This year was an e
xciting one for Mt. Vernon. We were “Wild and Free” with Pat Sloan; went “Back to School” with some of our more experienced members; learned about how quilting is a good way to make friends with Aby Dolinger; found out from Lynda Poole Prioleau that “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” was not just a movie; looked at “Symmetry and Surprise” with Paula Nadelstern; were able to “Jump Start Our Creativity” with Barbara Olson; and learned what to do with orphaned blocks in “Motherless Quilts” by Mary Kerr. We also met the challenge of “What’s Black and White and ???? All Over;” had a Blog of the Month; exchanged bow tie blocks; made our second annual retreat to Bird-In-Hand, PA; and met our goal of increasing the number of quilts for the show with a record of 82 items. Thanks to all of you.
As we go on vacation, attend family reunions, or just putter around the house this summer planning our next quilting creation, let us also think about what to carry those creations in. The 2008 Summer Challenge is to make a quilted tote bag large enough to carry a full size quilt, something that is both fun and functional. We can show off our new totes at the September meeting. As an added bonus, we will also have a beautiful bag to carry our Show & Tell items in for future guild meetings—can't wait to see what is in your hand on September 9th!
Mt. Vernon had 10 quilts in The 18th Annual Southern Maryland Quilt & Needlework Show at Sotterly Plantation in Hollywood, Maryland… and 5 ribbons were won! Participants were Aby Dolinger, Rhonda Adams, Beverly Dasch, Anne Poulin, Tammy Mannarino, Pat Alfredson, Kathy Edwards, and Barbara Zygiel. The show was from May 16-18, 2008.
Babara Zygiel took home an Honorable Mention on her quilt “Honeymoon Cottages”
Kathy Edwards took home an Honorable Mention with "Not My Dad's Bowties"
Pat Alfredson took 3rd with “First Signs of Spring” (Round Robin)
Aby Dolinger took 2nd on her “Turn About is Fair Play” (Round Robin)

“Majestic Mandalai” by Rhonda Adams took 1st and Best of Show!
Yeah, Mt. Vernon!!!!

MT. VERNON QU
Minutes of the 5/13/08 Business Meeting
The meeting was called to order at 12:35 by Beth Smith.
There were no new members or guests.
Minutes
The minutes of the April meeting were approved as presented.
Treasurer
Barbara Dove gave a favorable report on our finances. She is collecting the dues for next year which need to be paid by the June luncheon. She asked that we send her any changes to our roster information so that she can keep that up to date.
Hospitality
The refreshments were provided by Lynn Miller, Bert Garino, and Carol Conahan.
Quilt Collection
Quilts to be entered in the June QU show will be collected on May 20 at 12:30 until the end of the bee, and on May 27 from 11:30 – 12:15.
Programs
Joyce Keating announced that due to health problems with Monique Schutsky (who was to speak on Sashiko) there will be a “Sew In” on May 27 instead of the program. Ro Coller will have more table runner kits to be made for the Silent Auction. Beth suggested that we bring in our “Blog of the Month”quilts on May 27 as Rhonda Adams may not be able to be at the June 3 luncheon. Also, Lynda Prioleau is going to be the fabric buyer at the Variety Store and will be working there on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
QU Show Volunteers
Kathy Edwards would like to talk with those volunteering for the June show for a few minutes at the May 27 meeting.
Luncheon
Mary Mazzuchi reminded us that the luncheon will be on June 3 at 12:30 pm at the Senior Center. Set up will begin at 11:30. She said hats and gloves and any other “tea” costume would be fun. Food for the event should be anything suitable for a tea. The tea cup blocks will be collected at the luncheon and up until June 24.
Fund Raising
Pat Alfredson is now collecting items for the Silent Auction. Bring them to any of the meetings or bees.
Road Trips
Pat Alfredson announced that a road trip is planned for the Sotterly Plantation show on Friday, May 16. There are two carloads signed up so far. Seven members of MVQU have entries in the show.
On June 24 a trip is in the planning stage to go to the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond. They have a collection of 21 quilts. The cost for the museum is $10 and a box lunch is also $10. Please let Pat know if you are interested in going.
Sunshine
Barbara Tucker reported that she had sent a card to the family of Ray Kock who died on May 7. (He visited the bee on May 6 and showed two of his great quilts. This was a real shock!) His funeral was on May 12.
Quilt Show
Kathy Edwards needs 42 more volunteers for the show. There are now over 200 signed up. Also on Thursday, Friday, and Sunday they will need people to help set up and take down the quilts. They will pay $10 an hour for the set up and take down.
Evening Bees
Lynn Miller has arranged Conference Room 2 at the Sherwood Hall Library for evening bees this summer. They are scheduled for the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays in June and July. If there is enough interest, she will also schedule two for August.
Quilt Consignments
Gigi Corbin visited the Quilt Patch in Sycamore Square in Richmond recently. One person that she met in the shop is starting a consignment shop for selling quilts. She has a brochure for those interested.
Show and Tell
Members participating in show and tell were: Bert Garino, Carol Kunkel, Pat Alfredson, Ann Marlin, Donna Walbrecht, and Aby Dolinger.
Door Prizes
Door prizes were won by Gail English, Lucy Petitt, and Lynn Miller.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 1:05 pm.
