MVQU - Show and Tell - February 8, 2011

Marian Schwartz brought her "Desert Paprika." The quilt was paper pieced from a kit purchased at the Sisters, Oregon show in 2008.

Joyce Keating showed her "Soldier Quilt" which was quilted by Angie Miller.

Barbara Zygiel treated us to "Birthday Baby Quilt" which she created for a new nephew who is expected to arrive in June.

Pat Alfredson created China Doll and

"Bull's Eyes"

New member T. Carter brought "Grandma's House" which is based on her Grandma's house, a 1901 homestead in Mt. Lake, Minnesota. (Just in case anyone thinks the rooster in the left foreground is a bit out of scale, T explained that the family always talked about the rooster as if it was larger than life - so she made it larger than life.)

This is the back of T's quilt

Libby Dudley displayed "Julia's Quilt" which was created using fabrics won at the drawing during the 2009 MVQU challenge reveal. The quilt was made for her 17 year old neice in California.

Libby's second quilt was "Sunrise Surprise". The quilt was created from 1950's and early 1960's scraps and Roman Stripe strips found in a shoebox bought at the October 2010 auction. This quilt used only half of the scraps - so - watch for more to come.

Finally after two large quilts Libby decided to downsize and do a fun Valentine quilt for a doorknob decoration for the front door. She now thinks it will be displayed in her kitchen since it just might disappear from the front door.

Mary Mazzuchi brought "Jeff's Tee Shirt Quilt" which she created for a friend using his Harley Davidson tee shirts.

And last - but definitely no least - we have Sienna Smith's "Churn Dashabout". A group of quilts featuring churn dash blocks in various settings.

2010-2011 Challenge Quilts

The great reveal of the challenge quilts lived up to all expectations. MVQU members showed their ingenuity as well as their quilting talents. The only disappointment was that so few members participated.

Suzanne Shaw's challenge quilt is entitled “Time to move your body.” It is a photo display of varies activities she loves to do with family and friends. She has a photos of her 12 person Ragnar relay team, she and her son skiing and herself running in a marathon, sailing with her husband, and with her sister volunteering at a 5k event which they also participated in. Suzanne used many novelty prints and the 2 clock hands became ski poles.

Kathy Z created her "Christmas Time" which included redwork blocks featuring Christmas songs that included measures of time.

This quilt created by Diane Tippins consists of 12 strips of fabric in the center which represent 12 stages of her life.

Dottie Eisenhour's quilt "Anytime is a Good Time for Kaffe" was created with Kaffe fabrics.

Sierra Smith brought her creation "Time Flies" which she made it to hold her husband's airplane pins.
Libby introduced us to the "Techno Goth Time Traveler." The quilt shows Techno Goth butterfly blasting back from 2010 to meet his great grandmama in 1950.

Angie Miller called her entry "Divine Sunshine" for her daughter Deanna, who just knew the guidelines were meant for her. 12 Hour Glass blocks surround appliqued Roman Numerals for her birthdate Dec 12, 2012 when she will turn 24. The sun and moon represent her name and time of birth with clock hands set at 11:09pm. They designed the quilt top together and Angie wrote the poem (below)
Barbara Dove created the "Biological Clock". The rabbit, clock with children's faces, and hands approaching midnight symbolize a biological clock.

Beth Smith exhibited her "Time is Running Out." The quilt was designed, made, and quilted by Beth.

President's Message

Yesterday we had our first program for the New Year. We had a wonderful turnout from our membership as well as many guests to hear Diane Herbort speak and to see her work. We also had a surprise visit from Kath Heslep, this year’s President of Big QU, as well as a reporter, Liz Meyer, from forthuntpatch.com.

At our March Business Meeting you will get to see this year’s raffle quilt made by the members of the Reston Chapter. The Reston Chapter will be displaying the raffle quilt at the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival XXII in Hampton, VA February 24-27, 2011. If you plan to attend this show, please consider giving an hour of your time. To be able to display the raffle quilt at this well attended show, QU needs to provide 32 white glove hours. If you are able to lend a hand please contact Robyn Kampf at rhkampf@gmail.com.

Registration is open for classes held at the quilt show. Registration is not restricted to QU members, so I urge you to go online and take a look at the class offerings and get your registration in early. This is also the time to register your own quilt for display at the show. This year registration is done online prior to bringing your quilt in to our quilt collector for measuring and photographing. Registration will end February 21st. If you have any questions or problems with the online registration, please contact our quilt collector, Patricia Bolton at 703-347-6822 or patricia4207@gmail.com.

Over the past few weeks I’ve had several inquiries from our members about what do you get from your dues. As you know we are not an autonomous guild. We are a chapter of Quilters Unlimited. Our dues are very reasonable, $20 for regular membership, $10 for those over 65 and $00 for those over 75. Half of what we collect for dues is remitted to Big QU. Big QU provides many services to the chapters. We have liability insurance; we receive our 501(c)(3) tax-exempt designation and the related annual tax return. We have a directory published and mailed to each member. We have a website that helps us stay connected to the other chapters as well as helps people to find us. We can attend lectures given at the other chapters. We have a fall and spring lecture event that is free to members. We have a Quilt-In every year. With membership comes responsibility. As a chapter we have a Quilt Show Job as well as a QU Event to manage. Each of these responsibilities changes every year. These responsibilities are not negotiable. Our fellow chapters are counting on us to do our job just as we count on them to do their assignment.

At the chapter level your membership dues for the most part cover administrative expenses, i.e. room rent, postage, checks etc. The funding for lectures/programs comes from fundraising. Our main fundraising comes from our annual auction/bake sale. Our other opportunity for fundraising comes from participating in the Boutique at the Quilt Show. At the chapter level your membership comes with responsibility too. Taking a turn at leadership, chairing a committee, taking responsibility for a Big QU job, participating in fundraising and most important if you’re not in a leadership position, support those who do lead. Lend a hand when a committee chair asks for help. If you see something that needs improvement, offer a solution, not a complaint. If I may borrow from JFK, ask not what your guild can do for you, but what can you do for your guild. With that being said, this is the time of year when our Nominating Chair, Anne Poulin, begins her work of putting together a proposed slate of officers for next year. If you would like to serve in any capacity as an officer or committee chair let Anne know. If Anne calls you, take time to consider your answer. Speak to those who are doing the job now or have done so in the past before you decide yes or no. Maybe you’d like to partner with a friend at Mt. Vernon to share a job – let Anne know. All of us working together, means no job is a burden and all things are possible.

Lynne

THANK YOU FROM THE AKHAS – by Angie Miller

Once again the Ladies of Mount Vernon QU provided lovely quilts for graduating Akha teens of Northern Thailand. There were six recipients this year. Those who received quilts were: Ampai Ahjaw, Hareathai Bechikul, Jintara Mayer, Ahtid Laecher, Somsit Muilae, and Tidchanan Pakonisisaleul, who received a quilt kit. Tidchanan is a graduate who attends University classes in fabric design and loves to sew.

The Flower Appliqué class attracted 25 young ladies. Some of the girls I remembered from the last visit, but there were several new girls at the Hostel this year. It was a bit overwhelming at first. However, after learning Thai words for stem, leaf and petal, and the metric system numbers, we got along just fine. There were two classes; one for the stems, and again a few days later for leaves and flower petals. Most were challenged by the needle-turn method, but really got the hang of it as they stitched. We discussed possible future projects. The girls asked questions about MVQU too. They were impressed to find out many American women know how to sew! We settled on embroidery with Red Work for the next visit. Please view the pictures to see their handwork.

As the students say in Thai, “Khawp Khun Kha”…Thank You for the appliqué supplies and “Suay Mai”…So Beautiful are the quilts!

February 22 Lecture I Quilt, There, I Am with Laura Wasilowski

In February, our guest lecturer will be Laura Wasilowski. Laura is a textile artist, author, teacher and creator of hand-dyed fabrics and threads. She combines vivid fabrics and whimsical stories to make pictorial art quilts. Visit her website at www.artfabrik.com.

March 19, 2011 12:30-5:00 pm - Annual QU Quilt-In

“A CELEBRATION OF FRIENDSHIP!”

Mt. Vernon is this year’s host for the annual Quilt In. Anne Poulin has taken the lead for this event. As the date draws near Anne will let us know where she needs help. So, save the date. Many hands will be needed for set-up at 11 am and take down at 5 pm, as well as throughout the afternoon.

We will continue the tradition of a block exchange. This year’s block exchange is the Friendship Star. For the star, use any scraps of your choice. For the background, use any off-white that reads as a solid. Make one or more blocks for the exchange! The more you make, the greater the chance of you winning a selection of blocks to take home! Go to http://www.quilterscache.com/F/FriendshipStarBlock.html and follow the free directions for the traditional 12” Friendship Star.

Plan to participate in show-n-tell! Share quilts you have that tell the story of your friendships – a progressive or round-robin, block exchange, memory or signature quilt, or a gift to or from a friend.

For refreshments, please bring an appetizer or dessert to share. Food should be in a container of your choice, cut for individual servings. Please provide any serving utensil you may require. Cutlery, paper products, and bottled water will be provided.

Quilt Exhibit at Life with Cancer Family Center – by Kathy Edwards

Just before Christmas you will remember that Agnes put a message out from Big QU asking for quilts from members to hang at the Dewberry Life with Cancer Family Center. Quilts were needed quickly as the exhibit runs during the months of January and February.

I gave some thought to gathering some of my art quilts for submission, but with the holidays fast approaching, I just didn’t think I had enough time to do that. A friend encouraged me to think about it again and I did. So I quickly went through my electronic photo albums of my quilts and came up with a handful of pictures to send to the exhibit organizers. They said I wasn’t too late and to go ahead and submit the pictures. I sent them 11 pictures.

I waited anxiously over the holidays while the organizers deliberated on the quilt pictures they received. Some of my quilts still needed labels and hanging sleeves as I am not real good at doing that when I finish a quilt. I’ve begun using the hanging triangles instead of sleeves since they are easier and quicker to do and are finished after the binding is sewn down. If those quilts were selected, I needed to make those sleeves and get them on. On New Year’s Eve, I received an email saying that five of my quilts were selected for the exhibit. And, yes, some of those were ones that required sleeves and labels. And the exhibitors wanted a bio, asking price, and artist statements for each quilt and all of that needed to fit on ONE typed page. I gathered that information quickly on January 1 and submitted it before setting off to visit relatives.

Monday morning I was off to Home Depot as the quilts needed to have wood slats in the sleeves with screw holes installed so the quilts could be hung with wire. Those exhibit organizers know what they are doing and the hanging of the quilts went quickly since everyone did that. I took my quilts over to the Dewberry Center on Friday, January 7. It was obvious they could use some additional help to hang the quilts so I stayed and did that. It was a very humbling, yet rewarding experience. My quilts are hanging with well-known local area quilt artists. It also gave me a good feeling that maybe seeing these beautiful quilts on the walls will put a smile on the face of at least one person who is living with cancer. That will make the rush and trouble of readying my quilts during a busy holiday season worth the effort.

The exhibit runs from January 9 to February 28 and is open to the public from 10:30 am. to 5:00 pm and it is FREE. The address for the Life with Cancer Family Center is 8411 Pennell Street, Fairfax, VA, and it is off Route 50 near Fairfax Inova Hospital. A number of QU Quilt Artist’s quilts (see the QU Digest, January 5, 2010 QU Digest for all of the names) are in this exhibit and I encourage everyone to go see it. It is quite amazing what artistic talent lies in the membership of Quilters Unlimited. Ooops, almost forgot….Many of these quilts are for sale. Twenty percent of the proceeds go back to the Living with Cancer Center.

Here are some of the lessons I learned:
  • Take pictures of your quilts.
  • Make hanging sleeves and put them on your quilts.
  • Make labels for all of your quilts.
  • Don’t think you’re not good enough to enter these exhibits. Someone out there will like your quilt.
  • Take advantage of exhibiting in free exhibits. You never know who will see your quilts and want more of them.
  • Get permission from the designer to display or photograph your quilt when you are finished with it and keep that information in a safe place where you can find it when you need it.
Upcoming Area Shows, Exhibits, and More
  • January 7 – February 25, 2001 – Quilt Exhibit at Dewberry Life with Cancer Family Center, 8411 Pennell Street, Fairfax, VA Peggy Knight of McLean QU wrote: "QU Members and friends will have more than forty quilts on display at The Dewberry Life with Cancer Family Center from January 7 through February 25. Sandi Goldman (McL), Donna DeSoto (F, B) and Peggy Knight (McL) have organized the quilt exhibit. You are invited and encouraged to visit this exhibit; please also tell your family and friends they are welcome anytime the center is open Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. -5:30 p.m. We are so grateful for this opportunity to show this wonderful artwork, to help spread the word about the Dewberry Life With Cancer Family Center and all of the wonderful services they offer, and to bring cheer to those who come to the Center for cancer-related services."

Mt Vernon QU Minutes of Business Meeting January 11, 2011

The meeting was called to order by President Lynne Fishburn at 12:30 PM. Lynne welcomed everyone and reminded them to sign-in out front as well as at our table. She also recognized visitor Ruth Morgan from Old Town, Alexandria.

Approval of Minutes
The first order of business was to approve the November minutes. There were no additions or corrections so they were approved.

Fundraising – Rosemary Coller reported that lower priced items sold better at the Quilt Show Boutique. It is time to be thinking of items to sell, to begin making them and to limit the number of any one item to about five (5).
Quilt Collector – Patricia Bolton provided details on the new online process to register quilts for the quilt show. Register online at the Big QU website (on our Blog) and choose the Quilt Show tab. Vernon will advertise the same ½ page ad as last year. Forms are available at the table or on Big QU website. Eleanor Burns tickets are now $20 and ticket sales are open to the public. Class registration will begin January 1, 2011 and forms are available on the website. Reston QU has put out a request that QU members attending the Hampton Show assist at the raffle table for this year’s spectacular quilt. Please let Lynne know if you are able to help. Catherine needs help with the final phase of this project. Please contact her to lend a hand.
Blog/Newsletter – Agnes Purcell mentioned that for the first time our Blog received a spam message, which means one of our members may have had their email hijacked. Please check your email for safety. Article deadline is February 1st, submitting them early helps. Please send to mvqu.news@gmail.com.

Big QU Quilt Show Updates - February

38th Annual Quilters Unlimited Quilt Show - 3 – 5 June, 2011
Dulles Expo Center South Building

Notes from the Quilt Show Chairman

I’m sure you all are well into your quilt registration. For those of you that haven’t taken the opportunity to register please do so. You can submit up to six quilts. We want to see your American Beauties in the show. I know I’m looking forward to purchasing the quilt show CD. This will allow you the opportunity to review our beautiful show quilts at home in your “jammies.” Be sure and order your CDs at the show.

Hopefully, when you have gone online, you have seen the photo of our quilt show pin. I’m sure that each and every one of you will want one of our beautiful show pins. The photo doesn’t do it justice. If you would like to pre-order the pin, please contact Sanda Rees. She will make arrangements for you to pick up your pin at your next chapter meeting.

I’m sure that each and every one of you has started registering for classes. We have a wonderful array of classes available. Please be sure and get your class registration forms in as soon as possible. We are offering classes that go from basic to advanced quilting techniques. We have provided not only the listing of our classes but also photos of the class projects and supply listings. You may have noticed that we are still missing photos for some of our classes. Photos are forthcoming so please keep reviewing the website.

Remember to sign up for our key note speaker’s lecture with Eleanor Burns. Eleanor has a separate registration form also located under educational opportunities. Eleanor is both an informative and humorous lecturer. We hope that you will take this opportunity to come to the lecture and bring a friend or two. You never know, you might just get someone “hooked” on quilting. Eileen and her crew have already started going to various chapters to afford you the opportunity to register for classes. I encourage you to take the opportunity to register.

Maureen Gray, our volunteer coordinator, will be coming to your chapter within the next few weeks for volunteer sign-up. Please sign up. We need your help. Volunteers are needed in set up (Thursday), Saturday for hosting, vendor tender, ticket sales, wrist bands, floater and take down on Sunday afternoon. Please contact her at david.gray48@verizon.net. Please provide your name, chapter telephone number, job request and shift or call 703-503-8162. Shifts on Friday and Saturday run 9:45 – 12:45; 12:30 – 3:30; 3:15 – 6:00. On Sunday the shifts are 10:45 – 1:45 and 1:30 – 4:15. We really need your help. We need 300 volunteers; please make yourself one of them. Remember: This is YOUR quilt show.

Advertising is moving right along. We have numerous advertisers already committed to ads in our program. Please remember we need you to encourage business owners to advertise. We need the advertising income to pay for our programs. So please direct people to our website for advertising information or better yet provide them with a copy of the pricing sheet. Advertising in our program also affords you the opportunity to advertise your business. We offer discounted pricing for QU members. Please contact Linda Roberts if you have any questions.

As you saw in last month’s article, publicity has been hard at work getting our quilt show publicized in most of the national newsletters and magazines, as well as sending flyers to our vendors, corporate sponsors, quilt shops, guilds and taking flyers to other quilt shows. If you are attending a quilt show please contact Virginia Hodge at Restonqu@gmail.com. Virginia will be able to provide you with flyers to take to the shows you are attending. When you go on bus trips or road trips please be sure and take our flyers to the quilt shops you plan to visit. We need YOU to help promote YOUR SHOW. I know you are proud of your quilt show and want
others to come and view your beautiful quilts. I’ve gone to numerous shows and have overheard ladies talk about the QU show.

Many have said that our quilts are some of the best they’ve seen, not just at a guild show but equal to any juried quilt show they have attended.

Hopefully, you are taking advantage of your quilt collector’s help. She is fully trained to help you with any problems you might experience during registration. For those of you without computer access, your collector may submit registration for you. I know that each chapter is in the midst of measuring and photographing your quilts. Remember our collectors must have their information in to our layout and design Chairman NLT February 21st. Check your chapter’s quilt collector for your chapter’s schedule for registration/measurement and photographing of quilts.

I’m sure you are looking forward to the show. Please remember to bring friends, neighbors and family members. I’m sure they want
to see YOUR quilt hanging in the show.

So see you at the show!! REMEMBER THIS IS YOUR QUILT SHOW!!!!

Gayle Hindle
Quilt Show Committee Chair
