One-day Retreat, January 16, 2007

On Tuesday, January 16th, twenty-one members of the Mt. Vernon Chapter got together for a one-day retreat at the Mt. Vernon Government Center, writes Pat Alfredson, across from the Sherwood Hall Library. They laughed, talked, pinned about four quilts, arranged blocks for the Martha Plank quilt that Janet Betz is organizing, and, of course, talked some more. About ten quilters went to Five Guys for hamburgers and French fries.

Kathy Edwards headed up a project of postcard quilts for Ami Simms's Alzimheimer's Disease auction.

Everyone agreed that we should do this more often because getting together to sew helps build good relationships and gives us a chance to really get to know each other.

Rhonda Adams sent photographs, writing about each one. This first photo is of Mary Kelleher sewing her scrap basket blocks, apparently a careful saver of even the smallest pieces of her fabric. Somehow she finds a way to piece it into yet another block.

Barbara Z gets help basting her "Honeymoon Cottages" quilt.

Kathy Edwards machine quilting her quilt.

And just as a reminder, the following ladies are on Hospitality for Tuesday, January 23rd:
Ann Martin
Beth Smith
Margorie Barondes

Road to California 2007 photos--Coming later!!

(Laura Wasiloski's paintbrush quilt--fused hand-dyed silk. On left is a close-up of the amazing quilting--you can click to enlarge)

I went all day to the Road to California quilt conference yesterday and have another day there today. I took a class from Gabrielle Swain, saw lots of quilts, and bought some fabulous fabric. Look back later (in a couple of days, after I recover) for some photos and commentary.

Block of Month & MVQU Meeting Minutes

Block of the Month Blocks

Here's a fine display of several Blocks of the Month. I don't know which blocks belong to which quilter, but they look like a flowered garden of points and stars.

Committees:
Treasurer’s report is in the email that notified you of this post.

Quilt Collector: Dotti Eisenhour will be photographing and measuring quilts today, the 16th, 30th and February 6th and 13th. Entries are due in February 26th.

Programs: We need to think of more fund raising ideas so that we can have some good programs. It was suggested that we have more finished items for the silent auction that the general public would be interested in buying. The program on the 23rd will be hands on. Rhonda has the supply list and it will be in the blog. Gyleen Fitzgerald (Colourfulstitches.com) is doing the lecture on February 27th and teaching a class the day before. The cost is $10 plus $5 for the pattern. There is a supply list which includes 2 special rulers. Rhonda will be ordering some rulers this afternoon for anyone interested.

New Business:

QU Board Meeting: The annual meeting will be May 3rd with Sally Schneider as the speaker. Pepper Cory will be doing the fall lecture and workshops (October 16-20). If we are interested, there is no one doing the raffle quilt for 2009.

Mystery Quilt: Pat will be starting the four part mystery quilt next month.

Ami Simms Quilts to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association. Kathy Edwards brought samples of her quilts. These are small size art quilts that are small enough to be mailed in a Priority Mail envelope. They are auctioned on line.

There will be a Mimi Dietrich trunk show at Capital Quilts on Sunday, January 28th.

Barbara Zygiel, Donna Walbrecht, Marjorie Parkyn, Kay Brill, Lucy Petit, Mary Kelleher, Joyce Keating and Barbara Dove all shared some of their handiwork with us.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:10 PM so we could all enjoy the refreshments.

Respectfully submitted,

Cathy Hanratty, Secretary

Show and Tell and Other Fun

Our Mt. Vernon quilters have been very busy over the holidays, as the following pictures show. (We also seem to have some shy quilters, but the names are underneath the photos. Don't forget to peek out and say hi when your photo is taken.)

Marjorie Parkyn has been very productive. First up, a block.

And then Marjorie showed us two quilts (above and below). If anyone wants to send me names of the blocks, or quilts or any other info, I can post the information.

Mary Kelleher is hiding behind her Stack N Whack as Mary admires it.

Kay Brills holds up her completed borders-exchange quilt.

Donna displays a rainbow of twining blocks that would brighten up any January day.

Joyce Keating displays an unusual and beautiful set of sampler blocks.

Want an interesting way to display your quilts? Kay Brill has the answer.

And the final Show and Tell Quilt for this January 9th meeting was Lucy's Petitt's brightly colored quilt of many stars.

Crayola Challenge
Joyce Keating sent along this little poem:

We could learn a lot from crayons:
Some are sharp,
Some are pretty,
Some are dull,
Some have weird names,
And all are different colors....
But they all have to learn to live in the same box.

In our Crayon Box for today, two Barbaras show what colors inspired them.

Barbara Zygiel's miniature quilt displays the two colors with a graceful bow.

Barbara Dove shows her flamingo strutting above a blue, blue pond.

Well done, ladies. Are there any more Crayola Challenges out there to be seen?

And to finish off our post, Pat Alfredson sent her secret potion for removing pencil marks from quilts:

Magic Potion That Removes Pencil Marks
I use this solution to rub out pencil marks from my quilting designs. It really works. I mix a new batch each time I want to use it. I use a soft, new toothbrush and rub gently.
1/4 cup water
3/4 cup rubbing alcohol
7 or 8 drops of Palmolive green liquid dish detergent.

Godspeed, Susan Constant and Discovery

Gene Ives dropped me a note telling me that the design for our guild's QU Jamestown Challenge came from the quarter designed for Virginia. I went online and found the following info on the U.S. Mint website:

"The Virginia quarter, the tenth coin released under the 50 State Quarters® Program, honors Jamestown, Virginia, our nation's first permanent English settlement. Jamestown turns 400 years old in 2007. The selected design features the three ships, Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery. These ships brought the first English settlers to Jamestown.
On April 10, 1606, King James I of England chartered the Virginia Company to encourage colonization in the New World. The first expedition, consisting of the three ships depicted on the quarter, embarked from London on December 20, 1606. On May 12, 1607, they landed on a small island along the James River nearly 60 miles from the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. It was here the original settlers (104 men and boys) established the first permanent English settlement called Jamestown, in honor of King James I."

Thanks, Gene, for your ingenuity and talent!

Co-Presidents --Mary Mazzuchi and Pat Alfredson
Co-Vice Presidents--Joyce Keating and Rhonda Adams

President’s Message
Happy New Year! Can you believe – 2007! Sounds unreal to me. Our year is half over. However, the second part is full of interesting things. First is our One-Day Retreat which will be at the Government Center on Tuesday, January 16th from 9:30 am to 3-ish. Bring your own projects and we’ll talk and sew and talk.

Next, Rhonda and Joyce have lined up some interesting programs for this year starting with Carolyn Lynch on the 23rd. She is always entertaining and has some new ideas on marking to share with us. There’s more about the programs later in this newsletter.

Our Jamestown Challenge quilt is coming along very well. It’s to the quilting stage and will be worked on by a different quilter each week. If you’d like to “lend a needle,” let us know. Other on-going projects include our crayon challenge quilts. These are “popping” out everywhere and each is interesting. Some of the color combinations are really stretching our members' “comfort” zones. Congratulations to each of you who has finished; the rest of you get to work.

Starting next month, there will be another mystery quilt. It will be in five parts, ending at the June Luncheon with finished tops for Show-And-Tell. Each month the instructions will be handed out at the business meeting.

We have a lot of challenges, projects and workshops this year. Of course, not everything appeals to everyone, but we hope that there are some activities that interest every member and “stretch” our horizons. It’s been suggested that the chapter might want to enter two group entries – our mystery quilts and our block-of-the-month quilts from last year. We can discuss this at the business meeting this year.

As to New Year’s Resolutions, Pat has made the same as last year – to finish one project out of her TO DO pile. She was successful in finishing a project each month last year, but kept adding new projects so the pile didn’t go down. This year she says she’ll finish one “old” project one for each she adds plus one a month, so that the pile will get “manageable.” We’ll see.

Mary’s first resolution is to get her daughter married, preferably without upset. Lots of luck to her on that. For quilting, she resolves to “clean up” old projects as well. Again, Happy New Year. We hope that 2007 is even more productive as 2006.
Mary and Pat

Welcome to New Members
Welcome back to Kathleen Pellegrini who has rejoined for the year.

Quilt Show
There was a meeting of the Quilt Show Committee on December 21st. The pin design has been finalized; it’s on the website. There are 65 vendors and four corporate sponsors. All but two of the teachers are finalized for the classes.

Here are a few facts about our responsibility for the show. We’re in charge of the demonstrations. There are demonstrations each hour of the quilt show. Right now we have three openings to find demonstrators for; the rest have been filled by vendors. If anyone is interested in showing other quilters a trick or technique, please contact Pat Alfredson.
Later we will need people to volunteer to oversee the demonstration booth. That will entail making sure the demonstrator shows up and has what is necessary for the demonstration. Some of the demonstrators are vendors who will need to have a “booth sitter” – someone to watch their booth while they are volunteering. We will have a signup sheet for this later in the year.

Each member of QU is entitled to enter a quilt in our show. Usually there’s room for more than one, too. The entry application is on the QU website. You need a separate copy for each quilt. You can download as many copies as you need. If you do not have access to the Internet, contact Pat Alfredson or Dotty Eisenhour, our Quilt Collector, and they will get one for you. The deadline this year is February 26th.

News from Big QU
The Quilt Show meeting was cancelled this month due to weather. The entry form is still being worked on via e-mail and should be ready soon. We’ll have it in time for the January business meeting.

And another note from Dotty Eisenhour about Submissions:
The QU 2007 show is coming up sooner than you think! It would be wonderful if the Mt. Vernon chapter would be well represented by as many quilts as possible. So many great quilts have been shown at Show and Tell and I know there are many more that are lurking in your homes that could be displayed. Here is a list of dates pertinent to the show:
  • January 9 - 12:00--measure and photograph quilts before business meeting
  • January 16--measure and photograph quilts at bee
  • January 30--measure and photograph quilts at bee
  • February 6 - 12:00--measure and photograph quilts before business meeting
  • February 13--measure and photograph quilts at bee (if you can help, Dotty will need someone to do this on that day)
  • February 26 - quilt show entry papers due (it would be good to get them in at least a week before that).
  • Month of May - Dotty will be collecting the quilts. Please get them to me as soon as possible in the month.
  • June 1 - 3 show
If you have any questions, please call Dotty Eisenhour at 703-836-0430. Thanks - and let's have a big showing!

Hospitality Reminder
Jim Melton is off sailing the ocean blue (he's crossing the Atlantic on the QE 2 from England to NY in January) here is a list of those who have graciously volunteered to feed the weary quilters of Mt Vernon. Please feel free to communicate and coordinate if you'd like. Phone contacts and emails may be found in the Mt Vernon Directory.

Interested in Making an Art Quilt?
Kathy Edwards writes: The board asked me if I would be interested in spearheading an effort to show members how to do an Alzheimer’s Art quilt. I’m new at art quilts myself, but am willing to share my limited knowledge. The finished quilts can be no larger than 9” X 12” (yes, INCHES!).

If you look at the right hand column of our Blog, you will see the first item under Quilters Links. Click on the Alzheimer’s Quilt Initiative. When you click on that link you can read all about the effort which Ami Sims of Flint, Michigan began last year. You can view all of the quilts made and sold thus far.

If after looking at the web page, you are still interested in making a quilt for this worthy cause let me know either via email (quilterk@cox.net) or at one of the bees or the January business meeting. No, you don’t have to be an artist to do one of these quilts. You just have to have a little imagination and from what I’ve seen produced by the Mt Vernon members, we don’t lack that talent. So start the New Year off right and make a resolution to make at least ONE of these quilts and I bet you won’t be able to stop at just one when you see how easy it is.

2007 Quilt Show Challenge Update

Our 2007 Jamestown challenge quilt is well under way. You may recall the challenge was to create a wall-hanging sized quilt that commemorates the 400th anniversary of the settling of Jamestown. The quilt is to be displayed at the 2007 QU Quilt Show in a special exhibition. As a reminder the challenge rules were:
1. The outer perimeter must be between 30” and 156” around.
2. The colors bright blue, light olive green, cranberry and gold will be used somewhere on the front of the quilt.

3. A symbol of Jamestown shall be depicted, i.e. Godspeed sailboat, Jamestown fort, colonial people, Powhatan Indian Village, food of the day (corn, fowl, fish), transportation (canoes), housing, wildlife, etc.
4. Three layers shall be used in the construction of the quilt and hand tied quilts are prohibited.
5. Embellishments are highly desired.
The due date is when the quilt show entry forms are due. (February 26, 2007)

To the left is a photo of our “work in progress”. A big thanks to the talented and loved Gene Ives for the rendering of the Godspeed that fills the center square, and to the ladies who contributed to the beautiful stitching and design of the quilt. With all the red work complete and the borders sewn on, the quilt is now ready for quilting. Pat, Barbara and Rhonda are meeting to mark the quilt this week, and the hand quilting, for which the Mt Vernon quilters are so often recognized, will commence. We have volunteers lined up through the end of January to help with the quilting, but more may be needed in early February for completion. Please contact Pat Alfredson if you have the time, nimble fingers and would like to add your special touch to our Chapter’s submission.

Clearing Out. . . Minutes from October and November. . . thanks to Cathy H.!

Mt Vernon QU Business Meeting--October 10, 2006
The meeting was called to order at 12:37 PM by co-presidents Mary Mazzuchi and Pat Alfredson. There was one new member, Norma Jean Camacho (sp?) present. There were no guests.
A motion was made by Dotty Eisenhour and seconded by Janet Betz to approve the September minutes which were printed in the newsletter and on the blog. The motion was carried.
Members were warned that there is a 3 meeting grace period for new members and after that anyone without a name tag should make a $0.50 donation to the jar.
Barbara Dove's report is in the email you received to alert you to this blog. We don't post our financial info online.

Old Business
Thank you to Tammy and Anne for the wonderful bus trip to the Virginia Quilt Museum. Anyone missing a Debbie Mumm book should contact Judi Hendrickson. It was left on the bus and is now at her house. Cranston Printworks is going to do a line of reproduction fabrics based on quilts in the museum. The museum is looking for volunteers to staff it on the fourth Saturday of every month.
There are still spots open for the 3-day retreat to Bird-in-Hand Inn in Lancaster in March. Sign up sheet is available.
Eight people came to the Quilt Pink retreat on September 30th. There were 43 blocks submitted which resulted in 2 quilt tops. One top is out being quilted now and the other one will go as soon as we find someone to do it. Ro Coller is making the labels. Other retreats are currently being planned for January 20th and April 14th.
Volunteers are still needed for the QU long range planning committee. Kim Fess is the coordinator. There is no schedule of meetings at this time.
The St Francis Quilt Show on September 30th was incredible. Three of our members participated.

Committees
  • Newsletter: As always, the deadline for the newsletter is the 1st of the month. If you would like to have anything posted on the blog contact Elizabeth Eastmond.
  • Silent Auction: Kay Brill reported that there have been 216 items donated for the auction. The auction will take place from 12:30-1:30 PM on Tuesday, October 24th followed by the live auction. Kay also reported that Ro Coller, Marge Barondes and herself attended the funeral for Gene Ives husband and that it was lovely.
  • Quilt Show: We need a rep to big QU for the quilt show committee. We are in charge of demonstrations again.
  • Quilt Collector: Nothing to report.
  • Programs: The next program meeting will be on November 28th and will be Painted Flower Collages with Linda Cooper. There is a $10 fee for the “hands on” portion where you will be able to paint 2 canvases. This is the last day to turn in your surveys and secret pal form. The secret pal drawing will be right after the meeting. Some people were interested in doing a one day mystery quilt workshop, possibly in January. When members signed in they drew 2 crayons out of a pumpkin and were given an index card. They were asked to write their name on one side with one of the crayons and their phone number or birth date on the other side with the other crayon. The challenge is to match fabric to the 2 crayon colors and make something – a pillow, lap quilt, wall hanging, or even a full size quilt. Two additional colors can be added as accents. Members who finish this challenge will be eligible for a prize drawing at the June luncheon.
  • Greeter/Membership: Nothing to report.
  • Hospitality: Jim Melton passed around the sign up sheet for hostesses. Today’s hostesses are Frankie Carroll, Mia Oshima and Blanch Carpenter.
  • Block of the Month: There were at least 10 participants in the BOM which was a 4 patch. Next time it is a 9 patch. Janet Betz won the drawing for a prize. There is an error on the instructions for the BOM. The side strip should be 33” x 1 _”. Barbara also said that she uses “rough and ready” Shrinky Dink to make her templates. It is available at Michaels. She brought in her sand paper board which stabilizes the fabric while you mark it for hand piecing or appliqué. Check Keepsake Quilting or some of the other catalogs for them. You can also staple a piece of sandpaper to the inside of a file folder for one that you can then close up.
  • Senior Center Rep: Nothing to report.
  • Community Education: Lynn Poulin needs quilts to display at the senior center and library.
  • Sunshine: No cards were sent out this month.
  • December Luncheon: Nothing to report.
  • Winter Quilt In: We will be responsible for the refreshments table in March.
  • New Member Kits: Three kits were handed out.
  • Historian: Kathy Edwards is taking pictures today.
  • Round Robin: The Round Robin is on its next to last row. The tops will be done in time for the December luncheon.
  • May Luncheon: See new business.
  • Fund Raiser: Nothing to report.

New Business
  • Quilt Pink: Ro Coller made a motion and Pat Alfredson seconded it that the chapter pay for the cost of getting the 2 tops quilted. The first quilt top is costing $50 plus shipping and thread. The motion was carried.
  • Future Retreats: The attendance for the Saturday retreat was 8 while the Tuesday retreat had 18 members in attendance. The April workshop will have to be on Saturday but the January one could be changed. Suggestions for future workshops included Ami Sims Alzheimer Quilts and fabric postcards.
  • Quilts of Valor: Give quilts of valor to Pat and she will get them sent out.
  • May Luncheon: Kathy Edwards made a motion and Norma Jean seconded it that the May luncheon be moved to the first Tuesday in June (6/5). This would allow for quilts to be returned to members after the quilt show. The motion was carried. This also allows for the addition of another Program Speaker in the May 22 slot. Rhonda will schedule Pat Sloan to speak with the possibility of her doing a workshop in September on the first or third Tuesday. The workshop topic is to be determined. Cathy Hanratty made a motion and Kathy Edwards seconded it that members participating in the workshop will pay a fee so that the chapter does not bear the entire cost. The motion carried.
  • Fall Quilt In: Thursday, October 26th from 3:30 to 8:30 PM at Falls Church HS. The theme is “Go West Young Quilter”. There will be a western fabric exchange (up to 4 fat quarters can be exchanged), and “Ugly Fabric” game and a trading post with gently used items to swap. Water and sodas will be provided. Bring a covered dish to share. If you want to carpool talk to some other members to see who is going.

Closing
Rhonda Adams, Joyce Keating, Mary Kelleher, Barbara Edler, Pat Alfredson, Ann Marlin, Marjorie Parkyn and Cathy Hanratty had show and tell items.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:20 PM so everyone could enjoy refreshments.

  • Round Robin: The 2 round robins going on now will be displayed at the Holiday Luncheon.
  • Fund Raising: No report.

New Business:

  • Sally Schneider will be the presenter at the annual meeting.
  • Directories will be out soon.
  • We are obligated to provide items for the Artisans United gift shop during January and February.
