Amish Quilt Auction

Kathy E. had the opportunity to attend the Annual Amish Quilt Auction held the Saturday before Thanksgiving in St. Mary’s County, Maryland. The auction is held to raise money for the medical needs of members of the local Amish community. The auction is held in an Amish family’s lumber barn and lasts all day (9:00-5:00). While the auctioneer takes bids on items ranging from baby quilts, to birdhouses, to kid’s wooden rockers, to King size quilts, to finely crafted wood furniture, the Amish women sell their baked goods at unbelievably low prices. Kathy paid $2.50 for a dozen homemade chocolate chip cookies that were fresh from the oven. They also sell homemade chicken noodle soup to keep your insides warm since there is no heat or other electricity in the barn. The auction is open to the public and occurs every year on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. If you haven’t been to one of these auctions, Kathy highly recommends it.
