MVQU Celebrates National Quilting Day, March 21, 2009

Several MVQU members got together on Saturday, March 21st, to stitch at the Mt. Vernon Governmental Center to celebrate National Quilting Day.

National Quilting Day is celebrated each year on the third Saturday of March. The National Quilting Association declared this holiday beginning in 1991 to celebrate fabulous quilts and those who make them. The association suggests that if you are a quiltmaker, spend a minute to recognize and appreciate that you have truely been blessed with a special skill and if you are not a quiltmaker, wrap yourself into a quilt and enjoy the warmth.

2009 QU Raffle Quilt, "Fanfare in Blue"

The 2009 Quilters Unlimited raffle quilt was created by the Arlington chapter. Pieced fans in crisp clear shades of royal, indigo, turquoise and periwinkle are set on a mix of white and cream prints. Some of the background fabrics were made by the members using rubber stamps and textile paints, so the quilt incorporates prints that are unique to this project. All of the fabrics were pre-washed and pre-shrunk before the sewing began. Lisa Langlais machine quilted the top. “Fanfare in Blue” is 88" X 97" and will fit a queen-sized bed.

Raffle tickets for the 2009 QU Raffle Quilt, "Fanfare in Blue," are $1, and will be available for sale in the front area of the Show at the Dulles Expo Center from June 5th to June 7th. The drawing for this magnificent quilt will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, June 7, 2009 at the show. The winner need not be present to win.

Jinny Beyer's New Book, "The Quilter's Album of Patterns"

Jinny Beyer's newest book, "The Quilter's Album of Patchwork Patterns, is an encyclopedia of quilt block designs. Jinny will do a book signing for it on June 13, 2009 from 3 to 5 pm at The Jinny Beyer Studio in Great Falls, Virginia.

Jinny says, "I am excited finally to be able to share this labor of love with you. It includes more than 4000 pieced blocks illustrated in color and featuring my fabrics. I developed a new approach that simplifies the drafting process so you can easily use them to create your own quilts in any size."

Jinny has posted the latest edition of her studio newsletter on her web site. Click on http://www.blogger.com/here to view it now. Two new fabulous fabric collections, expected to arrive in March and April, are featured, and there are dozens of classes and workshops offered through June at the Studio. Jinny will be teaching several classes.

February 2009 Show & Tell

Lynn Miller spent time chasing away the winter blues in January quilting up these two Snowman wall hangings.

Marjorie Parkyn finished off these “freebie” panels from the MVQU donation table into wonderful quilts.
#1 Rail Fence blocks finish off the “cheater panel” in the center of this quilt.

#2 A collection of Laurel Birch fabrics finish off the mermaid panel of the same.

#3 The wonderful collection of fabrics in this quilt “do all the work” according to Marjorie.

Pat Alfredson finished these beautiful appliqué blocks by designer Susan Delaney and put them in this beautiful setting…look for this quilt on display the 2009 Quilters Unlimited Quilt Show.

The use of the Split Nine-Patch block is a perfect choice to showcase the hot and cold colored fabrics for this quilt that Pat plans to donate to a soldier at Walter Reed Hospital.

Pat made this “Get Well Soon” quilt using Tonga Batiks for her sister who has upcoming hip surgery.

Carolyn Paden shared her quilt titled “Good Morning Mary Sunshine”, a phrase her grandmother often used to greet her sister Mary, whom she says, was not a morning person.

Carolyn shares her version of the popular pattern, "Stella Blue."

Ellen Patton shows off her finished quilt titled “My Navy Heaven” from the My Blue Heaven workshop with Bonnie Hunter in January. Ellen will donate this one to “Quilts of Valor”, an effort she is passionate about.

Ellen’s “Love” quilt is from another class taught by Bonnie Hunter at Springfield QU called Crumb Quilting. What fun!

Cathy Hanratty’s quilt is titled “Celtic Batik.”

Libby Dudley’s “Secret Friendship” is an exercise in Nine-Patch, Bonnie Hunt inspired.

Ann Marlin fussy cut the cardinals fabric beautifully for the block centers and borders of this quilt. Ann purchased this kit at a quilt show last year.

Kathleen Pelligrini has met the 2009 UFO Challenge already for this year by completing this beautiful Redwork quilt.

Kathleen’s beautiful floral appliqué blocks feature three-dimensional embellishments, such beautiful details.

Bert Garino made this quilt titled “Monterrey Dreams” for her granddaughter’s upcoming 7th birthday. The addition of the butterflies personalizes this quilt since her granddaughter lives near a butterfly farm in CA.

“Quilt to Perfect Harmony” will be featured at the 2009 Quilters Unlimited Quilt Show Challenge, “All the World is a Stage”. Bert has found a new love in the use of Tsukineko fabric pens; notice the hands and legs on each of her quilt folks.

Nancy McGlasson finished her “Trip Around the World”. Each trip around was added as a fabric was discovered and collected during many of Nancy’s travels around the world… hand pieced, too.

Ro Coller shows off “Endless Piecing”, her completed top from the “My blue Heaven” workshop with Bonnie Hunter…done in stunning shades of green. A wonderful adaptation of the border blocks makes Ro’s quilt unique.

Barbara Tucker made this quilt as a wedding gift for a special couple... be sure to check out the label on the back!

Jim Melton will enter his President’s Quilt made from the blocks by the members of the Fairfax Chapter where he served as Chapter President in 2006 in the 2009 Quilters Unlimited Quilt Show.

…as well as his Union Flag quilt.
Finally, a Show & Tell from afar... Gene Ives writes, "This is a raffle wall hanging I just finished to give to this place where I'm living to celebrate their 23rd "birthday next month. I'm really enjoying using these new clay based colored pencils from England that you can apply water (by brush) and it looks like a watercolor and when it's dry it's permanent. Wooohooo!"
Many thanks to Rhonda Adams for the captions.

Emily Martin Lecture & Trunk Show and Workshop
March 24th and 25th, 2009

Appliqué Artist Emily Martin will be sharing her glorious collection of appliqué quilts and giving a lecture on March 24th at 12:30 pm, Hollin Hall Senior Center, Room 112. Emily has been quilting for over 30 years, but only within the last 12 years has she found her love for appliqué. After taking a class with Elly Sienkiewicz in 1997, she discovered the world of Baltimore Album quilts and started her first all appliqué quilt. It is named “Baby Steps to Baltimore” and it launched her teaching career. She teaches at The Quilt Patch in Fairfax, VA, tours the country giving trunk shows, and has joined the staff of Elly's Appliqué Academy. Her large Baltimore album quilt, “Arriving in Baltimore”, has seen more travel miles than Emily, having gone to Houston to hang behind Elly when she was awarded her Silver Star. Latest honors are her selection to serve on the faculty of Quilting by the Bay in December 2009 with Elly in Lewes, Delaware, and an invitation to teach at Road to California in January 2010.

Wednesday, March 25, 2009, is our “Needle-turn Appliqué workshop with Emily, 9:30 am-3:30 pm, at the Mt. Vernon Governmental Center. There are two openings still available. If interested, please contact Angie Miller at a2miller@live.com.

Small Landscapes Workshop and Lecture with Cynthia England
April 27th and 28th, 2009

Our upcoming workshop with Cynthia England promises to be picture perfect as we learn her “Picture Piecing” technique. Piece by piece we will machine sew our way toward creating one of Cynthia’s original designs. Students may select from either a spring or winter landscape: “Country Road” or “Snow Scene”. Fabric packets are optional and available for an additional fee.

The workshop will be held at the Artistic Artifacts Annex, 4750 Eisenhower Ave, Alexandria, Virginia 22304, from 10:00 am - 3:00 pm, April 27, 2009. We will be sharing this workshop with Burke QU. This workshop is full, but if you would like your name placed on a wait list, contact Angie Miller at a2miller@live.com.

On Tuesday, April 28, 2009, MVQU will enjoy a lighthearted PowerPoint presentation “Why Did I Buy This Ugly Fabric” given by Cynthia beginning at 12:30 pm at the Hollin Hall Senior Center. During her presentation, Cynthia will offer ideas on how to incorporate these fabrics into quilts. Topics discussed include how to design a quilt around a particular fabric, block exchanges, and the various techniques used to create the quilts.

Cynthia’s quilts have won many awards over the years. One of her most recognized quilts, “Piece and Quiet,” was chosen as one of The Twentieth Century’s Best American Quilts in 2000. If you would like to learn more about Cynthia England and her unique piecing style, visit her website at: http://www.englanddesign.com.

MINUTES OF THE FEBRUARY 10, 2009 MEETING
MT. VERNON QU
The meeting was called to order at 12:30 by President, Lynn Miller.

There were no guests or new members.

Minutes of the January meeting
There were two corrections to the minutes:
In 2010 MVQU will have a “bye” for hosting the Spring Quilt In (not a bye for the June quilt show.)
The bylaws – we need to be sure they do not conflict with the bylaws of Big QU and that they reflect our practices. (They do not have to match QU bylaws)

A motion was made by Cathy Hanratty and seconded by Pat Alfredson to approve the minutes as amended. The motion carried.

OLD BUSINESS

June QU Quilt Show

Cathy Hanratty will be measuring and photographing quilts for entry into the show on Tuesdays until February 24th. We will have an ad in the program for the show. Also, anyone else who wants to put in an ad for a business or service may do so. Ads need to be submitted by March 1st. Bert Garino reported that plans for the demos are going well and the time slots are filling up. Some of the class teachers may be doing demos also. Pins and lanyards with a QU logo will be sold at the show. For the Mark Lipinski lecture, members will need to show their membership cards to gain free entrance to the lecture. Items that we offer in the boutique will not be discounted in the last hours of the show. We will have workshops on March 3rd and 21st to make items for the boutique. Auction items should have a value of $150 and up. Andrea Gribble provided a list of the classes available at the show. You may also check them out online at www.quiltersunlimited.org. Longarm machine classes will be available Thursday through Sunday as well as several classes on “e-quilt.” Sign up forms for the classes can be found on line. Ro Coller said that we will need many items for the boutique. She and Bert will gather ideas for same.

Spring Quilt-In

The quilt in will be held March 15th at Falls Church High School. We need to bring our chapter banner, show & tell items, and a dish to share.

Retreat
March 16th – 19th are the dates for our spring retreat. If you wish to go, please contact Ro Coller and send in your check. There are still some spaces left.

National Quilt Day – Saturday, March 21
We will have a retreat that day at the Mt. Vernon Governmental Center from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. There are several projects suggested for the day:
Open sew – bring your own project
2 ½ in strip project lead by Lynn Miller
Chenille quilts for special needs children
Bert Garino’s demonstration and workshop

Nominating Committee
Jim Melton announced that he had formed a committee and that many of the positions have already been filled with nominations. Working to find a VP is next on the agenda. The nominations will be submitted in March and voted on in April.

Upcoming Programs
February 24th will be the lecture and workshop with Sharon Schamber at the senior center. Emily Martin will join us on March 24th for a lecture and March 25th for an appliqué workshop.

June Luncheon
Plans are underway for our luncheon to be held at the Mt. Vernon Inn. Please make your reservations with Rhonda Adams or Beth Smith. The cost of the meal is $20 and needs to be paid when you sign up. Rhonda and Beth presented the snowman and tree blocks to be made and turned in by the luncheon.

NEW BUSINESS

Robert’s Rules of Order

It has been suggested that we follow more closely these rules in running our meetings.

Joint Board Meeting
We will hold a joint meeting with the old and new boards in April or May – date to be announced.
Quilt for the QU show raffle in 2012
Barbara Zygiel evaluated the quilt donated by Lynn Miller for the quilt show raffle. She determined that if at least 10 people did not offer to help with the hand quilting, the quilt should be machine quilted. We did not meet this requirement, and the group voted to have the quilt machine quilted. Ellen Patton offered to donate the quilting. Pat Alfredson will make a bag for transporting the quilt and Cathy Hanratty and Pat will apply the binding.

Audit
We need to have our books audited between the end of June and September. Gail Franchi agreed to do the audit.

Vendor Responsibility at the 2010 QU Show
There was a discussion of whether this should be the responsibility of one person for the length of the show or if the job should be shared. If only one person takes on this job, perhaps the chapter should help pay for hotel expenses if that person needs to stay over during the show. It was suggested that Thursday night is the most important night for staying over because of traffic on Friday morning. We will have further discussion on this matter later.

Programs for 2009-2010

It was suggested that we have more in-house programs next year. We will have the auction, the December luncheon and the Spring luncheon. If we have 2-3 outside speakers or teachers, we might fill the rest of the months with in-house programs. Mary Mashuta will be coming for the Fall Big QU lecture and workshop in October. Margaret Miller is tentatively scheduled for the spring. This will be discussed further at later meetings.

Woodlawn Needlework Show
Kathy Z. announced that the show would be held during the month of March and urged us to attend and to also enjoy the food offered.

2009 Silent Auction
Barbara Tucker circulated a list of items that she would like for the silent auction in the fall.

Hospitality
The refreshments for today were provided by Marge Barondes, Gigi Corbin, and Cathy Hanratty.

Door Prizes
The prizes were won by Gail Franchi, Gail English, and Beth Smith.

Show & Tell
Those participating were Lynn Miller, Marjorie Parkyn, Pat Alfredson, Carolyn Paden, Ellen Patton, Cathy Hanratty, Libby Dudley, Ann Marlin, Kathy Pellegrini, Bert Garino, Nancy McGlasson, Barbara Tucker, Ro Coller, and Jim Melton.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 2:00 pm.

Respectfully submitted,
Dotty Eisenhour, Secretary

Sharon Schamber Lecture & Trunk Show

With over 100 in attendance, including many members from our sister QU chapters, Mt. Vernon had the pleasure of hosting Master Quilter, Sharon Schamber, on February 24, 2009. Playing witness to her exquisite quilts and machine quilting in person was an aweing opportunity. Many thanks to Margaret Chandler and Bert Garino for sharing their wonderful photos featured in this slideshow. Relive the experience!

SHARON REMINDS US OF THE IMPACT OF COLOR
Everyone has a favorite color, one that makes you feel good about yourself. It's a color you return to when you're having trouble choosing fabrics for a new project, but more importantly the colors you choose can be used to convey a message. They can evoke a feeling, an emotion, and many colors are universally accepted as symbols of communication, thus playing an integral part in our quilting because they can create a response.
Next time you are choosing colors for a project, think about why you are choosing those colors or in the end if there is message or mood you would like to convey. There are no steadfast rules, only guidelines and theories should you wish to explore them for combining colors successfully while still having fun. Color is magic!
Here's some "color" for thought.
RED--Red is a powerful, head-turning color and always elicits a response. If passion were a color, would it be red? If you want to stimulate, create excitement or give the illusion of fast-paced movement, use red in your quilt.
ORANGE--Orange is a lively color so many quilters shy away from true orange, instead choosing to use the more subtle tones of peach and rust. When used in small amounts, it can be exciting and often symbolizes pride and ambition.
YELLOW--By its very nature, yellow creates warmth in a quilt when used. It can indicate success and intelligence or represent illumination or brilliance.
GREEN--The most nurturing color on the color wheel, green is often associated with charitable traits like caring and giving. It also symbolizes fertility and growth.
BLUE--By far the most popular color, blue, often like an old friend when used in a quilt embodies devotion, trust, equality and truth.
VIOLET--In many societies, violet is the color of royalty and spirituality. The use of violet in a quilt can convey a sense of power, or to represent nostalgia, memories or sentimental yearnings.
