President’s Message

Spring has finally arrived and although most of us seldom use yellow in our quilts, those cheery yellow daffodils of the season always warm my heart. I also have a fondness for the perky little purple pansies that erupt into bloom this time of year, especially those determined ones left buried beneath 40 inches of snow this winter! Spring flowers and their renewal each year seem to inspire us and find their way into many of our quilts.

March was a busy month for MVQU. First, thanks to all of you made preemie quilts for INVOA’s Neo Natal Intensive Care Unit. JJ more then met his quota with our help and they are sure to warm the hearts of those tiny babies and their families. Our charity workshop at the end of the month was also very productive. We made a total of 84 pillowcases which will be donated to our various charities. We’ll bring them for you to see at our April Business Meeting before they go off to cheer their recipients. Karen Kay Buckley awed us with her beautiful quilts at her lecture on March 23rd, and for those of us that attended her workshop, we not only got insight on how she drafts those beautiful quilts, but working knowledge of how to do it ourselves.

Word has it a good time was had by all who attended the Third Annual Retreat in Bird in Hand, PA. I look forward to show and tell and to hearing all the stories in the coming months. Ro Coller will present some new ideas for next year’s retreat during the April Business Meeting and looking for member input.

Be sure you mark your April calendars for MVQU’s upcoming events. We have switched things around a bit and you won’t want to miss any of these amazing opportunities. On April 13, 2010 Margaret Miller will present her lecture titled, “Smashing Settings for Sampler Blocks” and on April 14, 2010 Margaret will host a workshop called “Strips that Sizzle.” At this writing there were only 2 spots left. Please contact Ellen Patton Ellen.patton@mac.com to reserve your spot and join in the fun.

At both of our April meetings, Pat Alfredson or Mary Mazucchi will be taking sign ups for our June Luncheon to be held at the Mt Vernon Inn Restaurant, June 8, 2010. More information can be found in last month’s newsletter here on the Blog. The luncheon is a great way to say hello to summer and share the company of our good friends and fellow members. Hope to see you there!

Didi Salvatierra Workshop – May 26, 2010

Join us for the last workshop of the year on May 26, 2010 when we will be making a wonderful little basket wall hanging. Didi Salvatierra www.didiquilts.com will show us how easy it is to make these colorful baskets and embellish them with readily available items such as large rick- rack or fill them with flowers cut from the large print in a fabric. Your May Baskets can be used all year long or brought out to remind you of spring when you are tired of all the snow that next winter is bound to bring!

The workshop will be held at the Mt Vernon Governmental Center on Parkers Lane from 9:00 until 3:00. Come, make some baskets with me!

Charity Workshops

Plenty of Pillowcases

Tuesday, March 30, we gathered at Hollin Hall Senior Center to make pillowcases for those in need. We set the stage with several work stations, employed assembly-line techniques and after 3 1/2 hours we completed 84 beautiful pillowcases finished inside and out with no raw edges! The twelve participants had a great time working together and enjoyed lots of good conversation while we worked.

June 29, 2010 – Nine Patch Nonsense

Our next Charity Workshop is planned for Tuesday, June 29 at Hollin Hall Senior Center from 11:30 to 3:30. We will be making Quilts of Valor. We need donations of fabrics that are red and blue. Small prints are acceptable and do not have to be themed patriotic, they just need to read red and blue. The quilts will be scrappy. We will be making Nine Patch Nonsense with blue in the corners, red in the north, south, east, west positions and gold (provided by guild) in the center position. We will cut the squares 6 inches. The instructions for making this block can be found on our blog under BOM and scrolling down to the post for October 1, 2007

Mark your calenders now and plan to come and join in the fun........

Nominating Committee Presents Slate of Officers for 2010-11

Mount Vernon members are stepping up and filling the slate for 2010-11 chapter officers! The Nominating Committee announced its slate at the February business meeting.

· President: Lynne Fishburn

· Co-Vice Presidents: Lynn Eccleston and Gigi Corbin

· Secretary: Angie Miller

· Treasurer: Dotty Eisenhour

· Nominating Committee: Ann Poulin

The committee is seeking volunteers for QU Show Rep for next year in order to ease the transition for the incoming board. Our job at next year’s show is programs and cards. Barbara Tucker will again head the Fundraising Committee.

The nominating process doesn’t close until April 27, 2010 when the voting takes place. Sooo, if you would like to serve and the committee hasn’t contacted you, or if you’d like to recommend someone for an office, it’s still possible for members to throw a quilt in the ring…. Contact Libby Dudley (Chair), Rhonda Adams or Gigi Corbin.

37th Annual Quilters Unlimited Show --Vendor Committee Update

Spring greetings from the 37th Annual Quilters Unlimited Vendor Committee. I hope that you have stashed all your heavy sweaters and are enjoying this fabulous spring weather. Saturday I opted for sweeping the patio of unswept fall leaves and doing a bit of outdoor clean-up while my fabric sat waiting for attention. However, enjoying the outdoors revitalized my urge to quilt, and I have visions of spring colors ready to be fondled!

The Vendor Committee recently met for a working afternoon. With our 85 vendors in place, we are now concentrating on pinning down the details. The layout committee has decided to move the quilts to the center of the room; therefore, there will be a major overhaul of the vendor locations. I am currently working with Expo Center staff to reset the vendor floor-plan.

The show is only two months away!!! Can you believe it?? I am excited about the show and hope that you get a chance to come out and see it, and that you find it as exciting as I believe it will be.

As of the last meeting, volunteers were still needed. Please take a moment to sign up as a volunteer! Many hands make light work.

Happy Quilting,

Carol Kunkel

Kathy Edwards will take donations of used rotary cutter blades to donate to a local artist. Kathy Zahaczewsky reminded everyone that the Woodlawn Needlework show runs through the end of March.
