President's Message
Have you heard? Mt. Vernon is having a Spring Yard & Bake Sale on June14th right here at Hollin Hall Senior Center. You can find all the details further on in this newsletter. So as you put away winter and get ready for summer, think of Mt. Vernon. Those items you no longer want can be sold to add income to our resources for future programs and workshops.
Lynn Eccleston and Gigi Corbin have arranged a wonderful lineup of lectures and workshops for us this year. We will wind up our program year with a lecture on May 24th and workshop on May 25th by nationally known quilt teacher Mimi Dietrich.
Collection Day for quilts for the show will be upon us soon. It is time to finish applying those hanging sleeves and labels on your quilts. Directions for how to make a hanging sleeve are available on the Big QU website. I also bring printed copies with me to the meetings.
June 3, 4 & 5 are the dates for the Quilters’ Unlimited 38th Annual Quilt Show at the Dulles Expo Center. Set up day is June 2, and we need your help. Patricia Bolton our quilt collector needs help on June 2nd and 5th. I need helpers on June 2nd to pin the information cards onto all the entries for the quilt show. You can email me if you can help or sign-up at the Business or Program Meetings. There are still seats available for the Eleanor Burns lecture on June 2 at NOVA. Registration forms are available on the Big QU website, or see me for a form at the meetings. Everything you need to register for a class at the show is available online, from availability, to cost and supply lists.
It is not too late to make a reservation for our June 7th Luncheon at Indigo Landing. You can find details in this newsletter.
In May we begin collecting dues for next year. Our year begins July 1 and ends June 30. We are also looking for committee chairs for next year too. Let the current Board or incoming Board know if you have an interest in a standing committee or proposal for a new activity.
Joan Bingman has planned our next Charity Workshop for Tuesday, May 31st. Come and join us help those in need.
I look forward to seeing you at our next meeting.

Meet the Slate of Officers for 2011-2012
MVQU will elect its 2011-2012 officers on May 10, 2011 during the business meeting. Here are the proposed officers for the year:
Co-President – Suzanne Shaw
I joined the MVQU last year after attending a meeting with my mother-in-law Kathleen Shaw. She introduced me to quilting in 1998. When I attended the NVQU show at NVCC in Annandale, I went home and tore up some scrap material, made a few blocks, and the rest is history.
I was hooked!!!
I joined the Hayfield Country Quilters in 1999 and have served as president for that group Quilting has become a big part of my life. I have attended many quilt retreats in PA, MD, and SC. I have traveled to many states for quilt shows, most recently to NY for the Red and White Show in NYC I have attended a Jinny Byers’ workshop in Hilton Head and have taken numerous quilting classes. I have done presentations on photo transfers and the use of threads for the Hayfield group. I am a former member of Springfield QU.
I keep the Quilters’ Traveling Companions book in my car and stop to quilt shops on family vacations and whenever I get the chance.
Last year I purchased a long arm HQ16 and now do quilting for a service. I have designed and made numerous T-Shirt quilts for various people. I like to do some charity quilting each year and feel good about donating time, talent, service, and finished products to a greater good.
I look forward to a great year with MVQU and to getting to know all of you better.
Co-President – Ruth Morgan
I am a new member to MVQU, having just joining in January after moving to Alexandria last year. As soon as I walked into my first meeting, I felt I belonged and I knew I had found a “quilt home”. I have been a member of other sewing and quilting groups before but there is something different about MVQU. I knew I could get involved and make a difference. I just didn’t know it would be as co-president. But here I am! I am thrilled and honored to be on your Executive Committee and I look forward to the year ahead.
I have my love of fabric and sewing from my grandmother. Needlework, sewing and quilting have been serious hobbies of mine for decades. I have only just realized that most of my quilts have been given away as gifts. I have very few in my own home. It is just so hard to not make them and give them away. I’m sure you all know exactly what I mean. It is my goal to make several for my home these next couple of years. Wish me luck!
On the personal side, I am married and have two grown sons. One is married and lives in Reston and the other lives in North Carolina. No grandchildren yet, maybe someday. Other than quilting, I enjoy cooking and going to the gym and traveling.
Please introduce yourselves to me as I try to learn everyone’s names and “put names to faces”. Also, feel free to contact me either by email or phone if you have any comments or suggestions. I’d love to hear from you. We are going to have a ‘quiltin’ year!
Co-Vice President – Carol Kunkel
I’ve been sewing since I was 7 years old. I created my first quilt in 1974 but then I took a break until I joined MVQU four years ago. Since then I’ve been an avid quilter. I’m still learning new techniques but I especially like appliqué. I served as co-president of MVQU in 208-2009 and as chairman of the Vendor Committee for the 2010 Big QU Quilt Show.
Co-Vice President – Ro Coller
I've been quilting nearly 20 years (first project--a baby quilt for my grandson). I joined Mr. Vernon at the urging of a good friend around the time Hillary Metcalf (a real blast from the past for the old timers) assumed the presidency. My friend, Donna and I were co-presidents for one year and I served alone the next. I love to piece on the machine and hand applique and I thank God each day that we have such talented long arm quilters available. My favorite part of doing a quilt is hand stitching the binding--it means the quilt is done.
Treasurer – Gigi Corbin
I have been doing needlework most of my life. In Germany, where I was born and raised, needlework was a required subject beginning in the second grade. In 2004, when I was purchasing fabrics for a baby quilt for my goddaughter’s first child, a salesclerk recommended that I attend QU’s Annual Quilt Show. I was so WOWED, that I signed up for my first quilting class. After my retirement in 2007, I joined Mt. Vernon QU and quilting quickly became my No. 1 hobby. I served as co-vice president for 2010-011. I also enjoy gardening, cooking, reading and I do many of my own home repairs.
Secretary – Jim Melton
I’ve been a quilter since 1980, a former member of the Arlington guild, former member and former president of the Falls Church guild. I’ve been a member of the Mt Vernon guild fort 4 or 5 years. I generally like to make one or two bed quilt tops a year, to keep me sane.
Nominatin
g Chair – Libby Dudley
I’ve been involved in patchwork projects since around 1972, but got more immersed in the late 1990s and joined MVQU around 4 years ago. I’m into scrappy, probably still channeling my grandmother and the wonderfully cozy quilts she created, often from clothing scraps. MVQU provides such enriching social and learning opportunities that being involved to the extent possible seems appropriate. It enhances my experience and contributes to the group’s vitality. To make MVQU happen, I think each of us has to do something, since members are pretty much a guild’s only resource for leadership, labor, ideas, and camaraderie.
Needed: Committee Chairs for 2011-2012
Kudos to our membership!!!
We have almost filled all of our positions for next year. Just a few remain open.
Hospitality:
Quilters love to eat as much as we love fabric. At our meetings, we gather around the "treats" table as soon as we can. We need a volunteer to lead our hospitality efforts.
Community Service:
Quilters are some of the most giving people around and the members of MVQU are no exception. Traditionally, on the 5th Tuesday Bee, we have used that afternoon to make items for a worthy cause. Our Community Service position is open for a volunteer to organize our efforts.
Newsletter Editor:
This is an important job. We need someone to keep our membership informed to our activities, what is going on within the quilting community and keep us connected. Agnes has done a superb job. We will miss her. She will be available for one more issue to help train the incoming editor but we do need someone for this very important position.
Any volunteers?

A Message from Bert
My dear friends…
I wanted to wait until I got settled in Florida before writing you all a note. I had no idea it would take so long! We lived in hotels (with our dog) for six weeks before closing on our new home in Florida.
It was quite the odyssey with changing hotels (and rooms within hotels) no less than five times. We also managed to include a trip to the E.R., a blown tire (efficiently changed by a group of shaved head and tattooed bikers), a computer that died, and witnessing the first group of tornadoes that swept the country this spring. And the reason we were “homeless” for so long was that we walked away from the short sale home we thought we were driving down here to buy. The bank that was handling the sale had no idea of the concept of “time management”.
But all of the “stuff” we endured during that six weeks was absolutely worth it, because the home we did buy came on the market during that time period at a great price, and it is indeed the house of our dreams. I am working on getting out my stash this week and placing it lovingly in my quilt studio! Our home is also only 9 miles from our son and his family, so we do get to see a lot of our adorable 2 and 4 year old granddaughters!
Thank you so much for all your well wishes and for the beautiful friendship blocks you made for me before I left. I took them with me in the car, so I had them in the hotel(s) to look at and admire. I am going to a quilt guild meeting next week. It is a small group called “Innovative Quilters”, I am looking forward to meeting all the members and enjoying the bond we all have with fellow quilt makers. It’s got to be a good group; the woman that I met that invited me to the meeting is from the same Nebraska town as Rhonda!
Attached is the picture of the quilt I made 1 ½ years ago for my granddaughter’s room in our new home. I couldn’t wait to put it up.
I miss you all! Smiles, Bert

Mt. Vernon Quilters Unlimited Yard & Bake Sale
This year we are going to try something new to add to our treasury. We are going to have a Yard and Bake Sale at Hollin Hall. On Tuesday, June 14th, we will setup tables at Hollin Hall in Room 112 (the big room where we hold our business and program meetings). Bring any items you don’t want any longer, pre-priced and place on a table. All profits will go to Mt. Vernon QU. Any items that do not sell will need to be removed by the person who brought them to the Yard Sale. We will hold the yard sale from Noon till 3 pm. Set-up begins at 11 am.
You may be asking:
- “What can I bring to the Yard Sale?” Any and everything can be put up for sale. Items do not have to be quilt or sewing related.
- “How can I help?” Come early and help setup. Bring stuff to the yard and bake sale. Invite your friends and neighbors to come to the Yard Sale.
- The Bake Sale will run the same as it does for our Fall Auction. Items need to be individually wrapped with an ingredient list attached. Please price your bake sale items as well.
So as you put away winter and get ready for summer, think of MVQU. Those items you no longer want can be sold to add income to our resources for future programs and workshops.
Note: A flier is available here – please copy and post wherever you can.
