President’s Message

In April we elected a new board…and it is a good one… to guide our guild next year. Many members have already volunteered to head committees, but there are still some vacancies. Please step forward and help fill those openings. Not only does it help the guild, it is a wonderful way to build new friendships and enhance your knowledge of our members, our guild, and the “Big QU.” It is your club.

As I hope most of you know by now, our luncheon date has been changed to June 3rd due to primary elections being held on the 10th in room 112. Mary and Pat have put a great deal of time and effort into making this a very special occasion. We all give them a very large and most sincere “thank-you.”

Barbara Olson’s lecture on April 22nd was a special treat for all. Not only were her quilts unbelievably fabulous; her description of her evolution from mom, housewife and worker to a true quilt artist was most enlightening. Unfortunately, I could not attend her workshop, but I hear it got rave reviews. This certainly has been a year of outstanding workshops and lectures. Many thanks to Rhonda and Joyce.

Hope to see you all at the business meeting on May 13th. Don’t forget Marianne is collecting quilts for the Quilters Unlimited show on May 20th and May 27th.

Beth and Cathy

History of Mt. Vernon QU 1997-2007
By Mary Stauss and Janet Betz

The innovation Mt. Vernon began in the early 1990's of providing a raffle quilt made by members (instead of a purchased quilt) continued with more quilts made and/or hand quilted by the members for the Quilters Unlimited Show quilt raffle. Another first was the introduction of a well attended Sunday daytime Quilt-In. In the forefront of 21st Century technology the newsletter became an online blog (2006) with not only chapter news and quilt photos, but user friendly links to web sites and big QU events and speaker/lecturers. A real plus for the chapter is the continued interest from distant former members and friends and relatives.

A national outreach was achieved through two web site ventures. One was the raffling of unique small quilts submitted by the members which raised more than one thousand dollars for Alzheimer research sponsored by Ami Simms’s web site. In an EBay auction to benefit breast cancer research members contributed enough pink squares to complete two quilts which not only garnered high bids, but were selected for inclusion the recently published book, Quilt Pink for Hope.

Our meeting venue in the Hollin Hall Senior Center enhances our community outreach. In addition to two meetings a month, open space is available on non-meeting Tuesdays which provides an atmosphere reminiscent of the old social bees and space for community projects. A deceased member’s work in progress was completed. Members worked on blocks of the month, round robin quilts, two crayon color challenges and “What’s Black, White and ______ All Over?” challenges. Regular meetings have been enlivened with sneaky maneuvers for “secret pals.” In addition to lively programs by talented Big QU members, nationally recognized speakers, including Pat Sloan, Gyleen Fitzgerald and Paula Nadelstern, have instructed, challenged, and amused us.

Membership has doubled from the 70-80's and activities have expanded. Day trips to quilt shows in Lancaster, Fort Washington, Harrisonburg and Sotterly have been enjoyed. Bird -in-Hand has been the scene of two retreats. Local related shows such as the Needlework show at Woodlawn have also been visited by the group. Quilts made by our members are rotated regularly in the nearby public libraries and the office of the senior center.

Programs and teaching with young people has been particularly satisfying. The senior center building shares space with a child care facility and this allowed for a delightful crayon block and quilt project. In conjunction with Redskin players, we held a workshop with the children served by United Community Ministries (UCM) to make a very large wall quilt, again crayon blocks, which was successfully submitted in support of a Fannie Mae grant for housing. In conjunction with UCM’s program of classes for first time mothers, the chapter made more than 250 quilts which were presented at the graduation “shower.”

As in the previous decade, many walker bags were made, but discontinued with new walker designs. A large floral hexagonal quilt was donated to the Mt. Vernon hospital Auxiliary raffle fund raiser. Through a unique association with Southern Maryland Quilt Club many, many lap quilts were donated to the wounded service personnel as they arrived at Andrews Air Force base in Maryland en route to hospitals. Quilts are regularly given to the wounded soldiers at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

Workshop Opportunity
The Clustered Spires Quilt Guild of Frederick, MD has openings in an upcoming workshop, “Simple Dwellings.” Fee is $40 for members and $50 for non-members. Quilt maker Sarah Pavlik will share various liberated techniques to help students design their own quilt composed of simple houses, free form trees, wacky stars, and loosely built blocks. After discussing a variety of techniques and possibilities, students will create several components and design and build their own village quilt. Rules and regulations will be thrown to the wayside as we enter the world of lawless piecing using colorful fabrics and unique designs. Students need not come with a plan, as that will be developed after ideas are explored. An open mind is all that is needed…no experience necessary! Bring your batiks and hand-dyed fabrics as well as geometric prints, fabric scraps and your favorite silk ties that have been waiting for the perfect project, and explore the field of liberated quilt making.

MT. VERNON QU
Minutes of the 4/8/08 Business Meeting

The meeting was called to order at 12:30 PM by Cathy Hanratty.

Minutes
The minutes of the March meeting were approved as presented.

Hospitality
Refreshments were provided by Lynne Fishburne, Angie Miller and Mary Stauss.

Old Business
This is the last day to order the Quilt Pink for Hope book which will be coming out this summer.

Mary Stauss and Janet Betz were thanked for their work on the history of the last 10 years of MVQU.

Committees

Hospitality - Volunteers are needed for the May meeting. April 22 we are at the government center so we do not need refreshments.

Community Ed – Tammy Fletcher is okay with quilts for display.

Programs - Rhonda reminded us of the April 22 lecture at the governmental center with Barbara Olson. The workshop with Barbara will be held on April 21 from 9:30 – 4:00 at the governmental center. On May 27 Monique Schutsky will give a lecture on Sashiko at the Senior Center.

Kathy Edwards reported that she attended the meeting for the Quilt Show last week. They will be able to hang all but 9 quilts that have been submitted. They will return those 9 quilts to their owners. If you visit other chapters, please ask them to sign up to volunteer at the show. 1/3 of the volunteer spaces have been filled so far. There is a need for people to set up on Thursday before the show. The classes at the show are not filled yet. There will be a “seek and find” for children at the show.

Treasurer - (This report is in the attachment that notified you of this posting)

June Luncheon
– Since there will probably be a primary election for the House of Representatives on June 10, we will no doubt have to change the date of the luncheon. Barbara tucker offered her house and we will look for alternative dates at the Senior Center.

Sunshine - Marge Barondes sent a note to Carol Eberhart.

The Senior Center closure policy is as follows: no school=center closed; late school start=center opening at 10 AM; early school closure=senior center closes at noon.

Quilt Collector Marianne Urban will begin collecting quilts in the middle of May. Rhonda will verify the dates.

Pat Alfredson announced that the next sewing circle will be held on Tuesday, April 15. Ro Coller will bring materials for making table runners.

The Bow Tie block exchange will take place following the end of the business meeting.

New Business
Tammy Mannarino announced the slate of officers for 2008-2009:
Co-Presidents: Lynn Miller and Carol Kunkel
Co-Vice Presidents: Angie Miller and Lynn Fishburne
Treasurer: Kathy Edwards
Secretary: Dotty Eisenhour
Nominating Chair: Jim Melton
The slate was elected unanimously.

St. Peters in the Woods at 5911 Fair View Woods Dr. in Fairfax Station will sponsor a lecture by Nancy Smith and Linda Mulligan on Thursday, April 17 at 10 am.

We voted unanimously to ask Big QU to change the schedule of meetings so that they are not all at night.

There was a discussion on whether the quilt show chairman should be an elected position in the guild. We would have to change to bylaws to make that change. It was decided that we not change the bylaws to reflect the idea.

Pat Alfredson said that the Amish blocks are due today. She passed a sign up sheet around for a trip to the Sotterly show on May 16. She also suggested that visiting the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond, which has a quilt collection, might be another road trip. She asked members to sign up if they are interested.

We received a note from Joyce Nicholas who has moved to Kuwait. Her address and email address will be posted on the blog.

Carol Doak will be the speaker at the Annual QU meeting on May 1. The subject will be paper piecing.

Show and Tell – Participants were:
Beverly Dasch
Margie Parkyn
Ann Marlin
Carolyn Paden
Ann Berard
Linda Townsend
Marge Barondes
Jim Melton
Joyce Keating
Kathy Edwards
Rhonda Adams

Door Prizes were won by Rhonda Adams, Ann Marlin, and Pat Alfredson.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 1:40 when refreshments were served and the Bow Tie block exchange took place.

Respectfully submitted,

Dotty Eisenhour, Secretary

Paula's Three Cheese Ball
(from Paula Golden)

The recipe for the Three Cheese Ball (graciously shared by Marion Stein to Paula) that Paula Golden brought to the Mt. Vernon workshop with Barbara Olson follows:

(1) 3 oz. Cream Cheese
1 wedge Blue Cheese
1 jar Borden's very sharp cheese spread (Old English)
1 can pecans
2 cloves garlic
parsley

In mixing bowl combine cream cheese, blue cheese and Borden's cheese spread. Sprinkle chopped garlic on top. Let stand an hour at room temperature. Adding 3 tablespoons chopped pecans, blend well. Chill for easy handling. To remaining chopped pecans add 3 tablespoons parsley and spread on waxed paper. When cheese is chilled, form into ball and roll in chopped pecans and parsley. Wrap in foil and refrigerate.
