MOUNT VERNON QUILTERS UNLIMITED
“Beading for Quilters”
WORKSHOP
Wednesday, October 24, 2012 11:30 – 3:30
Teacher: Judy Shapiro
Learn how to add
some “bling” to your quilts and some basic beading techniques in this half-day
workshop with Annapolis quilter Judy Shapiro.
On Wednesday, October 24, 2012, Judy will visit with Mount Vernon QU to
teach an easy class that produces a beaded fig leaf. Students all work on the same project, using a $10 kit with all
supplies that they will purchase from Judy at class time.
Judy identifies
herself as a liturgical quilter, making paraments and vestments, banners and
other closely related items for religious spaces. She is a past artist in
residence of the Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC. Her works are permanently
installed in the Washington National Cathedral, as well as many other churches.
She fell in love with Baltimore album quilts and has completed several.
Included in her teaching schedule has been several years at the prestigious
Elly Sienkiewicz’ Appliqué Academy in Williamsburg, VA., as well as a guest
lecturer at the LaConner quilt Museum in the Seattle, WA area as well as taking
part in many large shows. She currently speaks about her work as well as
presenting workshops to guilds and interested organizations about the “John
Wesley Baltimore Album” quilt. Those
who attended the Annapolis Quilt Show this year and last will have seen some of
Judy’s stunning work. Judy will present
a trunk show at MVQU’s program meeting on Tuesday, October 23.
Judy became
reacquainted with beads after many years while finishing her first Baltimore
album quilt when she made a visit to Theodora’s Beautiful Beads and within two
months she became a teacher there. Of particular interest to her are complex
beaded beads, complex woven neckpieces and of bead appliqué. She loves to teach
courses in the embellishment of quilts and other objects. She says “quilts and
beads are a natural combination”.
Class maximum is 25. Class
location: Heritage Presbyterian Church,
8503 Fort Hunt Road, Alexandria, VA 22308.
