernon!

Lynn Eccelston and Gigi Corbin have filled our calendar with fun interesting programs and workshops to expand our skills and spark creativity.

Barbara Tucker and Ro Coller have teamed up again to make our Annual Auction a successful fundraiser. Watch for details on how you can best support this event.

Chairs for Challenge/BOM/Mystery, Rhonda Adams and Beth Smith, have worked this summer and planned something for us. I don’t know what it is yet and I’m excited for the reveal.

We still have Committee Chair spots to fill. They are: Quilt Show Committee, Quilt-In, and Community Outreach. Our duties for this year’s Quilt Show are Programs and Cards. Most of the work will come after the first of the year. Agnes Purcell has offered to help the chair of this committee with the computer related parts. The Quilt-In is a one-day event. I will be happy to serve on this committee but I don’t have time to chair the committee. In the past the Community Outreach Committee has hung quilts in public places (i.e. libraries and Hollin Hall), with information on when and where we meet. This public display helps new people to the area to find us.

Please consider chairing one these remaining committees. It is especially important to fill Quilt Show Committee as they have already started to meet. If you haven’t already signed up to be a member of one of our committees listed below, please see the chair and offer your services.

Many hands make light work! Plan to come 15 minutes early or to stay 15 minutes late to help with set-up and takedown.

In the crazy quilt of life, I’m glad you’re in my block of friends ……… Lynne Fishburn

Message from the VPs

We scheduled some fantastic programs for the upcoming year. In September, there will be a workshop on September 21 with Valerie McMickle. The project is a circular bargello quilt or table topper done with four fabrics. It would be terrific as a holiday table top or tree skirt, but of course, you could do any color combination that would suit you. It’s stunning executed in rainbow colors. The fee for the class is $50.00 and includes a speciality ruler and the pattern. We still have slots open; the sign up form is on the blog.

On September 28, we are having the culmination of the summer UFO challenge. We hope that our members have been working diligently on all those unfinished projects. Bring them in for an extended show-and-tell and be prepared to tell us just how long those now finished items had been lingering in your sewing room! Because of this UFO show-and-tell extravaganza, we won’t be having show and tell at our regularly scheduled business meeting in September.
