Swirling  Fan Centrifuge
Dianne S. Hire
3 hr. workshop v Intermediate
FYI
Windmill:  The swirling “fans” (poppers) are 4 different lilacs. For centers, 4 shades of yellow are used vs. B&W as in your Supply List.
Quilt:  Curvy Sunblaze ©2006 is the cover Vivacious Curvy Quilts

Description:  Create a 1-block Swirling Fan Centrifuge, made from a set of squared-up and inset CURVIES, intuitively created and template-free.  A fun technique and best yet:  no more fear of sewing curves! Never-you-mind knowing which is “concave or convex”.  For the 3-hour workshop, create a wall hanging made of 4 small units.  If you wish to begin a larger 6-block quilt, you may but will complete the blocks at home; and, if you’d like to see a quilt of 6-blocks, email and ask for a jpg.  Get ready to love curvies.

FYI: book, Vivacious Curvy Quilts, optional.  If you already own a copy, please bring (for personalization).  I will have copies available in class, should you wish to purchase.

Focus:  Design, Technique, Intuitive Color, Project

Charity Workshop

      Charity Workshop – September 30, 2014

Our first charity workshop of the year will be held Tuesday, Sept. 30, at Hollin Hall Senior Center in our main floor meeting room from 11 a.m. till 3:30 p.m.  All MVQU members are welcome to attend, whether or not you are working on a charity quilt.  Our charity efforts this year will feature either fat quarters or pre-printed panels.  The first pattern I have found for us is a free pattern available from the Fat Quarter Shop website ( http://www.fatquartershop.com/free-quilt-patterns) and is called Fat Quarter Fizz.  The pattern is attached, or from the parent site above, and also available directly at:

A YouTube video tutorial for how to do the pattern  is at:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6bNFkjKJKrU&feature=youtu.be  .   The pattern is available in multiple sizes, and I would recommend either the crib quilt (36 1/2" square; requires 6 fat quarters) or the small lap quilt (48 1/2" x 54 1/2"; requires 12 fat quarters).

If you prefer to use a pre-printed panel, feel free to come with your quilt sandwich made, and practice machine quilting.  The guild will provide an ironing board and iron.  Please bring your own project and supplies to work on, as well as a bag lunch.  We look forward to seeing everyone, and an enjoyable day of stitching together.

2014 Vintage Block Challenge Update!
Many of you joined the Vintage Block Challenge back in April.  I am extending the end date of our challenge so that everyone can finish up their projects. If any brave souls want to join in September, they can!  The new date for completion is the business meeting on October 14th.  For this challenge, we provide(d) you with a vintage quilt block which you will transform into your own piece of work.  Of course there are rules!  Please see the attachment for details.  I will be at the September Business meeting to answer any questions and provide challenge blocks for any fast-working inspired quilters!

2014 Vintage Block Challenge Rules

The Challenge starts today, April 8, 2014 and ends at the first business meeting in October.
·        Quilters may start late (as long as blocks remain).
·        If you decide not to complete the challenge,  your block must be returned as soon as possible, so that others may participate.
·        Each participant will receive one vintage block.
·        This block must be used in its entirety on the front of the quilt, but the block does NOT have to remain intact.
·        It would be helpful if participants would take a photo of their block before beginning on the project (for before and after comparison).
·        The finished quilt may be any size as long as it is within the limits for our Quilt Show
·        Participants are highly encouraged to display their completed quilts in the 2015 QU Show.
·        Participants should provide their name and e-mail address in order to receive reminders and/or rule clarifications.
·        Please address any questions to Tammy Mannarino
