Mt Vernon QU Business Meeting

March 9, 2010

The meeting was called to order at 12:30 PM by President Bert Garino.

J.J. Stinson is present to collect the 71 quilts made by our members for the premature babies in the neonatal intensive care unit at Inova Fairfax Hospital. Anyone who made one of these quilts needs to sign in so Bert can get the names to J.J.

The February minutes stand as written.

Treasurers’ report: Dotty Eisenhour reported the balance. The chapter is in good financial shape. We now have 95 members.

Vice President: Ellen Patton announced the programs for the next few months: the Karen Kay Buckley workshop on March 24th is full; Margaret Miller in April (the business meeting and program meeting will be swapped). Margaret Miller’s workshop (“Strips That Sizzle”) has 9 more openings.

Ellen is working on a strip for the Alzheimer Awareness Quilt which will tour the country. Anyone who knows someone with Alzheimer’s can sign that person’s name on the strip.

Nominating Committee: Contact Libby Dudley if you want to run for an office. We still need a volunteer to be Mt Vernon’s representative to the big QU Quilt Show for 2011. Our job at next year’s show is programs and cards.

2010 Quilt Show Rep: All information is on the blog. There is a meeting on Friday for the committee.

Webmaster: Make sure to check out the blog to see all of the changes that Agnes has made to streamline the site.

Hollin Hall: Mary Stauss reminds everyone that you must update your senior center registration form every year. Make sure to write “quilt guild” at the top of the form.

Retreat: The retreat is next week.

Spring Luncheon: Pat Alfredson and Mary Mazzuchi will start taking reservations in April.

Community Service: On March 30th we will have a work day from 11:30 am to 3:30 pm to work on pillowcases for various causes. So far our chapter has donated 59 quilts, 71 preemie quilts, 7 sets of doll clothes, 45 pillowcases, $250 gift cards, books and miscellaneous items to various charities.

Kathy Edwards will take donations of used rotary cutter blades to donate to a local artist. Kathy Zahaczewsky reminded everyone that the Woodlawn Needlework show runs through the end of March.

Unfinished Business: We need a Quilt-In Committee chair for March 2011. We also need a boutique committee chair and 5 volunteers for this year’s show.

Show and Tell - March 9, 2010

Lynne Fishburn shared two charity quilts that she quilted; one sampler made by Libby Dudley

and a Quilts of Valor quilt that a friend pieced.

Sierra Smith used a bag full of UFO pinwheel blocks to make several quilts, two sweet big girl quilts, two yellow quilts, two Quilts of Valor and stacks of preemie quilts to donate to INOVA’s Neo Natal Intensive Care Unit.

Oh - did we mention that Sienna says she likes to be an over-achiever?

Ann Marlin revealed a beautiful Japanese Gardens quilted panel that she quilted and a Fisher House Dance Club quilt (below), quilted by Ellen Patton.

Bert Garino finished a fun Martini Quilt wall hanging using techniques from the book Woven Quilts by Anna Fustino.

“Memories of the Metropolitan Museum of Art” is a wall quilt made from silk ties that a patient’s spouse sent to Kathy Edwards.

Cathy Hanratty finished a huge log cabin Noshi quilt that was quilted by Ellen Patton.

Dotty Eisenhour showed off two beautiful quilts with Kaffe Fassett fabrics to be donated to Quilts of Valor.

Jim Melton completed a manly “Tie Pillow” with ties he brought on a recent Queen Victoria cruise. Jim pieced the top during the sewing circles on the cruise.

No pictures were available for Mary Stauss' lively X Block Quilt or the star spangled “Glory Quilt” made by Joyce Keating from a pattern given to QU volunteers at the Dulles Expo last year

Not to be outdone - Joan Bingman provided her own show and tell of fashionable hair accessories.

March 2010 Newsletter

President’s Message

With the blizzards of 2010 behind us, we can only hope that spring comes early this year! Being snowed in did, however, allow us to get some fine quilting done. Look below and enjoy the pictures of all the wonderful Challenge Quilts that were revealed on February 16, 2010. This year’s theme, “Come Fly with Me” showed that IMAGINATION is indeed your creative ally. You definitely rose to the challenge.

Thanks to those of you who have already made preemie quilts to assist Boy Scout, JJ Stinson with his Eagle Scout project to collect quilts to donate to INOVA’s Neo Natal Intensive Care Unit. J.J. will be coming to our meeting on March 9, 2010 to make a final collection. If you haven’t made one, they’re easy, fun and very much needed. Please remember, quilts should me made of 100% cotton fabric, layered with 100% cotton batting, contain no embellishments or nylon thread and no side of the quilt should measure smaller than 12” or larger than 24”. Bet you can’t make just one!

I’d like to thank our Nominating Committee for the terrific job they did in presenting our slate of officers for next year. Nominations will remain open until elections are held on April 27, 2010. Keep in mind there are still many other opportunities for you to volunteer. First, we are still in need of a Committee Chair for the 2011 Quilt-In. If you love to throw a party, then this job is perfect for you and is a lot of fun. This position entails working with a committee to organize and host next year’s Spring Quilt-In. You and your committee will come up with a theme, select a date, reserve a venue and publicize the event to greater QU, as well as, host the event on the selected date. This is a guild function, so you will have plenty of support from members of MVQU, as well as from those who have previously chaired this event.

Secondly, we need a Chairperson to oversee our participation in the “Boutique” at this year’s Quilt Show. This person will collect and inventory all items to be sold by our guild in the “Boutique”, ensure items are delivered to the QU Chapter in charge, and arrange for 5 volunteers to give an hour each of their time to man the “Boutique” during show hours. We reap the benefits as a Chapter not only financially, but by sharing the talents of our members.

The third Committee Chair we are looking for is someone to represent MVQU for the 2011 QU Show. In addition to attending all QU Show meetings with other Chapter Chairs, this person will oversee our Chapter’s responsibility of “programs and cards”, considered to be one of the easier Quilt Show tasks. Agnes Purcell has volunteered to help with the computer work needed. This is a great way to get to know other quilters and the workings behind the scenes of the Big QU Show. Please see me or a member of the Nominating Committee for more information or if you are interested in volunteering for any of these positions.

This year’s Quilt In, hosted by Vienna QU, will be held on Sunday, March 14, 2010 from 1 – 4pm at the Falls Church High School. The theme is “Show Me the Money”. Click here for more information www.quiltersunlimited.org/docs/Winter09Nltr.pdf Think of this as one big bee. Hope to see you all there!

Not to be missed this month is nationally known speaker, Karen Kay Buckley. Her lecture “To Border or Not to Border” will be on Tuesday, March 23, 2010, followed on Wednesday by a workshop, “Drafting Appliqué and Free Feeling Fun Drafting Frenzy”. Please contact Ellen Patton if you are interested in attending the workshop or would like more information.

Finally, mark your calendars for the fifth Tuesday this month. On March 30, 2010, we will be working on service projects. This is a wonderful time to socialize with fellow members while doing good works with something we enjoy. More details to follow.

Smiles, Bert

May brooks and trees and singing hills
Join in the chorus too,
And every gentle wind that blows
Send happiness to you.
...An Irish blessing

June Luncheon --Tuesday, June 8, 2010

It takes a bit of imagination to picture this after all the winter we’ve been through, but spring really is going to show up and our Spring Luncheon is coming. It will be held on Tuesday, June 8, 2010, at 12:30 PM at the Mount Vernon Inn Restaurant.

This year there will be a choice of three menus plus a vegetarian Pasta Primavera. The cost is $16.00 a person and we will be taking reservations starting at the April business meeting. We will also be handing out kits for our June Luncheon Block. This year's theme will be butterflies, so plan to pick yours up.

The menus include: a Petite Filet Mignon with Bearnaise Sauce, Caesar Salad, fresh berries in a chocolate cup, OR Chicken Cordon Bleu with spinach salad, and an apricot breading pudding, OR Salmon with raspberry butter, Caesar Salad, and chocolate bread pudding. All of the menus come with fresh vegetables and potatoes.

Since the luncheon is after the QU Quilt Show, quilts will be returned following the luncheon by your Quilt Collector. If you have questions, please contact Mary Mazzuchi or Pat Alfredson.

Nominating Committee Presents Slate of Officers for 2010-11

Mount Vernon members are stepping up and filling the slate for 2010-11 chapter officers! The Nominating Committee announced its slate at the February business meeting.
  • President: Lynne Fishburn
  • Co-Vice Presidents: Lynn Eccleston and Gigi Corbin
  • Secretary: Angie Miller
  • Treasurer: Dotty Eisenhour
  • Nominating Committee: Ann Poulin

The nominating process doesn’t close until the April Business Meeting when the voting takes place. Sooo, if you would like to serve and the committee hasn’t contacted you, or if you’d like to recommend someone for an office, it’s still possible for members to throw a quilt in the ring…. Contact Libby Dudley (Chair), Rhonda Adams or Gigi Corbin.

37th Annual Quilters Unlimited Show --Vendor Committee Update

Greetings from QU Show Vendor Committee!

We have been busy! First of all, thank you to Cathy Hanratty, Lynn Eccelston and Gigi Corbin for all of your support and for working together to make this process move along as smoothly as possible.

We were able to convince the QU Show Chair to increase the number of vendors at the show from 75 to 85. I think we have indeed come up with a diverse and interesting group of vendors for this year’s show. You’ll see some of your favorites returning and some new faces. New to us this year:
  • BaBaBlankets- known for their work with the women of Ghana, they use the byproducts of the vegetables grown in Ghana to dye fabric,
  • The Hill-if you are an Art Quilter you won’t want to miss this one,
  • A Quilter's Rule-specialty rulers,
  • Auntie Ju's Quilt Shoppe-featuring quilt and needle punch products,
  • Fabric Creations-emphasizes Chenille products and jackets,
  • Hunter's Woodcraft--sells absolutely beautiful quilt stands and display cases, Nana's Needlework-specializong in Redwork,
  • Quilter's Treasure-Viking machines and my favorite ~ Daewabo fabric,
  • Quiltricks-displays pattern designs by Karen Comstock,
  • Studio 180 Designs- specialty rulers,
  • The Linen Lady-specializing in antique linens and quilts,
  • The Village Mercantile,
  • The General Store at Smith Mountain Lake,
  • The Fabric Peddler,
  • Bolt Over Fabrics and
  • Where Quilter's Gather (a breakoff from Burkholders Fabrics) all carry quilt fabrics, books notions and the like.

I truly hope that you are pleased with our selection and that you find a new vendor to add to your list of favorites. Also, the Education Committee and Volunteer Committee Chairs are making their rounds and visiting each of the guilds. Please be sure register for classes and to sign up to volunteer ~ hopefully as Vendor Tenders!! We are going to need tons of help.

I look forward to seeing you at our show!

Vendor Coordinator

Mt Vernon QU Business Meeting

February 16, 2010
The meeting was called to order at 12:41 PM by President Bert Garino. The meeting was postponed to this date due to the blizzard and was held at the Mt. Vernon Government Center.

Agnes Purcell’s husband, Ed, is visiting with us today.

The January minutes stand as written.

Treasurers’ report: Dotty Eisenhour reported the balance. The chapter is in good financial shape.

Vice President: Ellen Patton announced the programs for the next few months: Too Quirky Quilters will be here next week; Karen Kay Buckley in March; Margaret Miller in April (the business meeting and program meeting will be swapped). Margaret Miller’s lecture will be “Lookin’ Ahead” (all quilts, no slides) and her workshop will be “Strips That Sizzle”. There are 20-25 slots available for the workshop and the fee is $45; in May, Didi Salvatierra’s lecture will be “All About Baskets” and her workshop will be “Bodacious Baskets”. Ellen has contacted Cindy Needham to lecture next year. The topic will be “Thread Fact and Fiction”. The workshop will be an open thread bar where you can try different types of thread with your own machine.

Ellen also said that she is in need of more Quilts of Valor. She is also working on a strip for the Alzheimer Awareness Quilt which will tour the country. Anyone who knows someone with Alzheimer’s can sign that person’s name on the strip.

Nominating Committee: Libby Dudley announced the slate of officers for next year: President – Lynne Fishburn; Co-Vice Presidents – Lynn Eccleston and Gigi Corbin; Secretary – Angie Miller; Treasurer – Dotty Eisenhour; Nominating Committee – Ann Poulin. Nominations are still open until the elections in April. Thanks to committee members Rhonda Adams and Gigi Corbin. Libby requested volunteers for the QU Show Rep and Fundraising for next year in order to ease the transition for the incoming board. Our job at next year’s show is programs and cards. Barbara Tucker volunteered to chair the fundraising committee but will not store the items. Susan McDonnell volunteered space for storage.

Quilt Show Rep: Carol Kunkel would like volunteers to help her at the show with the vendor responsibilities. Pat Alfredson volunteered to help on set up day. Joan Peake, Agnes Purcell and Ellen Patton also volunteered.

Quilt Collector: Will be measuring quilts after the meeting.

Retreat: Ro Coller has registration forms. Only 7 people have signed up. The cost per person will increase unless there is a minimum of 10 people. The dates are March 15-17.

Unfinished Business: We need a Quilt-In Committee chair for March 2011.

New Business: J.J. Stinson, a boy scout from St. Louis Parish and a senior at Bishop Ireton HS is collecting quilts for premature babies as part of his Eagle project. His goal is 85 quilts for the neo-natal intensive care unit at Inova Fairfax Hospital. The quilts must be made of 100% cotton fabric, cotton batting, no nylon thread, no embellishments such as rickrack, etc., and must be washed before donating them. No side can be less than 12” or more than 24”. These quilts will go home with the baby when he/she is discharged. J.J. will be back on March 9th to collect any quilts we have made. Details can be found on the blog.

Show and Tell: Beth Smith, Barbara Dove, Kathy Edwards, Joan Peake, Lynne Fishburn, Bert Garino, Ellen Patton, Pat Alfredson, Libby Dudley and Gigi Corbin.
