President’s Message

Greetings from Ruth

Our quilting year is off and running and what a good year it promises to be!  Mt. Vernon is an awesome group because of all the wonderful and talented people who work so hard to make our chapter a fun and friendly place to be. There are some wonderful programs and workshops planned, so read all about them and sign up.

The bus trip to Pennsylvania was a really special.  Thanks to Mary Downey for her behind the scenes planning and “Miss Andrea” our tour leader.  Of course, I found some great goodies and took lots of pictures of quilts.  Weren’t they something?

Speaking of wonderful, the 2013 Raffle Quilt was just that. The incredible quilting and batik blocks make for a truly stunning work of art.  Some lucky person will win it next June and I hope it is me!  Angie Miller is coordinating the raffle ticket sales.  She has some new ideas for selling all 6000 tickets.  Let’s all work together and sell tickets.  We can do it!

Our Auction is quickly approaching, November 13th.  In the coming weeks, much of our thoughts and efforts will be focused toward “getting things finished”.  My basket is nearly complete, my jars of jam are ready, and I have a few other goodies to bring too.  On Auction day, it is exciting to walk in and see our meeting room full of beautiful quilts and wonderful items.

October Letter from Co-VPs Barbara and Libby

The quilt world certainly offers us an avalanche of learning opportunities. Every shop, magazine, book, and show displays delicious quilts and fabric goodies to create for family, friends, community, and ourselves. And, guess what, your chapter jumps right in too! Teachers! Starting out the year with a virtual trip to Panama, Phyllis Twigg Hatcher spoke about the intricate reverse appliqué Molas of the San Blas Islands. It should be a real feast for the eyes when you finish up and show off your Chesapeake Bay Crab Molas from the workshop! There are still a few spaces for Judy Shapiro’s “Beading for Quilters” beaded fig leaf workshop on Oct. 24, and she will do a trunk show of her liturgical quilting, and her beading and appliqué, on Oct. 23. MV-member early-bird registrations for workshops with Eileen Doughty (Jan.), Lynn Eccleston and Ro Coller (Feb.), Georgia Bonesteel (Mar.), and Karen Combs (May) will begin at the October 9 Business Meeting – might like to bring your checkbook! To get a head start – review the new entries in “MVQU Workshop Descriptions/Supply List” at right of the screen. All of programs and workshops and special events for the year, with times and locations, are also in a table for you to download. Just think, these tasty offerings are only a few of the quilt world’s exhilarating experiences; the mind boggles.

November 13, 2012 Auction

OUR AUCTION IS COMING ON TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 2012, AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!  Our auction is just six weeks away and in order to have a great auction we need the help and participation of each and every one of you.  We hope you’ll join in, in helping us get all this work done - after all, MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK!!!  Together we can make this auction memorable AND profitable.

This year’s Auction is going to have several parts.  We will have a Live Auction, a Silent Auction, and a Chance Auction.  We will also have a White Elephant Sale table, a Buy It Now Boutique and Bake Sale.  Our Café Area will be offering lunch consisting of a yummy homemade portion of Ro’s Southern Secret Recipe Chicken Salad on a bed of hand-picked field greens served with a fresh fluffy dinner roll. A bottle of icy-cold water completes this meal for only $5.00.  Click *Here* for all the details on how you can help make this year’s Auction successful.

Raffle Quilt “Celtic Celebration” Update

Way to go Mount Vernon! As of September 20, we have sold 590 raffle tickets. The challenge is out and some of you are taking it on. There will be a very nice gift for the member who sells the most tickets by our April 2013 business meeting.

On the other hand, we need members to show Celtic Celebration at Chapter Visits.  It would be particularly helpful to sign up if you are a member of another chapter.  The goal is for two Mt. Vernon members to attend each visit. This quilt is a beauty, but she sure is big…I do not have a twin and I am vertically challenged to boot…So please help with one of the visits if you can. Ruth and I will show the quilt at the QU Fall Lecture on Sunday, October 14, at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, Vienna, VA.  Gail Garber is the guest Speaker.

The quilt is pictured on the QU Website and our Blog.  Tickets are 6 for $5 or $1 each. Remember to bring your checkbook to our chapter meetings.  Committee members include: Rosemary Coller, Pat Alfredson, Mary Downey, Lynne Fishburn, Patricia Bolton, Libby Dudley, Mary Mazzuchi, Beth Smith, Ruth Morgan, Joyce Keating, Anne Poulin, and Gigi Corbin.

Please show your support and pride in what we as a guild have created. If every member buys just 6 for $5, the odds are better that one of us will get to take home this beautiful quilt, Celtic Celebration.

Angela Miller
Mt. Vernon Raffle Committee Chair

5th Tuesday Community Service

Mark your calendar for Tuesday, October 30th.  Our first Charity Workshop for this year.   will be making flannel baby blankets. This project requires two (2) pieces of prewashed flannel, one 40 inches square and one 30 inches square, plus coordinating thread.  That’s it!  Flannel shrinks, so wash your flannel before the workshop.  Mary Downey will be leading this workshop.  If you do not have flannel, come anyway, we have some donated pieces and can use the extra hands.  Let’s make some blankets.  Here is a video that will give you an idea of how easy they are to make.

Community Relations
We display quilts for a month at a time in the Hollin Hall office at the Sherwood Library.  If you have a quilt you are donating or have one you’d like to ‘show off’, please consider letting us display it for  a month.  We’d also like to find other places to display our passion, so if you know of a friendly venue, let me know and I’ll contact them.

Jill Crispino, Community Relations Chair

 Farewell Blocks

Feel like sewing but not ready to dive into a big project or you just have a few minutes, consider making a Farewell Block.  A collection of blocks are given to members who are leaving the area as a memento of their association with Mt. Vernon QU.  We would like to always have a supply of blocks on hand.   Instructions for a 9 1/2 inch nine patch friendship square block can be found on our Blog’s sidebar under MVQU Info.  The center star should be of a medium or dark colored solid or print. The border material should be either white or cream.  Our goal is to have our departing members leave with enough squares to make a small quilt.  Please return your finished blocks to Pat Alfredson.

Are you ready for a Mystery?

Mary Mazzuchi and Pat Alfredson have planned a Mystery Quilt.  Part 1 of the mystery was distributed at the September Business meeting and is available on the Blog as well.  To find the instructions just look for Mystery Quilt on the sidebar.   It is not too late to join in on the fun.  Our plan is to show our quilts at the June Luncheon.

Bad Weather and Cancellation Policy
Sitting here in early October enjoying comfortable 70 degree temps, it is hard to imagine winter weather, but the weatherman assures us it is coming.  When weather comes, Hollin Hall follows Fairfax County GOVERNMENT closures.  If the County government offices are closed, then Hollin Hall is closed. If there is a question about weather conditions on any meeting, program or workshop day, please look for an eblast.  We will make a decision and let our members know.  That being said, please be careful and use your own good judgment.  No one wants anyone to drive anywhere when road safety is a question or sidewalks are slippery.  Here’s hoping for sunny, clear skies on all our Tuesday afternoons!

Bidding Starts at 25 cents
25 cents you say?  That’s right you heard it here first.  Bidding starts at 25 cents.  Cardinal Quilters extends an invitation to all Mt. Vernon members to attend their Annual Auction on October 12, 2012.  The Auction begins at 10 am in the Fellowship Hall of Trinity United Methodist Church, 2911 Cameron Mills Road, Alexandria, VA 22302.

MVQU BUSINESS MEETING
SEPTEMBER 11, 2012

The meeting was called to order at 12:30 PM by President, Ruth Morgan.

Ellen Icochea , formerly from the Vienna chapter, was introduced as a new member.

Ruth Morgan reminded us to wear our name tags.

Lynn Miller agreed to transport and set up the banner for meetings.

The new Board members and Committee Chairs were introduced.

Minutes of the previous meeting were approved as submitted.

Chapter Survey results were discussed.  Surveys were returned by 39 members.  The  following comments were the most universal:

Members were enthusiastic about our activities and what we offer and that friendships we make are valued highly.
We need to work on future QU responsibilities and how to recruit for same.

The survey showed a continuing lack of interest in Big QU functions.

(Libby Dudley, Patricia Bolton and Jill Crispino  will report further on options we might consider.)

Treasurer, Mary Downey presented the budget for 2012-13.  As of this date we have a generous balance.  There are 79 members, with 16 former members not signed up so far.  Mary discussed the items in the budget.  Beth Smith suggested that we spend more on charity and education rather than on ourselves (i.e. June luncheons).  It was suggested that we need to spend more energy on education to young people.  We could present programs on the history of quilting to middle school children.  Margaret Chandler suggested that we invite the community to the Bonesteel lecture.  Following the discussion, a motion was made and seconded to approve the budget as presented.

(It was suggested that we set up an education committee to plan events for the future.)

Programs for 2012-13
Libby presented the list of programs and workshops for the coming year.  The October newsletter will contain details  and dates of the workshops and signup sheets will be available on the blog.  Early bird sign up prices will be available on the blog.  The workshops will all be held at Heritage Presbyterian Church on Ft. Hunt Road.

Mystery Quilt
Pat Alfredson and Mary Mazzuchi discussed some of the details of the mystery quilt they have chosen for the year.  The lst installment of the quilt will be put on the blog.  They recommended that all fabrics be washed before proceeding.  The rest of the directions for the quilt will be on the blog in October, November and December. It was decided that the quilts would be shown at the June luncheon.

Friendship Star blocks for departing members
Pat suggested that when members move away (i.e. Sierra Smith who has recently moved) that they be presented with 20 friendship star blocks.  The members agreed.  The pattern will be on the blog (9 ½ inch blocks with white or off white background).  The blocks can be turned in at any of the meetings or bees.

Bus Trip
Andrea Gribble outlined the plans for the bus trip to Philadelphia on Sept. 13.  There will be games, movies and snacks available.  There are still spaces on the bus.

Auction
Andrea announced that Ro Coller is collecting items for the auction.  Ro will also be in charge of the bake and food sale.  We need members to sign up to volunteer to help out in a variety of ways at the event.  We need more items for the auction such as gift baskets, meals in a bag, food items, etc.  There will be a luncheon available during the event for a reasonable cost.

Newsletter
Lynne Fishburn thanked Mary Downey for her work on the newsletter and blog.  She asked that a deadline be set for the 4th Tuesday of the month for items to be included in the newsletter.  She would like to limit email “blasts” to once a week.  Please tell Lynne by 9 AM on Mondays if you have items for the blast.  She has set up new tabs on the blog to make finding different sections easier.

QU Raffle Quilt
The quilt was displayed for the first time at the meeting.  Beth Smith reported that the quilt measures 103 x 103.  There are 204 bulls eye blocks with appliqué in the center and around the edges.  She thanked Pat Alfredson and Ro Coller who designed the center appliqué, Ro and Pat who worked on the layout, Mary Downey who sewed the blocks together and Ro and Pat who drew on the appliqué.  Also, Patricia Bolton applied the binding and Libby made the sleeve and Patricia Bolton attached it.  The quilt has been appraised at $2,800.  Raffle tickets will be $1, 6 for $5 or 30 tickets for $25.  We need members to attend other chapter meetings and present the quilt and sell tickets.  Also, if there are other groups that you attend, neighborhood gatherings, soccer games, etc. let Angie know and we can arrange to sell tickets at those events. There will be a prize for the member selling the most tickets.

2012-13 QU Quilt Show
Cindy Grimord, Quilt Show Chairman, and Joanne Fitzgerald, Big QU President outlined plans for the show.  We were thanked for all our work on the 2012 show.  Kay Burnett, who is in charge of producing the CD of the show has plans for photographing the quilts when they are registered at the various chapters so that a CD can be made to sell at the show.  In preparation for this Big QU is giving each chapter 2 quilt stands  along with black drapes and rings for photographing the quilts.  The quilts need to be totally completed, including the label, before pictures are taken.
The challenges for the show include red and white quilts and quilts portraying the theme of “40 Something” to celebrate the 40th year of the show.
Joanne congratulated us on our raffle quilt.  She is having fun visiting the chapters and asked members to call her if they have questions for her.  She said that the QU logo is being updated.  They need folks to work on the web site and suggest ways to spend excess funds of big QU.

Community Outreach
Jill Crispino will be asking for loan of quilts to be displayed in the Senior Center office and the Sherwood Hall Library.  They will be on display for one month at a time.  They should be smaller quilts.  She is also looking for suggestions for further outreach projects.

Community Service
Lynn Miller showed us a blanket (designed by Mary Downey) that is made with a 30 inch piece of flannel and a 40 inch piece of flannel.  A workshop will be held on the Tuesday  October 30 at 11:00 to make these blankets.  They will be sent to Carpenter’s Shelter and United Community Ministries (UCM) for small children.  Also, she will be collecting other quilts for all ages to be presented to these organizations.  Please tell her of any other donations you make so she can keep a chart of all of our donations.

Door prizes and show and tell were presented at the conclusion of the business meeting.

                                Respectfully submitted, Dotty Eisenhour, Secretary
