February 2021 Show & Tell

Ginny Mayes has a number of quilts to share.

"I have been a bit obsessed with Plus Sign quilts and decided to use some bagged fabrics to make a Plus Sign quilt.  Or two.  Or four.  I had a pattern that had a few large Plus Signs with background around them (and one plus sign in background fabric in the center), but alas, I did not have enough background fabric to do all four in the same background so I used four different solids.  The plus signs are from the same batch of fabrics but the quilts look quite a bit different just with different backgrounds. I used the same Double Bubble quilting panto on the sixteen-patch quilts."

"I had seen "low-volume" quilts on Pinterest.  Essentially, they substitute some random mix of light fabrics for a plain white background.  After I pulled my whites and off-whites, I realized that most of them were "warm" fabrics and I thought that a range of reds from pink through orange would look good with them.

Um...duh...I was making a Plus Sign quilt and had not thought about how I was basically making Red Cross quilts!  Oh well, they is what they is.

Quilting these gave me fits.  I wanted an off-white thread on top and a red on the back, and there was no way to get the tension correct.  The thread on the back just lay flat along the fabric, but at the same time, I had lots of red dots on top, so I couldn't tighten the top tension.  I have determined that my machine simply does not like the thread I used on top, so I may just have to not use it again.  I had to pick out the quilting for about a row and a half on each quilt, and then use the needle holes as the quilting lines and resew the quilting on the little sewing machine.  Whatever it takes"

"My great-nephew Tommy turned three in November.  He is nonverbal but loves trucks and trains.  One of his other great-aunts made him a beautiful Elizabeth Hartman baby quilt, so I did not send him a baby quilt.  But it is just about time for a "big boy" bed and a bigger quilt to use for making forts and tents.

At one of the Cardinal Quilters meetings, I mentioned maybe making him an I Spy.  I think Susan was working on one (or more) at the time.  Kathy Z suggested that I make all of the objects start with the first letter of his name.  Brilliant!

So I used Barbara Brackman's Tessellating T pattern and picked fabrics that showed objects that start with the letter T (although my daughter Lily claims that I cheated with "transportation" and "traffic signs").  I think I had 21 or 22 different fabrics with T things.  I had fun fussy-cutting motifs to fit into the T's, but I did NOT have fun remembering which pieces had to angle in and which had to angle out!"

"I thought you might like to see how your Christmas Tree blocks from last year's holiday luncheon raffle ended up.  I used every block that I received and only had to make maybe half a dozen more, plus the star and gifts. I quilted it in a Christmas ornament panto. "

"
When I was planning the African Queen quilts, I originally intended to have them dancing in the midst of houses, but the scale was not right and the designing got complicated so I gave up but still wanted to make the houses."

Helen Shaver has a number of quilts to show.

"The blue quilt is for Cal —-our 3 yr old grandson. Those are his baby clothes."

"The red quilt was hand pieced by our daughter, Becky. She raided my 2 inch stash-  fine by me!  It is for our granddaughter, Margaret—who took her first steps just before Christmas when she was 8 months old."

"This charity quilt (front and back) used 200 of my millions of 4 inch squares. More charity quilts utilizing my squares will be coming your way, Mary and Ginny!"

"These little quilts were made for my granddaughter (9 months old and walking). She likes to carry her blankets around, but she trips on them because she is so little.

"These two charity quilts used novelty squares I have had in my stash for years!  It’s great to be “sewing my stash”!!!!"

"All my patriotic fabric (panels and yardage) has been used in these charity quilts!  Good feeling! "

"After making the patriotic charity quilts pictured above, I still had fabric left. I made 10 inch squares with scrap muslin and used 2 1/2 strips for front.  I thought I would have to buy backing, but made use of rest of fabric instead."

Kathy Zahaczewsky has a Christmas quilt to show.

Tina Wujick has a number of projects to show.

"This is the page I’ve created for Sue Heisler, President of QU.
I’m looking for comments from everyone and any recommended changes. There is room for a personal message to her. I don’t know her well enough to add anything myself. Any thoughts?"

This is a stitched zentangle fish, 14”x 14”.

"This is an Angela Walters Build A Quilt pattern. Free motion quilted and ruler work. 84”x84”
Matching pillow."

Veronica Abrams has a number of projects to show.

"This picture is of heart shaped potholders done in an embroidery hoop on an embroidery sewing machine."

More Christmas embroidery projects

Libby Dudley has a project to share.

"Here is a photo of my latest completed work ... did this little Christmas-themed star hot pad and enjoyed having it decorate the dining table throughout the season.  Great for scraps and using my diamond template."

Sharon McAuliffe has a project to show.

"My quilt was made for a silent auction for Alternatives For Girls, a non profit in Detroit. My sister Janet volunteers at AFG teaching sewing. Janet will turn the binding."
