Treasurer—Mary Downey
Nominating Chair— Patricia Bolton
Newsletter—Lynne Fishburn

President’s Message

January is a time when many of us come up with resolutions for the year ahead. We promise to eat less, exercise more and create more time for our hobby, quilting!  After years of makings these lists, I have to admit I rarely stick to the plan for more than a couple of months.

I am going to start by working on my dream sewing world.  You know that special space where seams are always ¼ inch, blocks are always square and borders are always straight...hmm.  And a sewing space where everything is in its place and I know where that place is...hmm... and what about that space with fewer UFOs …hmm, hmm?
Equally important for me is a plan for learning new skills.  At our Fall Auction, I bought appliqué lessons.  I have also signed up for several of Mt. Vernon’s spring workshops.  New skills and new techniques will allow my creativity to soar! That is part of my plan for the New Year!

Also, on my New Year’s list, are things I want to do in the coming months.  Mt. Vernon has plans for some fun activities in 2013.  In addition to our monthly programs and workshops, a quilt retreat, luncheon, summer event and the PA Quilt Show are all on the horizon.

I hope you make a list of your own quilting resolutions for the New Year and we all can stick to the plan!

Ruth Morgan

January 2013 Co-VP Letter from Barbara and Libby

Virginia Winter 2013 – A time to relish your 2012 completions and to savor and use the wonderful fabrics, notions, ideas, and machines that came your way last year.  OK, so some UFOs didn’t disappear on the stroke of 2013; there’s plenty of indoor time now.  You might have gained some inspiration from Mary Kerr’s wonderful holiday luncheon presentation.  Her message: there are fun ways to give homes to vintage blocks, family memorabilia, and even UFOs.

There are more inspiring presentations ahead.  January 22’s program features a trunk show by well-known art and landscape quilter Eileen Doughty of Vienna.  At the January 23 workshop, Eileen will teach some basic art quilt techniques (“Cherry Blossom Time Postcard Quilt”).  In February, art quilter and QU-Digest editor Cindy Grisdela will visit us on the 26th for a trunk show overview of her progression from traditional to art quilter, and on the 27th, Ro Coller and Lynn Eccleston will do a member workshop on Tessellation Techniques.  March brings Quilters Hall of Fame honoree Georgia Bonesteel of North Carolina for a program and workshop; April is MVQU’s Virtual Day at the Beach (more about that later), and, in May, Karen Combs of Tennessee will visit for a program and workshop.  As we begin January, all the workshops have space and are now open to all those interested, both in and outside of MVQU.  Profiles and workshop details are under the “Descriptions” button at right, as is the “Registration Form”.  Turning to intentions for 2013, ours is to continue offering you opportunities to learn new skills and occasions to visit with some of the best in the field.  We appreciate the enthusiasm you have shown for the programs and workshops so far this chapter year, and we wish you all a 2013 quilting year filled with creative satisfaction, happy discoveries, and friendship.

Help Us Plan for 2013

Now that 2013 is here, I thought I’d ask all of you what you would like to see Mt. Vernon offer in our coming program year.  In just a few months, planning will start for another season.  SO WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE?  Your suggestions will be helpful!   So, please when you have an idea or suggestion, send me an email, call me, or hand me a note at our meetings.  Your board needs and wants to hear from you.

For example, do you have an idea for a program or workshop for 2013-2014?  Do you want a chapter-wide challenge or does the idea of another round robin pique your interest?  Let me know.  What about an idea for a summer event?  Got one, well, share your ideas!  Field trips, shopping trips, quilt-ins are all fun and have been quite popular with our members.  What activities do you like best?  We are listening!
Your comments and feedback are appreciated!   Thanks. . . . Ruth Morgan

2013 QU Raffle Quilt Update

As we welcome in the New Year, our raffle quilt makes her last few appearances at Chapter visits.  This is a good time to think about scheduling visits with venues beyond QU.  Perhaps you are a member of another organization that would welcome showing our quilt with a brief review of the creation of Celtic Celebration.  And of course ticket sales.

Mt. Vernon alone is nearing the 1,000 mark in ticket sales. Unbelievable as that may sound, with only 125 more tickets to go we will reach that number.  Let's make it a banner year for QU as we approach our 40th Anniversary. We can do it!  Showing the quilt to others can help.  Contact me to schedule a time this February or March.

See close up pictures of Celtic Celebration and more facts and trivia on our QU Fundraising link: http://www.quiltersunlimited.org/ .

MVQU BUSINESS MEETING
NOVEMBER 27, 2012

The meeting was called to order at 12:30 by Ruth Morgan, President.

There were no visitors or new members.

The Minutes of the October meeting stand as submitted without any changes.

Treasurer’s Report:  Mary Downey reported that we now have 89 members.  Our financial bottom line is quite good.  The auction was another financial success.

Auction:  Andrea Gribble commented that the auction was harder work this year.  Ro Coller was a huge help with storage, making baskets, making food for lunch, etc.  Ro has indicated that this will be her last year as co chairman of the auction.  Ruth presented Ro and Andrea with gift certificates for all their labors.  24 non-MV members attended the auction.  (Ro’s chicken salad recipe that she made for the lunch is on the blog!).

Ruth complimented the current board for their willingness to step up when needed and their timeliness is responding to any requests.

Options Paper:  Libby Dudley, Mary Downey and Jill Crispino talked a little about the Options Paper that they have prepared to help determine the future of MVQU.  A copy was available for all who attended and the rest of the copies will be mailed to those who were not in attendance.  A short discussion followed and in January we will have further discussions on the topic.  If members have any comments in the meantime, they can email them to Ruth.

Programs and Workshops:  Libby read a letter from Judy Shapiro thanking us for  our note about the beading workshop.  It was the first thank you she had ever received for a workshop.  Judy would be willing to give a follow on workshop for anyone interested.  Lynne Fishburn will ask Lynn Miller if she would  help her organize a future class.  Libby also talked about the upcoming lectures and workshops.  Information on these are available on the blog.  She mentioned that most teachers will not be sending sample quilts to be shown to advertise the workshops as it is getting too expensive and some of the quilts have been damaged.  The Georgia Bonesteel and Karen Combs workshops will be open to non members after January 1.

Mystery Quilt:  Mary Mazzuchi passed out directions for Part 4 and Part 5 of the mystery quilt.  Part 6 (the conclusion) will be available in January.  She suggested that the quilts be shown at the June luncheon.

Raffle Quilt:  Angie Miller reported that MVQU members have bought 875 tickets so far for the 2013 QU Show raffle quilt.  She has three more visits planned to show the quilt and encourage folks to buy raffle tickets.  She suggested that it would be great if MVQU could reach a goal of 1,000 tickets sold to our members.

Quilts for Thailand:  Angie displayed the dozen quilts that have been given for her trip to Thailand to be given to children in the AKHA program that she will be part of in December.

December Luncheon:  Joan Peake and Nancy Barkume reminded us that the luncheon will be potluck and asked for donations of appetizers, main dishes, salads or desserts.  Also the red and white blocks we have been making are due at the luncheon.  Libby reported that Mary Kerr will be doing a book signing and presentation at the luncheon.

Hospitality:  Refreshments were provided by Cathy Marciano, Joan Peake and Carol Conahan.

Door Prizes were presented.

Announcements:
Lynne Fishburn said that the December deadline for the newsletter would be Dec. 27 following Christmas.  She also stated that she will start registering quilts for the QU show in January.  Registration forms are available on the blog.

The next Community Service day will be January 29.  The November date was cancelled because of Hurricane Sandy.

Dotty read a thank you letter from Sierra Smith for the friendship blocks that we sent her.

Patricia Bolton , Tammy Marciano and Pat Alfredson (the Nominating Committee)  will start making phones call soon for candidates for next year’s officers .

Show and Tell:  Those participating were Beth Smith, Gigi Corbin, Dotty Eisenhour, T Carter, Libby Dudley and Ann Marlin.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 1:45 PM.

                                                            Respectfully submitted,

                                                            Dotty Eisenhour, Secretary

5th Tuesday Community Service
Our next 5th Tuesday event will be January 29, 2013, from 11 a.m. till 3 p.m. in the main meeting room at Hollin Hall Senior Center.  We'll be making the flannel baby blankets that were planned for October but postponed due to Hurricane Sandy.  This project requires two (2) pieces of prewashed flannel, one 40 inches square and one 30 inches square, plus coordinating thread.  That’s it!  Flannel shrinks, so wash your flannel before the workshop.  Mary Downey will be leading this workshop.  If you do not have flannel, come anyway, we have some donated pieces and can use the extra hands.  Let’s make some blankets.  Here is a video that will give you an idea of how easy they are to make.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqwdNqMZ8Ro&feature=related

The Quilt Show is Coming
Now is the time to be getting your quilts ready for the show.  Online registration will begin in January.  This year members are restricted to registering only four (4) items.   Also, this year your quilts must be quilted and bound when registered.  I will be available to photograph and measure your quilt 30 minutes before the February Business and Program meetings and after the meetings.  I will also be available at the bees in February.  The last day for measuring and photographing your quilt for the show is February 26, 2013.  This date is not negotiable.  I will be having foot surgery on the 27th, so I must complete the quilt registration process on the 26th.  Instructions for getting your quilt ready for the show can be found below as well as on the blog under MVQU Administrative Forms.

Lynne Fishburn, Quilt Collector

The 2013 QU Quilt Show Registration Process

Who can register a quilt? Any QU member in good standing may enter up to four quilts in the QU Quilt Show May 31-June 2, 2013. This is not a competition or a juried exhibit; it is an opportunity to show your fabulous quilts to a very appreciative audience.

Why do we need to register online? Having all the information online ensures that all information is correct, entered in the right place and can be used simultaneously by all the different show committees. This registration system greatly improves the process of getting a quilt through the entire line-up of committees and hanging in the desired location correctly.

How do I enter a quilt?
*If you feel comfortable with your computer skills, simply go to www.qushowentry.com and follow the instructions on the screen.
*If you do not have a computer or are certain that you just can’t wade through the process alone, we can help in person or over the telephone. Or if it is still too daunting, you can fill out a “Quilt Registration Worksheet”, bring it to us and we’ll register your quilt for you. Worksheets will be available at the meetings.
*This process will be much simpler than you think and you will be surprised at how well you fare on your own.

Helpful hints
·         Have all of your information gathered in one place before beginning, including your personal contact info, the name of the designer or pattern, name of the challenge or names of other quilters who worked on the quilt.
(Use the Quilt Registration Worksheet on the Blog.  Fill out a worksheet for each quilt before logging in on the website.  Using the worksheet will greatly simplify
And streamline the registration process for you.)
·         Decide in advance the priority numbers for your quilts in case they cannot all be hung in the show.
·         Do not worry about the dimensions of your quilt, as the collectors are still required to measure and photograph your quilt.
·         Use only one chapter to enter all of your quilts even if one is a challenge quilt for another chapter.
·         During the online registration process, do NOT use your browser “back” button to go to a previous page, as this will cause problems with your registration.
·         In order for you to have the same computer designated quilter registration number, please register all of your quilts at the same time.   Because later entries will have a different quilter number assigned and may be harder for us to find during the editing stage please let me register these quilts for you.
·         Once you fill out all the information (all fields must be completed on the form even if your name is the answer for several of the fields), hit the “submit” button in order to finish the process. Once it has been entered, you will not be able to edit the entry but we can do that for you through the admin page if editing is required.
·         The on-line system will assign a number for each quilt artist and each quilt, you do not have to remember these numbers but you DO need to print out the confirmation page you receive at the end of the online registration which will have this information.  You will also receive a confirmation email sent to the email address you entered when registering your quilt.  When you receive this email please forward the confirmation  to mvququiltcollector@gmail.com
·         Each chapter challenge entry must have the same “standard/official” name listed or they will not hang together.  The Big QU Challenge categories are:
“Red, White and Quilted All Over” and “Celebrate Forty”.  If you participate in these challenges the entries do count towards your maximum of four.   The Mt. Vernon challenge is the Round Robin and UFO Swap.
What needs to happen after you register on-line? Print out the confirmation page and bring it with your “show ready” quilt to a February meeting.  Each quilt must still be measured and photographed and I will enter this information on-line through the admin page.

What is a “show ready” quilt?  A quilt that is completely finished, has a hanging sleeve at least 4 inches deep, has a label with the quilters name/chapter/quilt name/telephone number sewn on the bottom right corner of the back of the quilt and each quilt must arrive in a carrying sack with the same information listed above (plastic bags of any kind are unacceptable).

When will the pictures and measurements be taken? I will be available at meetings and bees in February 2013 to measure and photograph your quilts for the show.  So as not to detract from our regular meetings, measuring and photographing will take place 30 minutes prior to meetings and immediately following adjournment of meetings.   I will also be available at the bees starting at 12:30. If you cannot attend one of these meetings you may ask a friend to bring your quilt for measuring and photos (be sure your friend has a copy of your confirmation page).  You may also contact me to make other arrangements.

What is the deadline? The on-line form gives a deadline of March 8, 2013; HOWEVER, I must still be able to measure, photograph and edit your entries by that date so the deadline for Mt. Vernon QU will be February 26, 2013.

What if I have more questions? Feel free to contact me by phone or at mvququiltcollecter@gmail.com.

         Akha Quilts of Love

Thanks to the generous donations of Mt. Vernon QU Members, we were able to bring a dozen quilts to the Akha Youth Development Center in Northern Thailand December 2012.  Graduating teenagers were at two separate locations.  Most of the girls met us at the hostel, Thai-Akha Ministry Foundation (T-AMF).  The older boys were living at a dorm about a half hour away, located in Chiang Rai near the University.

It was explained to us that a few of the seven (7) kids due to graduate next year, were struggling.  The staff leaders, Luka and Ghan Chermui, felt that while graduating High School is good, the students should do their best always. They want to encourage students to excel so that they will have an opportunity for higher education. We were asked to help reinforce the importance of education as quilts were distributed.

We met with the graduating girls first.  All the younger kids sat nearby.  Luka called Sumalee forward.  He explained that she held the highest grade of all the graduates.  As the best of her class, she would be the first to choose the quilt of her liking from among those draped over the table.  Sumalee giggled with excitement.  She moved from quilt to quilt, admiring them all.  Small voices echoed from the sides of the room as the seconds passed.  First she reached for one quilt, then another. Within minutes, she pulled out the one that was just right for her; a bright red and white quilt featuring a square in a square pattern. Everyone clapped as she wrapped the quilt over her shoulders, squeezing it up around her neck.  It went on like that, with the second highest GPA, Someying, choosing a long flannel quilt, and so on.

Meeting with the boys was a lot quieter.  13 young men reside at the dorm, though not all were there when we arrived.  Of those receiving quilts only three were present. We went through the same process with them outside the house. The next day, Daniel, a previous graduate who now works at a 5-Star Hotel, told us that all the recipients slept under their quilts that very night. They made loud comments from their rooms to the others about how warm they were in their “blankets.”  Some Akha words don’t translate to English, like quilt vs. blanket. But maybe we can work on that…In the meantime, “Thank You,” to all who donated Akha Quilts of Love again this year!!!

 Akha Redwork Class
In December 2012, hostel kids of various ages met to learn to do Redwork. A huge group of girls and boys entered the dining hall as the kits were set out. Each kit included red embroidery floss, along with two other colors, three needles, scissors, hoop, pencil, thimble, 4 cuts of muslin, and extra spools of thread. The children searched through the plastic bags, finding kits with colors they liked.  Once they understood how to start, turn, and stop the stem stitch, and skimmed through the picture books for ideas, they drew out designs on muslin, some right up to the edge of the hoops. It was hard to explain leaving enough space at the edge.  Some were determined to use all six strands of thread. As time went on, some kids left to do chores, and others arrived until almost all the kits were taken.

After about four hours, we distributed the last of the fabric, took a group picture, and swept up threads.  Everything went very well, and I could tell most got the hang of it and enjoyed this class. What really took me by surprise was walking out of the dining hall toward the winding road that leads to the Guest House.  Three boys were standing to the left, one holding a hoop. The other holding a needle with a long strand of thick thread, was backstitching letters to make what appeared to be a sign.  Then behind a prop the kids were building for the Christmas show, was a 13 year old named Somsat. He was sitting on bags of rice, by himself, stitching with a small hoop.  We moved on to a group of girls huddled around a table in front of their dorm.  They nodded, “Sawadee Ca” as we approached, raising their fingers with hoops in hand, then back to happily stitching away.

Doesn’t that just make your day? It certainly did mine! In that moment, all the effort and energy to prepare for the class was worth every bit of the time. And there were enough kits for every child who came into the room. I could not have pulled this off by myself.  So many of you donated items for the Redwork Class—You Know Who You Are.  From the bottom of my heart, I Thank You All.
Angie Miller

MOUNT VERNON QUILTERS UNLIMITED
WORKSHOP:  “Interlock, Revisited”
Wednesday, March 27, 2013   9:30 – 3:30
Teacher: Georgia Bonesteel

Spend the day learning from famed quilter Georgia Bonesteel, the creator and host of the long-running TV series “Lap Quilting”, produced by University of North Carolina Center for Public Television.  Georgia is the author of numerous books, and has taught a wide variety of styles and techniques throughout the world.  MVQU is honored to host Georgia’s workshop “Interlock, Revisited” on Wednesday, March 27, 2013 from 9:30 to 3:30.  Class maximum is 25.  Class location: Heritage Presbyterian Church, 8503 Fort Hunt Road, Alexandria, VA 22308.

A longtime seamstress, Georgia attended Iowa State University and graduated from Northwestern University.  A Home Economics and Merchandizing degree enabled her to get a job in the Fashion Department of Marshall Field & Co. Marriage and three children took the Bonesteels to New Orleans where she renewed her love of sewing. There, she was a guest on a television series, Sewing Is Fun, sponsored by Sears and Roebuck & Co. where she learned valuable television skills.

Her first quilting venture was Cajun Quilters, located in the French Quarter.  She sold one-of-a-kind quilted patchwork evening bags that she made from necktie scraps.  After moving to North Carolina in 1972 she became interested in full-size quilts and began teaching at Blue Ridge Community College in Hendersonville. Soon after that her mother suggested she share her teaching skills on television. The rest is history. The “Lap Quilting” show is now in its 12th series. In 2003, Georgia became the 34th honoree inducted into the Quilters Hall of Fame.  For many years, Georgia and her husband, Pete, were the owners of Bonesteel’s Hardware and Quilt Corner, long a focus for quilters in the western Carolinas.  Their current home in Flat Rock includes the Lap Quilting TV-production studio.  Learn more about Georgia at www.georgiabonesteel.com.

On Tuesday, March 26, 2013, Georgia will present a lecture to Mount Vernon QU entitled “Stitch By Stitch…Anything’s A Cinch.”  Starting from the beginning, follow the growth and development of The Lap Quilter.  Personal fabric and design pitfalls are revealed as the learning process is explored.  Follow this up on Wednesday, March 27, with a great day of stitching with Georgia.

Early-Bird Special – Starting at the October 9, 2012 business meeting, you can sign up for the “Interlock, Revisited” workshop and take advantage of the Mount Vernon member “early-bird” special!  Get your member-only registration to Co-VPs Barbara Jones and Libby Dudley early and get $10 off the full price.  The full-day workshop is on Wednesday, March 27, 2013, from 9:30 – 3:30, full price is $60; “early-bird” is $50 through December 31, 2012.  Note:  Member registrations in hand or postmarked by “early-bird” closing date will receive the discount price.  Registrations will then open to all and will be full price for all.
