Presidents’ Message
What a month March was – the Paula Nadelstern lecture and then her workshop. For anyone who missed it, you must try her techniques.
April is not going to slow down either. We have the bow tie block exchange, organized by Aby Dolinger, and th
e Barbara Olson workshop and lecture. On-going projects include making items for both the big QU silent auction as well as our own Fall Auction. The Quilt Show Committee, headed by Kathy Edwards, is working hard to get the volunteers for the show. Please volunteer if you haven’t done so already.
Pretty soon the nice weather will lure us all outside, so while it is still a little nippy, quilt, quilt, quilt!

“Quilting a Life, a Creative Journey” Lecture with Barbara Olson
April 22, 2008, 12:30 pm
On April 22, 2008, another great opportunity to expand your quilting horizons presents itself with a visit and lecture from the National and International award winning fiber artist and teacher, Barbara Olson of Billings, Montana.

During her lecture, “Quilting a Life, a Creative Journey,” Barbara will take us on a wonderful journey through quilting and creativity by sharing her evolution from quilter to quilt artist while showing us many of her award winning quilts. Most importantly, she will discuss the tools that helped her understand her life’s purpose. This is an important lecture for anyone wanting to expand their creativity and begin to likewise, know their life’s purpose.
Visit http://www.barbaraolsonquiltart.com/ to learn more about Barbara and to see her amazing gallery of quilts which have appeared in publications and exhibits around the world and are included in corporate and private collections across the country. “In the Beginning,” one of Barbara’s art quilts, was chosen as one of the “100 Best American Quilts of The Century.” She is also the author of “Journey of an Art Quilter, Creative Strategies & Techniques.”
**Please note the venue change—the lecture will be held at the Mt. Vernon Governmental Center, 2511 Parkers Lane, Alexandria, VA 22309, April 22, 2008, 12:30pm
**No refreshments will be offered so please plan ahead.

Machine Quilting Opportunity
Do you have a stack of tops just begging to be quilted? Here's the perfect opportunity to check them off your "unfinished objects" list. Melissa Papajohn, owner of BlackBerry Patch Quilting, Harper's Ferry, WV, and newest member of Mt. Vernon, has extended her holid
ay pricing on her longarm quilting services. Melissa will be here on April 21-22nd participating in our workshop and attending the lecture with Barbara Olson. She has agreed to pick up your quilts prior to the lecture—you save on the shipping charges! Please contact Melissa at mpapajohn@citlink.net with any questions you may have and plan to bring in those unfinished tops on April 22, 2008.
As a reminder, your quilt tops should be clean, pressed and free of markings and loose threads, front and back. Backing and batting must be at least 4 to 6 inches wider and longer on ALL four sides of the quilt. Quilt prices are determined by the size of your quilt in square inches. Quilt Pricing can be found on the October 23, 2007 posting of our Blog (go to http://mvquilters.blogspot.com/2007/10/quilting-services.html).

Nomination Committee
Tammy Mannarino announced the following members who have agreed to serve for 2008-2009:
Nomination Chairman: Jim Melton
Secretary: Dotty Eisenhour
Treasurer: Kathy Edwards
Co President: Lynn Miller
Co President: to be determined
Vice Presidents: Lynn Fishburn and Angie Miller
Our guild needs to fill all of these offices or we cannot continue as a chapter of QU. Also, if no one comes forward to take the position of co-president, Lynn Miller will not serve in this position. Hopefully the position will be filled quickly.
Programs
Rhonda Adams reminded us that Barbara Olson will hold a workshop at the Government Center on April 21st from 9:30 – 4:00. Barbara will also give a lecture on April 22nd at 12:30 at the Government Center. On May 27th, Monique Schutsky will give a lecture on Sashiko at the Senior Center.
QU Show 2008
Kathy Edwards attended the quilt show meeting on March 3rd. They have distributed 45,000 brochures. The QU website lists all the vendors for the show and there is lots of information in the QU March newsletter. There are 690 quilts entered by 341 members. They discussed the need for white glove volunteers. They are encouraging carpooling, with a prize to the driver. Joyce Keating will be accepting items for the silent auction at the show until April 22nd. Mt. Vernon is responsible for providing 265 volunteers for the weekend. Members were asked to sign up to volunteer with Tammy Fletcher today or send an email to: qushowvol@cox.net. The dates for the 2009 show have been set for May 15-17th.
Joyce Keating asked that items for the silent auction baskets, which the chapter is preparing for the QU show, be in by April 8th. (She also reminded us that items for the MVQU silent auction can be turned in any time.)
Fundraising
Pat Alfredson announced that the deadline for items for our silent auction is September 16th. The auction will be held on September 23rd.
The Amish blocks to be part of the QU show auction quilt need to be turned in to Pat soon. She now has 30, but needs a lot more.
Nancy McGlasson is still taking subscriptions for the “Fons and Porter” magazine as part of our fund raising for the year.
The next sewing circle will be April 15 to make table runners. Kits will be available. Just bring your machines and sewing supplies.
Spring Luncheon
Mary Mazzuchi reminded us that the luncheon will be held on June 10. We still need more tea party blocks.
Block Exchange
On April 8 Aby Dolinger will be collecting the bow tie blocks. They need to be in sets of 18. After they are given to Aby, the exchange will take place.
Historian
Mary Stauss has consolidated all the pictures that have been saved from our chapter. During this process, she found pictures of so many quilts that have been made during our history. She thought it would be fun to have some of the quilts that have been previously shown at QU shows be displayed again. This would have to have the approval of the big QU. (1971 was the first quilt show.) We will present the idea to the QU Board.
Quilt Pink
A book entitled Quilt Pink for Hope will be available soon. Both of our quilts are featured in the book. If you order through the chapter, you can purchase the book for $17.95.
