Show and Tell February 14, 2012

Well we had a "Favorite Holiday" challenge.  The members were asked to make a quilt depicting their favorite federal, religious or vacation holiday.

We will begin, today being Valentine's Day, with Barbara Dove's "Vintage Valentine" with the design by Verna Mosquera.

"Calvin and Sierra Go To Hawaii".  Sierra found this leftover Hawaiian fabric and she used it to border the center panel that she designed.

Here is Mary Mazzuchi's favorite holiday, "Christmas"  The quilt is held by Pat Alfredson.

Barbara Jones shows her "Cape Cod Vacation." Olde America Antiques sold the fabric "postcard" in the welcome center. They remind her of the good time everyone had last summer.

Here is Tammy Mannarino UFO #14 from the book--"14 Ways to Applique" by Mimi Dietrich. She is hoping to finish this for the show!
Libby loves to "Travel". This Currier and Ives panel of Trains was found at Zook's last fall and made "into a Christmas gift for her 'Train' buff husband." Their favorite travel experiences have been trips on historic trains
\
After the Holiday Challenge we began our monthly show and tell--

Angie made "Summer Garden" --a gift for her niece, Laura--from Keepsake Quilting "Cotton Candy Dots" pattern.
Joan Peake made this "Basket Quilt" from a layer cake of William Morris fabric. The pattern is on the cover and in the book of "More Layer Cake, Jelly Roll, and Charm Quilts by Pam Lintott.

"What is 1,600 inches long when it starts and finishes 48" x 64"? The Jelly Roll 1,600 Quilt!"  Joan Peake made a "1600 Quilt" from a jelly roll of Kaffe Fassett fabric. She found the pattern on You Tube--check it out at www.youtube.com/watch?v=EomX7t7to_o

Sierra had a busy month!
Sierra names this "Dotty Squares"--one twin one baby!

.
Another log cabin  quilt!

Sierra made two quilts using train fabric in the center of the log cabin quilts.

Yeah another UFO finished --a lovely table runner!

Here Sierra shows her "Flower" applique with strippy borders.

Sierra used her "Dotty" fabric to make this pinwheel quilt.

Here is Sierra's "Split Rail Fence in Pink and Green."

Libby saw these toys in several Lancaster area quilt shops and she had to try making one... or some... She started one using up scraps and snippets and she now has 2 done and may do more. The "Patchwork Scottie Dog Toy" does have a great appetite for snippets!. It is made with 2 inch squares.

Gigi made "Annie's Garden" a McCall's pattern adaptation as a birthday gift for her sister. The quilting was done by Angie Miller.
The back of the quilt is as gorgeous as the front.

Janet Betz designed these delightful crib size quilts.  One having roosters and stars all around.  she thought she would never find the matching fabric to go with the roosters--but she did!

Mary Stauss brought this quilt in to show an "Ann Oliver" quilt named "Tulip Progressive." Ann did the center and the other rows were done by Pat Alfredson, Jean Humble, Joan Clemens and Tammy Mannarino. This was back in 1999. Anne donated the quilt for a silent auction and Mary bought it. Mary believes that this is Anne's first machine quilted piece.

Carolyn Paden presents her "Bargello in the Round" design by Cheryl Phillips and "Tucson Window" designed by Jenny Beyer.

Here Jim Melton shows his handiwork with the flag of Turkey, his latest tour stop from his travels.

Co-Presidents' Message

Hello, Quilters, March is a memory and April is here. If you doubt the advent of Spring, just look outside at all the blooms! We had a great program meeting last month with Laurette Koserowski's informative talk and all the goodies. The magazines/books/fabrics were a wonderful addition. What fun! I'm sure we are all are looking forward to Karen Stone's lecture and workshop. Sure to be New York Beautiful. Don't forget that the meeting dates are switched for the month of April. The program meeting will be on April 10 and the business meeting on April 24. Please make a real effort to attend the business meeting on the 24th. We will be having elections (many thanks to our nominating chair and her committee for a great slate). We will also be passing out a copy of our survey to elicit your recommendations to pass on to the new board so Mt.Vernon will head in the direction we all want to go. We'll be talking about Big QU-wide challenges for next year as well. Those who appliqué are invited to the bees to work on the border of the 2013 QU raffle quilt. Many hands make light work--I think I read that somewhere. See you soon.

Happy Quilting!

Ruth and Ro

Vice President's Message

Time flew too quickly as Laurette Koserowski captivated the audience as she spoke about quilt trends at the recent MVQU March program. Originally slated to speak about how to know when a book has the potential to be a fabulous addition to a quilter's book stash, Laurette did not reach that section of her outline. Laurette shared stories accumulated during her years as the editor of The Quilter magazine. She shared tips to submitting quilts and patterns to magazines for publication; and shared quilts that had come to her as potential submissions to the magazine. All of this lively discussion was intermittently interrupted to pull names out of the basket so that each attendee could pick up a book or bundle of fat quarters combined with the recent special publication on Scrap Quilts that Laurette provided as door prizes for the entire audience. Laurette also provided copies of The Quilter and Quilt Trends to each member at the door as they signed in. Based on the questions at the end of the program, there appeared to be great interest in the breadth of information that Laurette shared. Despite running long, and taking time to field additional questions, Laurette made it back to BWI in time to catch her 4:30 flight back to New Jersey. I certainly learned a great deal from Laurette and based on the comments received after the program, Laurette was a big hit.
April brings a switch in Business and Program meetings as MVQU is sharing Karen Stone with the Centerville quilt guild. Karen Stone will arrive on an early Tuesday morning flight, reaching MVQU in time to present her lecture on April 10 at the Hollin Hall Senior Center. The workshop is full, however if you wish you had signed up, please contact me and I’ll put you on a wait list. Be prepared for an early Wednesday morning call in case there are any no-shows for the workshop. Not likely, based on the inquiries that I’ve been receiving, but please let me know if you are interested. The workshop will commence at 9 am on Wednesday April 11 for a fun-filled “color play” day with Karen while focusing on the New York Beauty quilt project.
Our final program of the year in May, features Mike Ellingsen. If you haven’t seen it, please be sure to check out the quilt that Mike sent as an example of the quilting that you can do on your domestic machine. This queen size quilt is absolutely fabulous, and Mike promises to teach his techniques for fabulous quilting without the back, neck and shoulder pain normally associated with quilting on a domestic machine. Happy Stitching,Carol Kunkel MVQU VP/Programs

BIG QU's 40th ANNIVERSARY

1973-2013 Big QU will be celebrating its 40th Quilt Show in 2013. The name of this show will be "Fabulous at Forty." Plans are already underway to mark this special occasion. Two guild-wide challenges have been announced. One will be for more traditional quilters "Red & White and Quilted All Over." A second challenge for the non-traditional quilter is titled, "I Imagine Forty...." These quilts will need to be photographed and measured by our quilt collectors next February 2013 to be displayed in the 40th Anniversary Quilt Show. As more details become available, they will be passed along.

BIG QU WEBSITE SURVEY
Have you checked out the Big QU website recently? The Big QU Board is concerned many of our members are not using it or think it could use some improvement and updates. They want to know what we, the members, have to say about the QU website. A short survey has been developed and will be sent, online, to all members in a few weeks. Please take a few minutes to answer the questions. Big QU thanks you

Minutes of General Business Meeting on March 13, 2012

The meeting was called to order by Co-President Ruth Morgan at 12:32 p.m.
Ruth welcomed members, including Julie Blankenship, who joined today
With no corrections, the February Minutes were approved by the membership. In the absence of Secretary Jim Melton, Libby Dudley served as Acting Secretary.

VP and Program Chair Carol Kunkel reminded members of the presentation March 27 by Laurette Koserowski, editor of Quilting Magazine, who will discuss quilting trends, patterns, colors, techniques and bring along lots of giveaways. Carol is not promoting the lecture outside the guild to ensure everyone receives a gift. Karen Stone will lecture on April 10 and do her New York Beauty workshop April 11. The workshop is full, but Carol has a waiting list if space opens up. Carol displayed a quilt machine quilted by Mike Ellingsen, who lectures on May 22. She is taking registrations for his workshop on May 23 on quilting using a home sewing machine.

Treasurer Mary Mazzuchi provided the treasury balance and noted that as of today MVQU has 91 members.

Nominating Committee: Chair Libby Dudley announced the 2012-13 Slate of Candidates. Elections will take place at the April 24 Business Meeting. Nominations remain open until the elections. The Slate: President – Ruth Morgan; Co-Vice Presidents – Barbara Jones and Libby Dudley; Secretary – Dotty Eisenhour; Treasurer – Mary Downey; Nominating Chair – Patricia Bolton.

Community Outreach Committee: Chair Libby Dudley thanked Hedy Vann for lending a quilt for March display at Sherwood Regional Library and Lynn Miller for the one displayed in the Hollin Hall office. She requested quilts for coming months and for over the summer. For March, Barbara Zygiel and Libby filled the display window at Martha Washington Library on Fort Hunt Road with items lent by members. She encouraged everyone to stop by the library.

Hospitality: Chair Barbara Dove and members thanked today’s hostesses Beverly Krysa, Joan Peake and Libby Dudley for providing refreshments. She listed members who will provide hospitality coming up.

Quilt Retreat: Chair Andrea Gribble said 3-4 spots remain for the April 30, May 1 and 2 Bird-in-Hand, PA retreat. Payment is due by March 27.

MV November Auction 2012: Chair Andrea Gribble said the Auction Committee will take anything the members are willing to give and the committee is looking for additional volunteers to serve beginning immediately. Items are welcome anytime. Later in the meeting, Lynne Fishburn noted that she is doing a chocolate-themed basket and would welcome items for it. She is also collecting 2 1/2” strips for a giant pizza-sized jelly roll. There will be a basket at sign-in desk each meeting if you wish to contribute.

2012 QU Show Quilt Collector: Quilt Collector Lynne Fishburn reported that for this year’s show, 16 MV members registered 35 quilts. She reminded registrants to be sure quilts are complete with hanging sleeve, labels, carry-bag. Sleeve instructions are on the QU website and MV blogsite. If you aren’t going to be in town in May, you can give your quilts to Lynne early, however QU insurance coverage doesn’t begin until May 1, so it would be at the owner’s risk.

Bow-Tie Block and Nickel Exchanges: Co-Chair Mary Mazzuchi reported that 17 members participated in February’s oriental nickel exchange. March exchange, due the 27th, will be bright solids (not tone-on-tone). She announced at the end of the meeting that there were 16 participating. The Batik Bow-Tie Block Exchange is taking place May 8; sign up any time before then. Check the blog for details. Mary reminded members to be sure to use Kona “Black” as the background; and to wash and iron all fabrics before sewing the blocks. They should be in sets of 18.

Fabric Origami Workshop: Jill Crispino said she would be at the 3/20 bee to assist members who took the 2/7 workshop in completing their ornaments. As the workshop was free, she encouraged participants to make an ornament to contribute to MV’s Boutique at the June QU Show.

2013 QU Raffle Quilt: Pat Alfredson reported that the bias tape for appliqué has been made and Ro Coller and she will glue it to the center section and bring it to the 3/20 bee. Lots of help will be needed to applique the border and it will likely be done at the bees. Pat invited members to submit possible names for the quilt.

2012 QU Boutique Committee: Pat Alfredson, Chair of MV’s 2012 QU job, sent around sign-up sheets listing tasks the members can assist with before, during and just after the QU Show. She noted that the cashiers can sit; workers don’t. One task is filled – there are enough cars and drivers to transport all QU chapters’ collected items from storage to the show. Please volunteer for one or more of the tasks – the earlier the better!

Mount Vernon 2012 QU Boutique Participation: Co-chairs Joyce Keating and Carol Conahan displayed a variety of charming and interesting items that members could make to contribute to the chapter Boutique at the QU Show June 1, 2, and 3. They included bags using fabric and mesh, button-covered coasters and trivets, greeting cards with buttons and artwork, a sewn collar for dogs. See Joyce and Carol for instructions, if needed. Members can donate items at any time; include a slip of paper with each item stating member’s name, item name (description), suggested price, and whether item should be returned to the maker if not sold. Ro Coller volunteered to make up a form for the committee. Joyce offered a number of UFO projects that members could complete for the Boutique or Auction.

QU 2012 Show: Ruth Morgan noted that she will arrange for the same half-page MV chapter ad to be placed in the 2012 program as in recent years; the $125 cost was previously budgeted. If anyone wishes to buy an ad or knows someone who might, Ruth has the form available.

Ruth noted that QU has yet to announce an anticipated 40th anniversary challenge (see minutes of 2/14/12), but said that MV might consider doing its own red and white challenge to enter into the 2013 show.

2012 QU Show Chapter Story Boards: Jill Crispino displayed 2 MV story boards that will appear on the end of rows at the show, along with the MVQU banner. Members thanked Jill for arranging the cheerful boards. Ruth announced that the chapter can provide recruitment flyers for people to take; Libby will get them printed as part of Community Outreach work.

June Luncheon: Co-Chair Nancy Barkume said the Tuesday, June 12th event would be a potluck Tea Party with finger foods. The House quilt block pattern is on the blogsite and members can hand them in anytime or at the luncheon. Be sure that the fabric surrounding the house is some shade of blue. The blocks can be embellished if desired. Later in the meeting Ruth confirmed with the HH office that the regular meeting room would be available for the luncheon. A primary election scheduled for that day will be held in another room.

Thailand Charity Project: Angie Miller will be going to northern Thailand again this coming winter with a group she belongs to and said the children she works with have shown a particular interest in learning to do redwork embroidery. There are around 50 who might participate. If members have items they would like to contribute for her project, needed are embroidery floss (particularly red or blue), embroidery needles, small or medium hoops, scissors, pencils, instruction books or pamphlets. She can take them anytime. Fabric is already handled. She will also be taking lap and twin-sized quilts. She would welcome contributions, and if just the top is done, she will finish it.

Announcements: The McLean QU Auction will be held on Tuesday, March 27. The activities may begin at 9:30 am, though the chapter normally meets from 10 am – 12 noon. Check QU chapter website for details.

Attendance: Co-President Ruth announced that 61 members and guests attended the Jean Ann Wright program on February 28 and 34 attended the February 14 business meeting.

MV Chapter Survey/Strategic Analysis Committee: Co-President Ruth requested assistance in compiling results of the upcoming April member survey. Andrea Gribble volunteered; more volunteers welcome.

Tribute to Ann Oliver: Co-President Ro Coller read a thank you note from Ann’s daughter in response to the chapter’s condolence letter. Ro suggested a tribute display of former member Ann’s work at the June Luncheon. If members having items related to Ann’s quilt work would let Ro know, and either bring them to the June Luncheon or provide them to her ahead of time, and she will arrange the display.

Woodlawn Needlework Show Dates Changed for 2012: Kathy Zahaczewsky noted that dates for 2012 are May 12 – June 12. She has applications for submitting quilt projects, which can have a maximum circumference of 120 inches and must have handwork of some kind. The application should also be online at the Woodlawn site. Hand-in is in April. Note that the café this year is Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday only and the still delicious menu is more limited than in the past.

Door Prizes: Gigi Corbin, sitting in for Chair Ann Marlin, announced winners: new member Julie Blankenship, Barbara Jones, and Carol Kunkel.

Show and Tell: Co-President Ruth announced that members can place their work on a display table in the back of the room after their show-and-tell, so the rest of the group can have more time to enjoy their work. Today’s presentations included viewing results of the fabric acquisition trip Ro Coller conducted to a retiring-from-e-business source in Prince Frederick, MD on Saturday, March 10. Ten members participated and also enjoyed a crabcake meal on the way home. If members are interested, let Ro know, she could conduct a third trip – fabric is around $4/yd. The presentations also included several tops using Jean Ann Wright’s Circle of Nine settings from the 2/29 workshop.

Following the rest of Show and Tell, the meeting was adjourned at 2:00 pm by Co-President Ruth. Libby Dudley, Acting Secretary
