Presidents’ Message

The season of Thanks and Giving is upon us. What a wonderful opportunity we have as quilters to do both. I am always so thankful that I learned to sew at an early age (before I could read or write) and that skill has filled up many a joyful hour. MVQU has multiplied those feelings, as now I can also share this passion of quilting with my fellow members. As for the giving part, we all know how good it feels to give our quilts away and to know how much they are appreciated.

We have lots of opportunity to give this year at MVQU. After many busy bees filled with cutting, sewing, and squaring, our Quilts of Valor kits are complete. Now we need you to take home a kit, add a back, and quilt it together. These quilts are needed for all the men and women who serve our country so valiantly, and it is just one way we as quilters can show them how thankful we are for their service. Please contact Lynne Fishburn to reserve your kit lfishburn@hotmail.com

Remember to give Lynne information about any other quilt donations you make this year so that we can add it to our list for Fairfax County to keep our charitable status at Hollin Hall.

We will also be helping Fairfax County’s “Adopt a Family” program this year, and we will be asking for gift cards from our members to give to local needy families. Buy in any amount from stores like Walmart, Target, Shopper’s Food Warehouse, etc. Whatever you can give will be appreciated.

I am looking forward to our upcoming fundraiser and very thankful for all the hard work of our membership and your generous donations. Check out the slideshow on our blog to see a sampling of the beautiful things that will be sold on November 10th. Please be sure to bring a friend. There will be wonderful items to see and buy and even if they don’t quilt, there will be some finished quilts for them to purchase. Also, who doesn’t love to buy baked goods!

In spreading the word about MVQU and the wonderful world of quilting, we are in need of members willing to lend some of their beautiful quilts to hang in local libraries and at Hollin Hall. Please contact Lynn Miller philiplakier@msn.com if you have a quilt to share or know of another venue that we can use to help spread the word.

In addition, on November 18th Hollin Hall will be collecting food for needy families in the area. Please help by bringing in some canned goods the next time you come to the center and deposit them in the boxes in the entry foyer.

Thanks for all your giving.

Smiles, Bert

Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony...Ghandi

Looking for Inspiration?

MVQU Chapter Challenge 2009-2010 "Come Fly with Me"

Are your ideas taking flight, reaching new heights, soaring off into the wild blue yonder? Don't forget the deadline for this year’s Chapter Challenge "Come Fly with Me" is February 9, 2010. Your interpretation of the theme can be traditional (commercial patterns may be used if credit is given to the designer) or original in design and the maximum size is 36" x 36".

Stumped?

Playing a little word association or jotting down the answers to some very simple questions can often "jumpstart" your creativity. Ask yourself the following questions before you are embark on the making a new quilt or are faced with coming up with an idea for a new challenge.
  1. What word or words best describe or do you associate with the theme?
  2. What is the first color you think of?
  3. What is the second color that comes to mind?
  4. What emotion or feeling do the colors your chose evoke?
  5. Are you reminded of a person, a song, a food?
Sometimes the simple answers to these questions can free the mind. Don't be afraid to let your imagination be your creative ally.

Show and Tell - October 13, 2009

Gail English found this unfinished quilt in her attic. She trimmed the Grandmother’s Flower Garden edges and had it quilted for her guest bedroom.

She also made a Civil War table runner for her sister.

Ellen Patton showed us three eye catching ways to use scrap fabrics in these charity quilts she pieced for Quilts of Valor: above is Blue and White.

This is Red, White & Blue

And Red and White.

These sweet theme quilts were hand stitched by Barbara Zygiel. Above is “Betsy’s Closet” and below is “Benge’s Pockets”

Rosemary Coller, Pat Alfredson, Mary Mazzuchi , and Margaret Chandler shared fabrics they bought from the MV Quilt Retreat to make these creative “Batik Dimes” quilts. What a team

Ro's Quilt

Pat's version

Mary's Quilt

The green and cream swirls in Kay Brill’s hand stitched “Winding Ways” quilt took our breath away.

Kay also made a Bow Tie quilt for her son Jay using his old shirts and had enough leftover for a table runner.

Nancy McGlasson made this lovely “Wedding Quilt” for her Granddaughter’s wedding.

Sonia Sondol pieced this “Vintage Bow Tie” quilt.

“Quilter’s Palette” is the result of an online class that Sonia took to stretch her quilting skills…Wow!

Kathy Edwards made “Spider World” as part of her Online Yahoo Group’s Challenge to use Holiday Embellishments.

In “View from Cas Cay” Kathy Edwards used her own vacation picture for inspiration in Ellen Linder’s Design Your own Nature Quilt class—An online class offered at http://www.adventurequilter.com/.
