January Round Robin
Here are the finished products. The reveal took place at the January Show and Tell. All the participants were wowed by what the others added to their respective centers. This was indeed a fun exchange.
January Show and Tell
Bill Rice made this batik quilt containing over 310 different batiks! Wow, he was quite busy. The design is from a Gemini Pattern by Janine Burke and the quilt is named "Hummingbirds and Moose Deep in the Heart of Texas." It is a gift for his cousin.
Lucky cousin.
Jill Crispino designed and stitched by hand "David's Ties". She was cleaning out her stash cupboard and found her sons discarded silk ties. She could not resist playing with them.
Barbara Dove's Rose Delight is an original design and made for the Virginia Quilt Museum's 15th Anniversary exhibit. The exhibit will be on display at the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival--check it out!
Barbara also did this work of art--"Sunday Surprise: It also is an original design. It was made for and juried into the 2010 Hoffman Challenge. It was machine appliqued and quilted.
Jim Melton's "Cantebury Pilgrims". It is an English pictorial cotton sewn in block form. And includes Kate Middleton's wedding material which Jim purchased in his travels to the United Kingdom in 2011.
Carol Kunkel's "Bird in a Basket" was taken from Rami Kim book, "Quilting Elegance. At the 2010 Hampton quilt show, Aby Dolinger provided each of the American Sampler's group with a fat quarter of the bird fabric, which came from Ikea. The challenge was to create a project with the fabric. This was not a fabric she would have chosen, but it grew on her. Carol wanted to find just the right pattern to show off these cute birds. She started looking for greens to go in the quilt. After about a year of looking, I woke up one Saturday morning in time for the Fons & Porters show on PBS. A lady was demonstrating a quilt technique using Rami Kims' woven technique. She knew right away that these birds need their own woven trellis. She found Rami's book and found this quilt variation, which suited the fabric better than the same shown on the show. The search for appropriate greens intensified. It took about a year to find the right greens. Rami's original quilt is a two sided quilt and Carol started hers that way, but decided to use the left over strips for the back rather than doing a two sided quilt, as shown. So the back is made up of the leftovers from the woven process.
Pat Alfredson's "Celtic Knots" is from a Celtic Quilt design by Philomena Wiechec. She used up leftovers on this quilt and thought it was good practice for Celtic Knots. Pat will be ready for the quilt raffle Celtic knots.
Here is the "Quilt from Hell" This was a challenge/quilt square and was too large for the challenge but when a friend saw it she said this was what quilters in hell had to do.
This top was given to Sierra Smith by her children's speech team coach. He had it in his attic and after watching Sierra quilt on many team trips, he gave it to her.
Sierra Smith made this quilt as part of a KHQS Challenge block. She did not have the winning block, but won some blocks and fabric in drawing.
Lynn Eccleston's "Purple Magic" was a Bethany Reynold's Stack and Whack Design.

Disappearing 4- Patch
The Disappearing 4-Patch or 4 to 9-Patch starts with a 4-patch block with good contrast in colors or shades and tones. The one below was made with 5-inch squares and it will finish to an 8.5-inch block from raw edge to raw edge if accurate scant 1/4-inch seams are used.

Next, make 4 cuts without moving the block or the cut pieces. Use a small mat so you can turn the block without disturbing it. Using the center seams as the reference point, measure out 1 inch and make a cut (1 ½ inches looks good too); then make a cut on the other side of the seam. Rotate and repeat, measuring 1 inch from the center seam for each cut.

H
i, Quilters,Hope everyone had a great holiday and you are all looking forward to 2012.
Wow! Remember when most of us were kids and 2000 seemed so far away?
Ruth and I wish you a Happy New Year and are looking forward to all our programs and workshops for the new year. This month we will welcome Bunnie Jordan and her informative program and trunk show. There is still time to sign up for her workshop, too.
We still need someone to chair the Boutique for the quilt show in June. Ruth and I have been attending the monthly meetings and would be willing to continue. Think about chairing this event--we will be asking in person soon. If we are going to participate in the Boutique, we will need someone to shepherd Mt. Vernon's items as well. Think about giving back to Mt. Vernon in terms and time and talent. We had such great participation in the Auction--donations, buyers, bidders, etc., and that's what made it such a great success.
Our collectors will be informing us soon about registering our quilts for the June show. Get those bindings and sleeves on your quilts so you will be ready.
Thanks to Tammy and Anne for organizing a wonderful holiday luncheon. As usual the food was great and a good time was had by all. The UFO exchange was a hoot.
See you at the business meeting on January 10th.-----------------Ro and Ruth
Vice-President's Message

Greetings --
With January comes the beginning of our 2012 MVQU programs lineup! Our January program launches the season with Bunnie Jordan. Bunnie says, on her website...
Quilting is an important part of my life. Whether studying old quilts or making new ones, I’m guaranteed a learning experience, an exchange with friends, and satisfying that need to just touch fabric and see what it can become. I feel fortunate to have found an interest and passion that gives back on so many levels. I am a quilt-maker, quilt author, quilt collector, and quilt teacher. I am also an appraiser, accredited member of the American Society of Appraisers, specializing in quilts and textiles. Bunnie will be our guest lecturer on January 24, sharing and discussing her Civil War trunk show. Bunnie will meet with us again on Wed., January 25 at the Mt.Vernon Government center from 9 am through noon to show more of her fabulous quilt collection, discussing the fabrics, colors, dyes, time periods and other fascinating information found in quilts of old. Each workshop participant can bring a quilt treasure, old or new, to share with the group. Bunnie will help you discover the hidden story of your quilt. This is not an appraisal, just a journey to your quilt. As quilters, we are filled with the love of quilting. Many of our quilts, whether planned as an heirloom or not, will survive to warm the hearts of future generations. As I have dabbled in quilt history, that journey has bolstered and deepened my love of quilting. Please come join Bunnie for a little quilt history at the workshop (and you will get to fondle some fabulous old quilts!)
I have several updates about other 2012 MVQU programs which I will share at the January business meeting. Until then, hope you had a wonderful holiday filled with family, fun and loads of food... and maybe time to take a few stitches! -----Carol Kunkel
NOMINATING COMMITTEE
COMMUNITY OUTREACH
We also completed 51 backpacks for hospitalized children, which will be delivered to the Northern Virginia Student Nurses Association for distribution in January. They were very appreciative of our donation.
Speaking of charity donations, our next 5th Tuesday charity quilt session will be held on January 31, in the main meeting room, from 11:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. We'll plan on making the disappearing four patch block. The pattern for this block is found under BOM as Disappearing 4 Patch. This block starts with a four patch block, and with just a few cuts and a few new seams, it becomes and easily sewn but complicated looking block. We will use 2 pairs of 5" blocks for our four patch blocks. If you don't have other plans for the packets of 5" squares from Timeless Treasures DOTTY collection that Ruth passed out at our first business meeting, this would be the perfect project. The DOTTY squares should be paired with white (or a white on white print that reads as white). I have 10 sets of 5" squares available for sewers who come to our 5th Tuesday charity quilt session on January 31. I'll send an email after our next business meeting with the details for January 31, or MVQU members are welcome to contact me by phone (703-659-5050) or email philiplakier@msn.com if they want to get a head start on the project----Lynn Miller

WHAT TO REMEMBER--
FEBRUARY LECTURE AND WORKSHOP WITH JEAN ANN WRIGHT
In February, our guest lecturer will be Jean Ann Wright, a quilt magazine editor. Visit her website at www.jeanannquilts.com
HOLIDAY CHALLENGE
We begin the new year with our holiday challenge in full swing. Please remember to bring your completed projects to the February business meeting for show and tell and we hope you
will enter them in the quilt show. Just a reminder: they represent your favorite federal or religious holiday or a vacation holiday that is meaningful for you.
NICKEL FABRIC EXCHANGE
We had 29 people participate in the black and white nickel fabric exchange and we received some beautiful fabrics. The theme for January is red and white. The fabrics can be red or white solids or fabrics that read like solid or red and white prints. Sign up for the January exchange at the January business meeting or let Pat Alfredson or Mary Mazzuchi know before the meeting that you want to participate and how many sets you want to submit. The squares must be turned in at or before the program meeting on January 24. Keep in mind the theme for the 2013 quilt show, which is our 40th (ruby) anniversary, is red & white.
ROUND ROBIN
The round robin is coming to an end and we have had so much fun working on the projects. Please bring your completed top to the January business meeting for show and tell.
2013 QU RAFFLE QUILT
Work is continuing on the auction quilt. Several members gathered at the senior center November 29th to lay out the design. Considering the number of squares we were working with ( approximately 250) it was a somewhat daunting task but fun to watch as well as participate in. After several hours of “try this here”, “move that there”, “oh that doesn’t go”, “too many purples”, “perfect”; we came to a consensus and Mary Downey graciously took them to put together …we are all very grateful she volunteered to undertake this huge project.
THE 2012 QU QUILT SHOW REGISTRATION PROCESS
http://www.qushowentry.com
Registration Begins January 1, 2012 and Ends February 27, 2012
Who can register a quilt?
Any QU member in good standing may enter up to six quilts in the QU Quilt Show June 1-3,2012. If you belong to more than one chapter you must register under the chapter who holds your main membership not your associate membership. This is not a competition or a juried exhibit; it is an opportunity to show your fabulous quilts to a very appreciative audience.
Why do we need to register online?
Having all the information online ensures that all information is correct, entered in the right place and can be used simultaneously by all the different show committees. This registration system greatly improves the process of letting a quilt through the entire line-up of committees and hanging in the desired location correctly.
How do I enter a quilt?
*Simply go to http://www.qushowentry.com/ and follow the instructions on the screen. It is very
straightforward and easy process. It is best to have all your information ready before you start the registration process.
*If you do not have a computer you can fill out a paper form, bring it to us and we’ll register your quilt for you. We will have some blank paper forms available at the meetings. This process is much simpler than it seems and you will be surprised at how well you fare on your own.
Any helpful hints?
- Have all of your information gathered in one place before beginning, including your personal contact info, the name of the designer or pattern, name of the challenge or names of other quilters who worked on the quilt.
- Decide in advance the priority numbers for your quilts. Register them in order from one
to six. This is important in case some quilts have to be eliminated due to the number of registrations received. - The maximum dimension of any quilt cannot exceed 115” x 115”. The final dimension will
be determined when you bring your quilt to be measured and photographed by the
quilt collectors. You will not input the dimensions of your quilt during the registration process. - You must register all of your quilts at the same time. If you finish the registration process and realize you have forgotten to enter a quilt please contact your quilt collector for instructions.
- Once you fill out all the information, hit the “submit” button in order to finish the process. Once it has been entered, you will not be able to edit the entry. If you realize there has been a mistake contact your quilt collector and they can make a correction for you.
- The online system will assign a number for each quilt artist and each quilt, you do not have to remember these numbers but you DO need to print out the confirmation page you receive at the end of the online registration which will have this information. You should also receive an email from the system with this information.
- Each challenge entry must have the same “standard/official” name listed or they will not hang together. MVQU’s challenge titles are A Walk on the Wild Side and Your Favorite Holiday.
- All fields must be completed on the forms even if your name is the answer for several of the fields.
- In the Description area you are allowed 350 characters only, and spaces count as characters, to describe your quilt and tell its story.
What needs to happen after you register on-line?
Print out the confirmation page and bring it with your “show ready” quilt to us on the dates listed below. Each quilt must be measured and photographed. We will enter this information online.
What is a “show ready” quilt?
A quilt that is completely finished, has a hanging sleeve at least 4 inches deep, has a label with the quilters name/chapter/quilt name/telephone number sewn on the bottom right corner of the back of the quilt and each quilt must arrive in a fabric carrying sack with the same information listed above (plastic bags of any kind are unacceptable).
Since registration can detract from our regular meetings we will be available one hour before and after the Business and Program meetings. On Bee days we will be available from 12:30 to 2:30.If you cannot attend one of the following dates, then contact us to make arrangements. You may ask a friend to bring your quilt for measuring and photos if you cannot come to one of the dates listed (be sure your friend has a copy of your confirmation page).
Dates:
January 10th Business Meeting
January 17th Bee
January 24th Program Meeting
February 14th Business Meeting
February 21st Bee
February 28th Program Meeting
What is the deadline?
The last day you can register you quilt online is February 27th. The last day you can have your quilt measured and photographed is February 28th. These two dates are not negotiable.

Gigi named this quilt "Red Velvet Cake". It is a gift for her sister-in-law. The pattern comes from Fons & Porter and it was quilted by Angie Miller.
Lynne Fishburn made these two quilts in memory of her brother-in-law Dave Norman from his African shirts for his family. One is "Scrappy Rectangles" and the other is "Scrappy Zig Zag."
Nancy Barkume made this quilt as a Christmas quilt for her daughter. She used batik fabrics from a 6" batik fabric exchange at the Hayfield Quilters a couple of years ago.
Carol Conahan made "Santa's Midnight Runner" from a Mount Redoubt design. She made it seven years ago. It is blue in keeping with this year's color theme for the Christmas luncheon.
Carol also made "The Fetterman Kids" which she designed herself. She made four of these little picture quilts for her two nieces and nephew and their father(her brother.) The picture was taken in 1975--a great Hallmark card!
Ruth Morgan made this quilt from a pattern for 2 1/2" strips. She will be enjoying this quilt this holiday season at her river house.
