Veggie Squares

Turn this recipe into your own creation by using your own combination of vegetables.

2 (8-count) packages crescent roll dough
16 ounces cream cheese, softened
1/2 C. mayonnaise
1/2 C. sour cream
1 (1-ounce) envelope ranch salad dressing mix
1 bunch broccoli
1/2 head cauliflower
1 bunch green onions
8 Roma tomatoes
1 C. finely shredded Cheddar cheese
1 C. finely shredded Monterey Jack cheese

Open the roll dough and separate into rectangles.  Arrange the rectangles on a baking sheet to form one large rectangle, pressing the edges and perforations to seal.  Bake at 350 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes or until golden brown.  Let stand until completely cooled.
Combine the cream cheese, mayonnaise and sour cream in a mixing bowl and beat until smooth and creamy.  Add the salad dressing mix and beat until well blended.  Spread the mixture over the cooled crust.
Cut the broccoli and cauliflower into small pieces, slice the green onions and seed and chop the tomatoes.  Layer the vegetables over the cream cheese mixture and sprinkle with the cheeses.  Cover with plastic wrap.  Refrigerate for 4 hours or overnight.  Cut into squares.
Yield:  4 dozen

This recipe is from “The Keepsake Quilting Cookbook” of 2001.

Turkey Tea Sandwiches

Turkey Tea Sandwiches 1999, The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook, All Rights Reserved

Ingredients Scallion cream cheese:
3/4 pound (12 ounces) cream cheese, room temperature
1/2 cup minced scallions (white and green parts)
Pinch kosher salt
Pinch freshly ground black pepper

Sandwiches: 1 loaf dense raisin-nut bread,
unsliced 8 thin slices fresh or smoked turkey breast
Fresh basil leaves

Directions For the scallion cream cheese, combine the cream cheese, scallions and the salt and pepper in an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment. Do not whip.

For the sandwiches, have the store slice the bread lengthwise on a meat slicer into 1/4-inch-thick slices. (If that isn't possible, you can slice it crosswise with a very sharp knife.)

Lay out 8 slices of bread and spread them all with a thin layer of scallion cream cheese. Place a single layer of turkey on half the slices, cutting the edges to fit the bread. Place the basil leaves randomly on top of the turkey. Top with the other 4 slices of bread, cream cheese side down.
Lay the sandwiches on a baking sheet covered with parchment paper, cover with damp paper towels and wrap the sheet with plastic. Refrigerate until the cream cheese is cold and firm. Place the sandwiches on a cutting board and, with a very sharp knife, cut off the crusts. Cut each large sandwich in half crosswise, and then cut each half diagonally, twice, to make a total of 8 small triangles. (If the bread was cut crosswise, follow the assembly directions, then cut off the crusts and cut diagonally, twice, to make 4 small triangles.) Serve chilled.

Note: When I made these sandwiches for the meeting, I did not have any basil leaves, so I used pesto. Works well. I also bought the raisin nut bread at Harris Teeter's. Mary Downey

April 24, 2012 Show and Tell

E. Linda Guidotti presents her coverlet--"Maxine's Attitudes"  from Jean Ann Wright Book "Circle of Nine."

Linda's "Fan Quilt" is made with a separate pillow "cover" for her husband's cousins--Linda tells us that they married each other but they aren't cousins.
Linda presents "Fabric Addict Bag" and "Fabric Addict Doll."  The bag was made to carry sewing and quilting supplies.  And the doll has handmade shoes, underwear and glasses.

Ann Marlin presents "Love Those Cherry Blossoms"  The pattern was originally designed by Lisa Moore and called "Shoji Screen Asian Quilt Pattern."
Ann Marlin's second quilt is "Holiday Bubbles and Swirls."  The original pattern was called "Yellow Brick Road."
"Ann's Rainbow of Colors"  while multicolored used all solids and was sashed with black resulting in a mosaic design.
All three quilts were machine quilted by Lynne Fishburn.
Mary Stauss made "Snappy Squares" from an Augusta Cole pattern. Mary did not buy any fabric for this project making it a challenge to use all scraps from her stash.  She also found it a challenge to position the 2" squares and not have the blocks be too similar.  Angie Miller machine quilted it for Mary.

Mary bought this jacket at our November auction, the cardinal was sewn by Andrea Gribble.

Mary made another quilt  entitled "Knickerbocker Glory" from a book entitled "Jelly Roll Inspirations" authored by Pam Lintott.
She found it a good way to use bits of her favorite fabric.  It was machine quilted by Angie Miller.

Jill Crispino designed "Mola Fish Baby Quilt."  The quilt is made from 30 year old Molas brought back from Panama by her great grandparents.

Lynn Miller started with the charity workshop quilt top and added some vines to give "Urban Gardens" some pizazz.

Lynn bought sale fabrics over several years. When she sorted her flannels, these pieces all went together.  She laid out the design to use all the fabric she had.   She named her quilt "Elegance."

"Piece and Quiet" was originally designed by Rhonda Nelson and the pattern appeared in McCall's Quilting Magazine, April 2005 as "Spring Morn."   Lynn has made variations of this quilt a dozen times.  Each quilt always turns out beautiful and different each time with lots of opportunity to substitute applique, fancy quilting, trapunto, or to change sizes.

"Desert Sunrise," "Ocean Evening," and "Island Dreams" are quilts from the Boston Commons pattern found in McCall's Quilting in spring, 2000.  Lynn says that it took several tries to get what she wanted and resulted in a huge stash of Bali fabrics.

Joyce Keating had the top which she donated to the Boutique.  Mary Mazzuchi took the top and added a border, machine quilted it and finished it and it is now ready for the Boutique.

Mary Mazzuchi made "Rachel's Quilt" for a friend using the colors from her wedding.

T Carter presents "Little House on the Prairie Nine-Patch." Another traditional and original pattern by T.  T purchased this fabric from the "Little House on the Prairie Collection," by Benartex in 1987 while attending college and working at Northwest Fabrics and Crafts, in Bloomington, Minnesota--25 years ago.  When she came home to visit on weekends and during breaks, she and her Dad made basic utility quilts--log cabin, Amish, etc.  He cut, she stitched.  However, they never got around to quilting the "Little House" fabric.

T's Mama recently found this fabric in her closet--cut.  To her surprise, her Daddy had cut the strips!  Her Dad passed over in 2001, so finding his work touches her heart. Although she is not as impressed with this fabric today as she was as a 20 year old girl, she appreciates its simplicity and charm.  Above all, it reminds me of how much her Daddy loved her, and the joy they found in doing projects together.  She finished this quilt to honor her Dad and my humble past--growing up in a small town on the Minnesota prairie.
The back of the quilt shows off the wonderful quilting!

Libby Dudley designed this original pillow using scraps from the two blocks on the front that
were partly made up when she found them in a quilt shop scrap basket.   She found it fun to figure out what block they added up to.  The back, on the right, is "crazy" and uses up more of the similar fabrics also found in the same scrap basket.

Andrea Gribble was asked to teach a class on applique.  She designed this Baltimore Album block, "Farewell My Darling" specifically for that class.

Andrea displays a number of Yukata Purses that Ricki Frost made.  They are based on a McCall's Quilting magazine pattern.

Andrea made this Envelope Clutch with Yukata fabrics from an online pattern.

Jim Melton purchased four(4) Chinese silk blocks at a yard sale.  He designed this "China Wall Hanging."  The antique blocks were sewn onto purple, trimmed in black and set in blue.  Jim then hand quilted it.

Show and Tell--March 13, 2012

We began our Show and Tell today with the quilt tops from the "Circle of Nine" Workshop conducted by Jean Ann Wright. We all started with nine squares.   Jean Ann showed us how to use spacers so that our nine squares appear to float on the quilt.   Here are our results.

Mary Downey's squares were originally made during the Stack-n-Whack® workshop with Bethany Reynolds.  There she began with a Japanese floral fabric(which you can see as the border in this picture) and made squares that were quite varied in both color and pattern.  The squares did not readily go together.   The Jean Ann Wright "Circle of Nine" workshop solved that problem.

Sierra Smith boldly added green to the floral spacers around her blocks.

Joan Peake named her quilt "Patchwork Peonies."

Lynn Dilles used black spacers then added multiple borders to complete her quilt.

Anne Guenther added some blue floral spacers to her squares.

Carol Kunkel, our VP and Program Chair, got her top finished, too; she bordered her spacers.

Our regular Show and Tell followed.

Pat Alfredson here shows "Very Hungry Caterpillar."

Here is Pat's "Out of Her Comfort Zone". She obtained the blocks at Cardinal Quilters and she machine and hand quilted them.

Pat Alfredson shows us "Petunias" designed by Susan DeLaney

Carol Conahan pieced and appliqued her "Black Eye Susan."

Barbara Zygiel shows us her original design for her "Hankie Memento Miniature Quilt" made from vintage hankies.

Carolyn Paden shows us both the front and back of her fractured  9-patch.  The quilt is hanging in the library on Sherwood Hall Lane for a couple of months

T Carter presents her "Prairie Ablaze!" It is both a traditional and an original pattern.
She created Prairie Ablaze! to honor the Minnesota prairie and indigenous rock carvings at the Jeffers Petroglyphs. She bordered a native American Star with photographs of prairie flowers/plants--printed on fabric--which she had taken at the Jeffers Petroglyphs. These plants/flowers include Yarrow, Red Clover, Prairie Rose, Dogbane(Native Americans used the stems for rope), Prairie Sage, Wild Garlic(Native Americans used Wild Garlic as an antiseptic), June Grass, Daisy Fleabane, Blanket Flower, Goat's Beard, Lead Plant(its presence indicates a prairie in good condition), Hoary Vervain, Common Mildweed.  On the back of the quilt, she signed the quilt with a photograph of herself visiting the site when she was five years old, May 30, 1971.
This quilt will be on display in the interpretive center during the 2012 season (Thursday, May 24, 2012 through Labor Day) at the Minnesota Historical Society, Jeffers Petroglyphs Historic Site, in Comfrey, Minnesota.

"Jump In and Swim"  is an original design by Lynn Dille using EQ7 with original embroidery digitized appliqués.    She placed the appliquéd frogs in the corners.

Co-Presidents' Message

Fellow Quilters,
It’s May. Beautiful weather, beautiful flowers and gorgeous quilts!
Wasn’t last month’s program with Karen Stone something special? Wouldn’t you just love a peak at her stash? All that color and pattern, I just loved her comments about fabric shopping and always needing and wanting more. Sound familiar, quilters?
We have one more program and workshop this season with Mike Ellingsen, May 22 and 23. There are spaces left in Wednesday’s workshop for those of us who want to learn spectacular quilting on our home sewing machines.
We want to thank Libby Dudley, Nominating Chair and her committee, Sierra Smith and Barbara Dove for their outstanding work on presenting a strong slate for next year’s Executive Board.
At the April business meeting, we distributed our survey. Mt. Vernon would not have this survey without Andrea Gribble’s help. Thank you Andrea! If anyone has not completed a survey, more will be available at the May 8th business meeting. We are interested in what you think about who we are and where we are going. Happy Quilting, Ruth and Ro

Vice President's Message
Our final program of the year features Mike Ellingsen

Check out his quilt and machine quilting.  And you can learn to do this type of quilting on your sewing machine.   The queen size quilt is absolutely fabulous, and Mike promises to teach his techniques for fabulous quilting without the back, neck and shoulder pain normally associated with quilting on a domestic machine.  There are still a few spaces available. Call or email Carol. Happy Stitching, Carol Kunkel MVQU Programs.

Elections

Nominating Committee Chair Libby Dudley announced the final 2012-13 Slate of Candidates as follows: President – Ruth Morgan; Co-Vice Presidents – Barbara Jones and Libby Dudley; Secretary – Dotty Eisenhour; Treasurer – Mary Downey; and Nominating Chair – Patricia Bolton. There were no nominations from the floor, hence the nominations were declared closed. The motion was made and seconded to accept the slate as presented. Co-President Ro Coller conducted the vote. There were no nays. The slate was elected as announced. Libby thanked Sierra Smith and Barbara Dove, her committee members, for help putting the slate together .

2012-2013 Membership
QU memberships are now available for the 2012-2013 membership year. Please complete the membership form and bring it to either a bee or meeting along with your membership dues (checks made out to MVQU). Life members, remember you must complete a form each year even though you do not owe any dues. Life members are no longer required to pay associate dues either. Also, we all need to complete a new form for the Senior Center Registration and that can be turned in with your membership form. It is available at the Senior Center and we have them at bees and meetings. To be included in the big QU directory you must renew your membership no later than September 30.
FABRIC EXCHANGE
We turned in the last nickle fabric exchange fabrics this past Tuesday and they will be divided up and returned at the business meeting May 8.  Those who participated in the exchanges now have quite a stash of 5" squares and we are beginning to see some of those come together in lovely quilts.  We hope you enjoyed participating in the exchange.

BOW TIE BLOCK EXCHANGE
The bow tie blocks are due on or before May 8 and we have already received some beautiful blocks.  We have 36 sets signed up.  It isn't too late if you want to participate.  Each set consists of 18   6 1/2 inch blocks with Kona black as the background and light to medium hue batiks for the "tie" fabric.
Community Outreach
For May, Carolyn Paden’s lively disappearing 4-patch will be on display in the Hollin Hall Senior Center office, and Lynn Eccleston’s “Rangely Stars Go to Japan” will be at the Sherwood Regional Library. A big thank you to both for sharing their work!

Community Service Charity Workshop on May 29, 2012-- 11:15-3:30 Hollin Hall Senior Center -- Room  112

We will be making the 10 minute block quilt by Susan McNeill.  Check out her video at www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbTHlGGKMPM

You will need to bring

  • Sewing machine
  • general items needed for sewing, i.e., thread, scissors, etc.
  • we will need one iron and ironing board
  • Fabric already cut into squares all the same size.  Remember each block requires 5 squares of fabric.
  • AND LUNCH

Here  is Lynn Miller displaying two quilts using this technique.  On the left,  Lynn  shows a quilt of valor having each block in the same color and middle square a contrasting color.  Lynn started with 5(five)-- 9 inch squares. .  On the right, Lynn shows a quilt, that started with 5(five)-- 5" squares, each square was a different fabric.

Minutes of General Business Meeting on April 24, 2012

The meeting was called to order by Co-President  Ro Coller  at 12:35 p.m. Ro welcomed everyone.

Last Month’s Minutes: With no corrections, the March Minutes were approved by the membership.

VP and Program Chair  Report:  Carol Kunkel  displayed a quilt made by Mike Ellingsen, and machine quilted by him on a home sewing machine.   Mike Ellingsen will give a lecture on May 22 and a workshop on May 23.   There are still some openings for the workshop.  See this newsletter for pictures of quilt and quilting.

Treasurer Report:  Mary Mazzuchi provided the treasury balance.  New membership forms will be out the first of May which will be e blasted to everyone.  You may bring the completed form and check to either a bee or the next meeting.  Mary announced that in previous years, life members did not pay dues but had to pay associate dues.  Now there will be no fee charged with becoming an associate member of a chapter if you are a life member.  However, everyone still has to fill out a membership form.

Registration Forms for  Hollin Hall Senior Center:  Ro handed out the forms and announced that the filled out form  can be returned to Ro, Mary Mazzuchi or Mary Stauss, our Hollin Hall representative.

Hospitality: Chair Barbara Dove  thanked today’s hostesses: Beth Smith, Dotty Eisenhour and Lynn Eccleston  for providing refreshments. She  asked for one more volunteer hostess for the Mike Ellingsen program.  Ro volunteered.

Nominating Committee: Chair Libby Dudley announced the final 2012-13 Slate of Candidates as follows:  President – Ruth Morgan; Co-Vice Presidents – Barbara Jones and Libby Dudley; Secretary – Dotty Eisenhour; Treasurer – Mary Downey; and Nominating Chair – Patricia Bolton.   There were no nominations from the floor, hence the nominations were declared closed.  The motion was made and seconded to accept the slate as presented.   Co-President Ro Coller conducted the vote.  There were no nays.  The slate was elected as announced.  Libby thanked Sierra Smith and Barbara Dove, her committee members, for help putting the slate together.

MVQU SURVEY SHEETS:  Ro passed out MVQU survey sheets and asked that they be returned at the end of the meeting.

2013 Raffle Quilt: Ro announced that the 2103 Raffle Quilt top was completed along with its carrying pillowcase .

Angie Miller announced that she was accepting possible names for the quilt and that the name or names would be presented at the May meeting.

Quilt Retreat: Chair Andrea Gribble reported that all 15 slots were filled for the upcoming retreat at Bird-in-Hand, PA and that it was a tribute to MVQU that some of the attendees were not members of MVQU.

MVQU November Auction 2012: Chair Andrea Gribble said the Auction Committee will take anything the members are willing to donate,  and the committee is looking for additional volunteers to serve beginning immediately.  Items are welcome anytime. Andrea relayed a story about 4 gorgeous quilts that were looking for a home.  Bill Rice, an associate member of MVQU was the recipient of the quilts.  Andrea got one of the quilts, a Texas star quilt, and it will be part of our fall auction.  Food items will be accepted on the day of the auction.

Ro reported that Lynne Fishburn took 100 5” squares with her and she was making 100 yo-yos for a quilt for the auction and that Beth Smith was working up house block design for the border.

Ro also indicated that Andrea is designing a sunflower appliqué quilt similar to last year’s strawberry quilt.

Bow-Tie Block and Nickel Exchanges: Co-Chair Mary Mazzuchi reported that the last fabric exchange(patriotic, red, white or blue) would be distributed at the May 8 meeting .  The Batik Bow-Tie Block Exchange is taking place May 8; 36 sets of 18 blocks each have been turned in.  There was still time to participate –just let Mary know of your interest.
2012 MVQU Boutique Report: Co chairs, Joyce Keating and Carol Conahan, displayed 2 Scottie
Dogs, and button eyeglass necklace and button bracelets that had been made and contributed to be
sold at the boutique.  T. Carter donated a wine bag and several pin cushions that she made; Lynn Miller donated pincushions that were made at the most recent bee; and Jill Crispino donated a large container of origami ornaments that she made.

2012 QU Show Quilt Collector:  Lynne Fishburn is away but Angie reported that she would accept quilts and get them to Lynne.  They were being stored at Lynne’s home.    However, she reminded everyone that  QU insurance coverage on the quilts doesn’t begin until May 1, so turning them in now would be at the owner’s risk.

2012 Big QU Boutique Committee Report:  Pat Alfredson is the chair of MV’s 2012 QU job.  She was not here today.  However, Ro reminded everyone to volunteer and to sign up online.  Those that had signed up earlier with Pat were registered to help.  Ro also indicated that Pat would be staying overnight Thursday before the opening day of the Show in order that Pat did not have to drive 30 miles to her home and back to the show.  She suggested that MVQU pay her hotel bill for that night.  It was moved and seconded and the motion carried that $100.00 from our treasury be used to pay her hotel bill.

2013 Big QU Challenge: Ruth Morgan noted that QU has now announced two challenges. The first is piecing and the second is more geared to art quilters.  The first will be “Red and White and Quilted All Over”  and the second is “Imagine 40.”  The imagine 40 is anything to do with the number 40.  Ruth explained that this theme  could be interpreted as turning 40, 40 colors, 40 fabrics, 40 blocks, to name a few ideas.   The quilt must be done by Feb. 2013 to enter it in the show.  The limit will be 6 quilts per member.

Thailand Charity Project Trip:  Angie Miller will be going to Thailand this winter  and is now collecting items so that she can conduct a redwork embroidery class.   She is making 50 kits and is still in need of embroidery needles and hoops (small) , thread (preferably red), thimbles, and scissors.  She would like to take a dozen quilts with her.  She has 5 tops now.  She would welcome more contributions.   (See Angie's update in this newsletter)
MVQU June Luncheon: Co-Chair Carol Allen said the Tuesday, June 12th event would be a potluck Tea Party.  So plan to bring the food that you would like to have at your tea party: appetizer, salads, etc.  Also bring a tea cup, a spring hat and your house blocks.

Door Prizes:  Ann Marlin announced that Joan Peake, Gigi Corbin and Jill Crispino were today’s winners.

Announcements: Carol Kunkel announced that everyone who ordered  the log cabin square by Jean Ann Wright should have received it by now and also that she had extra instructions should anyone need them.
Woodlawn Needlework Show Dates  are May 12- June 12: Kathy Zahaczewsky announced that applications for entry were due this weekend and also that there would be a raffle quilt.  She would have tickets for the raffle quilt later.  Note that the café this year is Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday only and the still delicious menu is more limited than in the past.

Quilt Show this weekend:  Andrea Gribble announced that The Friendship Star quilters were having their show at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds.
Artistic Artifacts Class:  Ro announced that Ruth Roush had signed up for an art quilting class at Artistic Artifacts.   The class had to be cancelled because they did not have  the 15 required participants.  Ruth was hoping that some of our members would be interested in taking the class.  Mary Downey announced that an  announcement about the class went out in the e blast that announced the Mary Kerr quilt show; a show also  held at Artistic Artifacts.  More information can be found at www.artisticartifacts.com under workshops.
Pat Bolton announced that she had a friend that was selling a dining room set for $500.  If interested in the set, please see her.

Following  Show and Tell, the meeting was adjourned at 2:15 pm by Co-President Ruth Morgan.
