MVQU - Show and Tell - April 12, 2011

Another great Show and tell.

Barbara Zygiel "Miniature House Quilt" made to donate to the chapter auction

Pat Alfredson's quilt was retired ties. A crazy quilt made from her husband's silk ties after he retired
Sierra Smith brought her Angel (above) and a line of elephants (below). The elephants will be donated to the boutique at the QU Quilt Show in June.

Ann Marlin called her quilt "Dancing Delight". It is for the benefit dance for her Northern Virginia Country Western Dance Association. All proceeds will go to the Fisher House. Suzanne Shaw graciously did the quilting.

Suzanne Shaw showed her "Welcome" wall hanging and the two quilts below which she is donating to the MVQU auction in November.

Suzanne's Fans

And a wonderful quilt with a scalloped border - also from Suzanne.

Kay Brill displayed her Christmas Tree (above) and her Flying Geese (below).

Jim Melton brought the beginning of a quilt with Chinese silk designs sewn on a purple square with thoughts of possible red, blue, green cotton squares for as many of the Chinese designs that he can scrape up. Eventually all will be sewn together to make a very lovely and different quilt top.

Presidents’ Message

Since moving to Virginia, my husband and I have made it a point to go to DC and enjoy the cherry blossoms every spring. Rituals like these mark the passage of time and help us look to the future. We have many activities to look forward to here at Mt. Vernon. Annette Ornelas comes in April and Mimi Dietrich in May. Be sure to mark your calendar. You won’t want to miss these lectures and workshop opportunities. We also have our annual retreat planned for the first week in May. This year will be my first opportunity to go away on retreat since joining Mt. Vernon. I’m so excited. Our Annual June Luncheon will be held at Indigo Landing this year, June 7, 2011. This is not our normal meeting day so be sure to mark your calendar. Check the newsletter for details about all these upcoming events.

Thursday, May 5th is the Quilters Unlimited Annual Meeting at NOVA. Augusta Cole will be the guest speaker. Check the newsletter for details on her workshops being held May 6 and May 7.

June 3, 4 & 5 are the dates for the 2011 Quilters Unlimited Annual Quilt Show at the Dulles Expo Center. Set up day is June 2. Mt. Vernon is responsible this year for the Program and the Cards. Andrea Gribble is doing a fantastic job pulling together all the bits and pieces that go into the program and arranging for the printer. Agnes Purcell has lent her most excellent computer skills to the task of organizing the registration information and printing the cards that will be pinned to every entry in the show. We will need many volunteers on June 2, set-up day, to help pin the cards to all the show entries. Keep checking the Big QU website for show updates. When you go online, www.quiltersunlimited.org, click on QU Show on the left menu bar for show information. There you will be able to access a list of this year’s vendors, a list of demonstrators, a description of available classes, and print a registration form. There are still seats available for the Eleanor Burns Lecture on June 2 at NOVA. Registration forms for this lecture are available as well on the QU Show page.

This year’s Quilt In was well received with lots of positive feedback from our sister chapters. Anne Poulin put together a great plan for the Quilt In. The event ran without a hitch thanks to all who came to set-up, clean up and help through out the day. I say, “Mt. Vernon, pat yourselves on the back for a job well done”.

I look forward to seeing you all at the Business Meeting, April 12th.

Mt Vernon QU Minutes of Business Meeting March 8, 2011

The meeting was called to order by President Lynne Fishburn at 12:31 PM. Lynne welcomed everyone and reminded them to sign-in out front as well as at our table. She also introduced Maureen Gray who organizes volunteers for the Quilt Show in June. Maureen explained the need for volunteers and made available a sign in sheet throughout the meeting.

Approval of Minutes

The first order of business was to approve the February minutes. There was one request to change “Quilt” to “Display Window” in reference to the Martha Washington Library. The minutes as amended were approved.

Reports

Treasurer – Dotty Eisenhour provided a report on our financial standing. Applications for New Year membership and pins will begin in May.

Vice President – Gigi Corbin reminded everyone that the March lecture “A Stroll through my Garden” with Augusta Cole will be held March 22. We will be hosting Annette Ornelas April 26 with a lecture on Dimensional Curved Piecing. Registration for the Annette Ornelas workshop on April 27 will be made available soon.

Quilt Show Committee – Lynne Fishburn announced that 689 items will be on view at the QU Quilt Show. She reminded the membership to sign up today for a date and time to volunteer. Registration forms for the Eleanor Burns lecture are available at the table up front. The Vendor list is on the website and one copy available at the table to review. Class registration has begun. The forms are available on the website.

Quilt Show Classes – Lynne introduced Eileen Linares, who is organizing the classes for the QU Quilt Show in June. Eileen mentioned that Eleanor Burns tickets are now $20. She has forms available for those who do not have access to the Internet. The Saturday Eleanor Burns class is more than half full. Also, other local Quilters are offering a variety of classes. Eileen displayed samples of some of the classes in the back of the room for members to view. She also explained that if you take a class, you will be given a complimentary wristband for that day. Some classes are half day and some are full day. Eileen was available the remainder of the meeting to answer questions or sign up for classes. She also helped with signing up volunteers for Maureen.

Big QU Raffle Quilt – Lynne introduced Robyn Kampf from Reston QU. Robyn revealed that the Reston Raffle Committee decided the raffle quilt should be a quilt that a man would sleep under. With that in mind Anne Webber designed “Autumn in Reston”. All the names of those who participated are listed on the back. The quilt measures 90 x 90. Five different members piece the quilt, it was hand appliquéd by eight and binding was completed by two. She encouraged everyone to especially take a look at the back. Cheryl Kotecki custom machine quilted the top with 12 different threads and did a fantastic job. Raffle tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5. Proceeds support the Quilters Unlimited mission for education and community service. Robyn was available at the back table to answer questions throughout the meeting. Dotty Eisenhour volunteered to handle raffle tickets for MVQU.

Big QU Raffle Quilt for 2012-2013 Program Year – Lynne reminded members that the 2012-2013 Program Year is Mt. Vernon’s responsibility to provide a raffle quilt. Rosemary Coller and Pat Alfredson are leading a committee for this project and will provide a report at our April Business Meeting.

Big QU Board Meeting – Lynne Fishburn announced the next Big QU Board Meeting is March 24th. This is the last day she will collect blocks for Big QU President’s quilt. Those collected will be mailed the following day. March 15 is the deadline though, and can be mailed to the address there on the pattern. Also, the Annual Meeting is May 5 at the Ernst Community Cultural Center at NOVA Annandale Campus. The speaker will be Augusta Cole. Watch for announcements about workshops.

Big QU Survey –Lynne reviewed the nine survey questions with the membership. After discussing each question at length, Lynne asked that surveys be turned in. She will summarize the responses and submit them to Big QU. For those who have not completed surveys, she asked that they email responses to her by this Friday, March 11.

Quilt Collector – Patricia Bolton announced that 30 quilts were collected from our Chapter, with eight of them being part of the Quilt Challenge. Patricia answered questions that were asked about label information on the back of show quilts. She also thanked everyone for participating.

Quilt-In – Lynne announced that she is collecting door prizes for the Quilt-In to be held Saturday, March 19, Hollin Hall 12:30 to 5:00 PM. The Raffle Quilt will be here again. Lynne Wilder will also be here to appraise quilts. Anyone interested should contact her in advance to schedule an appointment. Lynne reminded everyone to bring friendship blocks. Two of our members won blocks last year. A sign up sheet was passed around for volunteers. Lynne will be at Hollin Hall at 11:00 AM to set up. She has received feedback that a lot of people are excited about the Quilt-In this year, so we may be filled. The week of the quilt in, the Executive Board will meet to discuss details for the event. Bring a side dish or dessert, finger foods, preferably in a disposable container. Plates, napkins and water will be provided. Extra funds will be used for extra nice door prizes. Watch for E-blasts and try to give an hour that day to help if you can.

June Luncheon, June 7 at 12:30 – Lynne reviewed the details of our June Luncheon, hosted by Catherine Snyder. The luncheon will be held on Tuesday, June 7 at 12:30 PM at Indigo Landing, 1 Marina Drive Alexandria, VA 22314. The cost will be $20.00 per member for a choice of chicken with garlic sauce, salmon with lemon-caper butter or garden vegetable pasta. Reservations will be taken starting the March 22, 2011 meeting with the cut off being May 10, 2011. You may also mail your check to: Catherine Snyder, 13 Dacey Lane, Stafford VA 22556. Please make checks out to MVQU with June Luncheon and your name on the check. Please include your menu choice with check. Call Catherine at 571-236-4599 with any questions.
Topiary Block – Lynne announced that Suzanne Shaw agreed to lead the block challenge. Suzanne will have information about the block construction soon.

Fundraising – Rosemary Coller announced that smaller, less expensive items sold better at the Quilt Show Boutique. She has received two items so far. There is a small winter wall hanging and a small winter nightgown. Someone asked if there is a deadline. Mid-May is the latest to receive donations so that Rosemary has enough time to inventory items.

Quilt Retreat – Rosemary reminded members that the retreat will be held at Bird-In-Hand, Lancaster, PA. There will be a lovely room to set up for sewing. There are about 5-6 commitments so far. Two dates were presented: 1) Early May 2-4, 2011 or 2) Late May 23-25, 2011. A vote was taken with 10 in favor of early May and 7 in favor of late May. Going forward, May 2-4, 2011 is the date of the retreat. Ro will need a commitment soon of $25 to MVQU to secure these dates. An E-blast will follow the next couple of days. It will be a great time as always.

Community Outreach – Libby Dudley and Barbara Zygiel put up the Display Window at Martha Washington Library. A picture of the display was passed around for all to see. The display is up for the month of March. Libby asked that members please stop by and check out a book while you are there. And while there, please let the Librarian know you like this display.
Spring Hills Assisted Living Community – Lynne received a request from Krista Wells, Director of Recreational Services, at Spring Hills Mount Vernon. Krista would like a few of our members to come to their facility with quilts to show to the residents, some of which used to quilt. She would like us to visit in April if possible and prefers daytime to evening hours and is flexible on days and times. Several members were interested in presenting a Quilt Show for the residents of Spring Hills. Lynne asked that those interested contact Angie Miller, who volunteered to coordinate the event.

IBOL - Iraqi Bundles of Love – Lynne received word of this project in an email from Rosemary Coller. The people there have been under oppression for decades. Art La Flamme was asked by the Iraqi people for 500 bundles of love. Lynne passed out four large flat rate boxes that are available at the post office free of charge. The cost of postage is $12.50. This is not to be paid for by MV, so it is at your own cost. They will take any extra clothing or fabric you may have. Some suggestions are: Do send solid colors and simple prints. Less on people prints, novelty. Do send thread, needles or scissors, thinking about people who will be working by hand. If you are interested in doing this, let Lynne know. Rosemary received an email yesterday that 250 boxes have been collected so far.

Community Service – Joan Bingman announced that March 29th is the next 5th Tuesday on the calendar. Wheel chair bags will be made for this Community Service Project. Joan will have a pattern available at the meeting. Please do not bring fabric, as she has plenty. Please bring the regular tools needed to measure, cut and sew.

Senior Center Rep – Mary Stauss mentioned that when we begin membership forms in May, we will also be filling out Hollin Hall Senior Center forms. It is important that those forms are completed and submitted to Hollin Hall each year.

Nominations – Lynne announced that we still need a President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, & Nominations Chair. She emphasized that we must have a slate by our April business meeting, as our May business meeting is the last business meeting of the year. We cannot have one of them filled; we need all of them filled to move forward as a Chapter next year. Lynne asked if there were any questions about the positions. After a review of position responsibilities, Suzanne Shaw volunteered to be Treasurer, Libby Dudley volunteered to be the Nominating Chair, Jim Melton volunteered to be Secretary, and Carol Kunkel volunteered to be Vice President. The President’s position is the only position left to fill. So, if Anne calls you again, please reconsider. And if she has not called you, please call Anne. Questions were then asked about what the Big QU and Quilt Show jobs would be next year. MVQU will be responsible for Advertising and Food (for volunteers on setup day.) The QU event will be the Boutique. We will be responsible to set up and run it. The Quilt Show Committee Chair would need to attend monthly meetings. Lynne also reminded everyone that the other big job our chapter has to fill is the Blog/Newsletter. Agnes will not be doing this after June 30th. Lynne passed out copies of the position details for review.

Blog/Newsletter – Agnes Purcell reminded everyone the next deadline to submit newsletter articles is April 1st—submitting them early helps.

Hospitality – Joyce Keating first of all apologized for not being available during the last meeting when there was an issue to work out. She thanked members Kay Brill, Jim Melton and Marjorie Barondes for providing today’s refreshments.

Announcements
  1. This is the last day Kathy Edwards will collect rotary blades. Also, any fabric left from the free pile she left, will be put in the box for Iraq.
  2. Check the newsletter for upcoming area quilt shows.
  3. Cathy Z. mentioned the Cabin Branch show is this weekend at the Prince William Fairgrounds. And the upcoming Woodlawn event.

Respectfully submitted,
Angela Miller, Secretary
