Cut (2) 6 “squares that contrast with each other, a light and a dark. Repeat this process until you have 6 sets...a total of 12 squares. If you want your pinwheels to be all the same continue on making 24 half-square triangles as instructed below. If you are making your quilt “scrappy” choose fabrics that always have contrast so that your pinwheel can be easily seen.

Place two contrasting squares right sides together. Draw a diagonal line across the back of one square. Sew a scant ¼ “on each side of the line. Cut on the drawn line and press seam allowance toward the dark fabric.

For perfect pinwheels, square up each half square triangle before continuing. Using a square ruler with a diagonal line, place the diagonal line on the “ditch” of the seam and “square” the block to 5 ½”.

Lay out four blocks, turning them to make the pinwheel as shown. When you sew two together, nest the seams so that they come together at the center point. Make a total of 6 pinwheel blocks for now, and another 6 blocks for later.
