Co-Presidents' Message
Hi, Quilters,
January is a memory now and a very good one, too. Bunnie Jordan's presentation was very informative and well attended. We had many visitors from other chapters.
We hope you are all ready for a very busy February. On the 7th, Jill Crispino is doing an origami ornament workshop during the bee in Room 216. We already have 14 signed up. Our business meeting on Valentine's day will include a discussion of the findings of the ad hoc fiscal committee. We'll have the items produced at the charity workshop and the Holiday challenge for show and tell. Jean Ann Wright is coming on the 28th for a lecture and her Circle of Nine workshop on the 29th. Good thing there was an extra day this month so we could fit everything in.
Many thanks to Pat Alfredson for stepping up to handle the big QU job of Boutique Chair. We still are looking for a Boutique Chair for Mt. Vernon, so please think about volunteering. Speaking of the upcoming quilt show, are you getting those sleeves on your quilts and getting them ready for measuring and photographing? We hope Mt. Vernon has good participation this year.
Happy Quilting!
Ruth and Ro
Vice President's Message
The program schedule is picking up. After a break in November with the auction and the luncheon in December, I’ve had some time to gather myself for the second half of this quilt year. We had a very exciting and informative trunk and slide show with Bunnie Jordan speaking on quilts from the Civil War era. Over 60 members and guests attended the program. The following day the workshop was fast moving and informative. Wow, the treasures we got to see and touch and fondle! The quilts shared by the workshop participants were varied and oh so beautiful.

One 1840s quilt even caught the interest of the two museum representatives in the group.

Jean Ann Wright will be here soon.
Jean Ann’s technique book, Circle of Nine Quilts, is inspiring and this new technique provides very interesting options for block placement.

There are still spots available in this February 29th workshop. If you are interested or just curious, please sign up soon. There is a little prep work that needs to be done before the workshop. Jean Ann is reputed to be very funny and her lecture, the “Quilts in My Suitcase: The Life of a Traveling Quilt Editor” promises to be quite entertaining.
The workshop registration form is available on the blog, check it out under forms.

Nominating Committee

The time has come, and the search is on. Because Mount Vernon QU leadership is made up of volunteers and not contractors (now there is a dream!), you are each invited to step up and have a part in leading MVQU’s agenda of activities and friendship forward for the chapter-year July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013. Committee members Libby Dudley (Chair), Barbara Dove, and Sierra Smith are the ones to contact in order to volunteer. You don’t have to wait for us to contact you! Slate positions are President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Nominating Committee Chair. Job descriptions can be found in the Bylaws, available on the MVQU blog. In addition, if you have your eye on a committee for next year, also get in touch...filling these positions early is a great assist for Board planning. The committee list can also be found on the blog. Mount Vernon is You and You are Mount Vernon. And Mount Vernon is great programs, organized meetings, interesting workshops, awesome show and tells, fun trips, friendly bees, an amazing fundraiser, generous community service workers, fabulous munchies, and an outstanding blog and newsletter; all of it brought about by talented and caring members. Remember, no contractors, only us. To do your part, nominations and committee positions are open --- don’t wait, call or email now!
-- Libby Dudley, Chair.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

MVQU will furnish the March 1-31 display for the Martha Washington Library. If you have miniature to small quilts or interesting quilting books or items to lend, please be in touch. Also, the call is out again for lap-size quilts, with or without hanging sleeve, to display at Hollin Hall and Sherwood Regional Library starting with March. Thanks again to those who have lent pieces so far this year. They have all garnered appreciative comments. Contact: Chair Libby Dudley

FABRIC EXCHANGE-- a Bow Tie Block due May 2012

Pat Alfredson and Mary Mazzuchi present Mt. Vernon's 2011-2012 Block Exchange --6" Bow Tie Blocks. Participating members will swap blocks on May 8, 2012. you may swap 1, 2, 3, 4 or more sets, but EACH set you make should be a different "tie" batik fabric in a light or medium hue. The background fabric should be Kona black, which the Variety Store has available. A set consists of 18 blocks. The more sets you swap, the larger your quilt... 4 sets will give you enough blocks to make a lap size quilt.

For each set of blocks that you swap, you need these fabrics:
1/2 yard Batik fabric in light to medium hue for the "Ties"
1/3 yard Kona black fabric for "Background"

Instructions:
For each 18 block set wash, press and remove selvages from fabric.
From the batik fabric cut 3 strips, 3 ½ “ X 42”. Sub cut into 3 ½” squares. You need 36.
From the batik fabric cut 2 strips, 2” X 42”. Sub cut into 2” squares. You need 36.
From the Kona black fabric, cut 3 strips, 3 ½” X 42”. Sub cut into 3 ½” squares. You need 36.

Mark a diagonal line on the back of each 2” batik square. Place a 2” batik square, right sides together in one corner of each 3 ½” black square.

Sew on the diagonal line.
Flip triangle up towards corner and press. Trim seam allowance.
Arrange 4 squares to make a Four Patch Bow Tie block as shown.

In addition, you can watch this video on "youtube"--mind you that the dimensions are not same as here but it will help you if you need to see someone put the corner on and blocks together http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bh4cwyI5-b4

The blocks should measure 6 ½’ X 6 ½” unfinished. A sign up list is available at the meetings and bees. If you wish to participate, please sign up or contact Pat or Mary to have your name added to the list. Once again, blocks are due on or before May 8, 2012.

June Luncheon Block

THE 2012 QU QUILT SHOW REGISTRATION PROCESS
http://www.qushowentry.com

Registration Ends February 27, 2012

Who can register a quilt?
Any QU member in good standing may enter up to six quilts in the QU Quilt Show June 1-3,2012. If you belong to more than one chapter you must register under the chapter who holds your main membership not your associate membership. This is not a competition or a juried exhibit; it is an opportunity to show your fabulous quilts to a very appreciative audience.

Why do we need to register online?
Having all the information online ensures that all information is correct, entered in the right place and can be used simultaneously by all the different show committees. This registration system greatly improves the process of letting a quilt through the entire line-up of committees and hanging in the desired location correctly.

How do I enter a quilt?
*Simply go to http://www.qushowentry.com and follow the instructions on the screen. It is very straightforward and easy process. It is best to have all your information ready before you start the registration process.
*If you do not have a computer you can fill out a paper form, bring it to us and we’ll register your quilt for you. We will have some blank paper forms available at the meetings. This process is much simpler than it seems and you will be surprised at how well you fare on your own.

Any helpful hints?
Have all of your information gathered in one place before beginning, including your personal contact info, the name of the designer or pattern, name of the challenge or names of other quilters who worked on the quilt

Decide in advance the priority numbers for your quilts. Register them in order from one to six. This is important in case some quilts have to be eliminated due to the number of registrations received.

The maximum dimension of any quilt cannot exceed 115” x 115”. The final dimension will be determined when you bring your quilt to be measured and photographed by the
quilt collectors. You will not input the dimensions of your quilt during the registration process.

You must register all of your quilts at the same time. If you finish the registration process and realize you have forgotten to enter a quilt please contact your quilt collector for instructions.

Once you fill out all the information, hit the “submit” button in order to finish the process. Once it has been entered, you will not be able to edit the entry. If you realize there has been a mistake contact your quilt collector and they can make a correction for you.

The online system will assign a number for each quilt artist and each quilt, you do not have to remember these numbers but you DO need to print out the confirmation page you receive at the end of the online registration which will have this information. You should also receive an email from the system with this information.

Each challenge entry must have the same “standard/official” name listed or they will not hang together. MVQU’s challenge titles are A Walk on the Wild Side and Your Favorite Holiday.

All fields must be completed on the forms even if your name is the answer for several of the fields.

In the Description area you are allowed 350 characters only, and spaces count as characters, to describe your quilt and tell its story.

What needs to happen after you register on-line?
Print out the confirmation page and bring it with your “show ready” quilt to us on the dates listed below. Each quilt must be measured and photographed. We will enter this information online.

What is a “show ready” quilt?
A quilt that is completely finished, has a hanging sleeve at least 4 inches deep, has a label with the quilters name/chapter/quilt name/telephone number sewn on the bottom right corner of the back of the quilt and each quilt must arrive in a fabric carrying sack with the same information listed above (plastic bags of any kind are unacceptable).
When will the pictures and measurements be taken?
Since registration can detract from our regular meetings we will be available one hour before and after the Business and Program meetings. On Bee days we will be available from 12:30 to 2:30.If you cannot attend one of the following dates, then contact us to make arrangements. You may ask a friend to bring your quilt for measuring and photos if you cannot come to one of the dates listed (be sure your friend has a copy of your confirmation page).

Dates:
February 14th Business Meeting
February 21st Bee
February 28th Program Meeting

What is the deadline?
The last day you can register you quilt online is February 27th. The last day you can have your quilt measured and photographed is February 28th. These two dates are not negotiable.

Your Quilt Collectors are: Lynne Fishburn 703.888.2596 and Angie Miller

Upcoming Area Shows, Exhibits and More

The Virginia Quilt Museum will open the new exhibit season on February 1, 2012, with “Shenandoah Valley Counterpanes” and “Art Under A Microscope.”

These new exhibits will be open until May 12. In addition, rare Civil War quilts made in the Valley, twentieth century quilts and sewing machines from the
Museum’s collection will be featured in additional galleries.
Counterpanes are a type of bedcover, often white-work or white fabric with elaborate white quilting or stitching on it. Guest curators, Beverley and Jeff Evans will show white-work bedcovers produced in the Shenandoah Valley during the 1800s. These textiles are from private and institutional collections. Most have not been publically displayed.
The historic counterpanes will be the subject of the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Art’s biennial Textile Seminar to be held in Harrisonburg March 14-17. This is the first time the Winston-Salem, North Carolina, museum has held their Textile Seminar outside their own museum. Speakers and students at the seminar will study the exhibit at the Virginia Quilt Museum.
In contrast, “Art Under A Microscope” is inspired by the beauty of scientific photographs taken through microscopes. This unique collection of twenty art quilts, created by the group Fiber Artists @ Loose Ends, will be exhibited for the first time outside a medical facility. Colorful and dramatic, these quilts show us the beauty of nature within the human body.
“Shenandoah Valley Counterpanes” and “Art Under A Microscope” can be seen at the Virginia Quilt Museum from February 1 through May 12. The Museum is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm at 301 South Main Street, Harrisonburg, VA. Parking in the municipal lot behind the museum is free. Minutes of the January 10, 2012 MVQU Business Meeting

The meeting was called to order by Co-President Ruth Morgan at 12:35 p.m. Ruth welcomed members and guests. With no corrections, the November Minutes stand as presented.

VP and Program Chair Carol Kunkel reported that Bunnie Jordan will be at MVQU January 24 with a Civil War Trunk Show. There are 2-3 spots available for Jordan’s Jan. 25 workshop “Hit Parade of Quilting” to which members can bring one quilt for examination and discussion. Jean Ann Wright lectures on Feb. 28, followed by a workshop on Feb. 29 demonstrating her new technique found in “Circle of Nine Quilts,” a book written by Wright and her sister. In March, plans are to have a presentation by Laurette Koserowski, editor of Quilting Magazine. In April, Karen Stone will do a lecture and workshop. There are only 2-3 spots open for the Karen Stone workshop.

Treasurer’s Report account balance was reviewed.

QU Fall Event: Co-President Ro Coller reported that around 5 MVQU members attended the October 15 evening event at NOVA Annandale, noting that MVQU reserved the venue, set up the room, made speaker arrangements, and supplied refreshments as part of its QU Matrix tasks for 2011-12. Susan Carlson of Maine presented a well-received lecture to approximately 70 attendees.

Hospitality: Chair Barbara Dove thanked everyone who participated the first part of the year. The sign up chart will be passed around for February through May. Today’s hostesses were Dotty Eisenhour, Dianne Tippins and Joan Peake.

2013 QU Raffle Quilt: Mary Downey revealed the Raffle Quilt top she completed over the holidays. Mary borrowed the Fons & Porter easy diagonal quilt ruler for the setting triangles from Ro and highly recommends using it for the setting triangles. It made for a much smoother process.

Nickel Exchange: Co-Chair Pat Alfredson said most of the black and white fabric exchange blocks have been passed out. In honor of Valentines Day, Red and White 5” blocks will be the theme for January’s exchange; details to follow on the website. Bring the squares to the January 24th meeting.

Holiday Quilt Challenge: Co-Chair Pat Alfredson reminded members that the challenge started in October and is due at the business meeting in February. Depict your favorite holiday – a real one or vacation or your interpretation. Note that the allowable circumference has changed – it is now 264 inches maximum (60”x72”); any size up to and including that is fine. It should be quilted and bound, and if it’s going in the QU Show, it should be “show ready” with a hanging sleeve and label (see QU website).

5th Tuesday Charity Workshop: Ruth announced for Chair Lynn Miller that all are invited all to participate in the Tuesday, January 31st workshop making Disappearing 4-Patch or 4 to 9 Patch blocks. These blocks will be made with 5” squares to finish at 8.5”. The suggestion is to use the donated jewel blocks from Timeless Treasures or bring your own 5-inch square small prints that read as a solid and neutrals with good contrast in colors. Lynn will provide block directions on the blog.

December 2011 Luncheon: The membership thanked Tammy Mannarino and Co-Chair Anne Poulin for their December Luncheon planning. The “Starry, Starry Night” theme was well received with several blue and white Ohio Star blocks collected. And the gift-wrapped UFO exchange was an exciting finish to the festive afternoon. Thanks Again, Tammy and Anne!

QU Quilt Registration: Chair, Lynne Fishburn announced the Good News that the quilt registration process has not changed from last year. Lynn has created a registration worksheet to complete for each quilt you want to enter. Both the worksheet and the quilt entry process can be found on the blog. The worksheet is especially helpful to complete before entering quilts online. Lynn or Angie will be available to photograph quilts at Bees and Meetings. The last day to register your quilt online is February 27th. The last day to have your quilt measured and photographed is February 28th. These two dates are not negotiable. Your Quilt Collectors are: Lynne Fishburn 703.888.2596 and Angie Miller 703.360.7306. You can reach us by email us at:
mvququiltcollector@gmail.com

Mt. Vernon’s 2012 QU Show Boutique Responsibility: This QU Position continues to remain open. Ro Coller again called for a MVQU member to step up to serve as chair of this QU show task. Ro and Ruth have been attending the QU show meetings; however a chair is needed immediately to handle details of conducting the boutique at the show. The major tasks involved include: 1) Set Up Boutique, 2) Collect items from other Chapters, and 3) Disperse Items. The 2011 show after-action report is available to review and provides information on the tasks involved. This is an important fund-raiser for all chapters, so please consider chairing. 2012 Boutique show volunteers get discounted entry and are recruited by QU Volunteer Committee. You can also step up to chair Mt. Vernon’s own Boutique Committee and manage items MV members will contribute for sale at the show. Last year Mt. Vernon raised about $450 from this event alone.

Ornament Workshop: Jill Crispino announced that she will be offering a free Fabric Origami Ornament Workshop to be held February 7th in the Bee room upstairs. She will provide materials for the workshop so that items can be donated to the upcoming Auction. A materials list and directions will be provided to make more to keep.

Redwork Blocks: Ruth displayed several hand-stitched Redwork Blocks that her husband’s Grandmother made. She would like someone to piece the blocks into a quilt top for our upcoming auction. She asked that anyone interested see her after the meeting.

Yoyoville Quilt Sign-Up: Ro showed a picture of a charming quilt project for the auction in November. She passed around a sign-up sheet for those interested in working on the quilt.

Retreat: Chair Andrea Gribble announced the dates for this year’s retreat to be set for April 30, May 1 and May 2. She is collecting room deposits that will be needed soon to secure the timeframe and use of the Eagle Room.

Field Trip to Prince Frederick: Ro announced that the previous trip to the home of a retired fabric business friend was so successful she is organizing another trip. Sign up now for a weekend date in February to be determined.

Mid Atlantic Quilt Show Volunteers: The Vienna Chapter is in need of white glove volunteers to help with the Raffle Quilt on Saturday, February 25th. If you plan to be in the area that day, please consider volunteering. Next year Mt. Vernon will be promoting the Raffle Quilt at the show.

QU Directory: There have been printing problems with some QU Directories. Please let the Presidents know if your directory has printing errors.

Door Prizes: Chair Ann Marlin announced winners: Ann Marlin, Sierra Smith, Nancy Barkume, and Jill Crispino.

Following Show and Tell, the meeting was adjourned at 2:15 pm by Co-President Ruth Morgan.

Respectfully
submitted,
Jim Melton, Secretary
