President’s Message
The pumpkins are in the market, the days are getting shorter, and Halloween decorations are everywhere. Where did September go? It was a busy month for us all starting with the September 11th meeting. The decision was made that this year we would contribute quilts to the “For Children’s Sake” home. It is a most worthwhile project to offer comfort and support to children in need. We hope many of you are already working on a quilt to donate at the Christmas luncheon. After hearing from the committees about their planned events for the coming year we concluded with a very large and inspiring “Show & Tell” collection.

“Back to School” was the theme of our regular meeting. Many thanks to our teachers, Kathy Edwards, Ro Coller, Barbara Zygiel, Joyce Keating, and Rhonda Adams. They were great at teaching “old dogs” new tricks. There always seems to be more than one way to do everything. To complete a lovely afternoon, hospitality was provided by Jim Melton, Gail English, and Kathleen Shaw.

After enjoying such a full September we are now on our way to our Silent Auction to be held on October 23rd. This is our one and only fund raising event, and it plans to be bigger and better than ever!!!! We need everyone to participate with donations and their checkbooks as well. The cut off date for accepting items for the Silent Auction will be Tuesday, October 9th.

We certainly look forward to another wonderful, exciting year.

Beth and Cathy

A Little History

The Mount Vernon Chapter of Quilters Unlimited started in June 1972. A group of women met at the Martha Washington Library to form a quilting group. Mary Pepe was Acting President of the Martha Washington Bee. They joined the organized group on December 13, 1972. The name Quilters Unlimited was chosen for this organized group on January 17, 1973. In March 1973, the Martha Washington Bee became the Martha Washington Chapter. The summer 1973 newsletter referred to our Chapter as the Alexandria Martha Washington Chapter and at that time Mary Pepe was President. NEWS OF QUILTERS UNLIMITED newsletter, dated September/October 1973, referred to us as the Alexandria Chapter and also as the Martha Washington Day Group, and we were now meeting at the Sherwood Hall Library. Sometime in 1973, our name was changed to our present name, the Mount Vernon Chapter.

Fund Raising
Pat Alfredson reported on the plans for the silent auction on October 9. There will be:
Food sales
Fat quarter packages (to be put in jars provided)
Quilt kits
Finished products
Fixed price table – no bid
Buy now table i.e., Ebay
Live auction (Kathy Hanratty) (following silent auction)

A discussion followed about how to get the word out to the community about the auction. Some suggestions were: poster board signs, Craig's list, newspaper articles, flyers to distribute. It was suggested that we indicate when the silent auction will close and the live auction begin, so folks will not miss out on a chance to bid on items.

Quilt Show
Beth Smith and Cathy Hanratty attended the first meeting for the 2008 QU show. We still need a chairman from the guild for the show – perhaps two or three people so that the monthly meetings can be covered. The meetings are the 1st Tuesdays of each month in a venue to be announced. We will be responsible for finding volunteers in all the areas of the show.

The price for admission will be $10 on Friday, $10 on Saturday and $8 on Sunday. If you are a volunteer, and work a two hour shift, you may get a three day ticket for $10. Also if you take any classes you can get the $10 three day ticket.

For the first time, it was decided that strollers will be allowed at the show.

Winter Quilt-In
Mt. Vernon has been chosen to be the lead for the event and also to be in charge of the food. We are still looking for a venue – perhaps Lake Braddock High School. Barbara Elder, Jim Melton and Margaret Chandler have agreed to be on the committee for the quilt in.

Fall Quilt-In
The Fall Quilt In is being combined with the Fall Speaker. This will take place on Thursday, October 18 from 3:00 – 9:00. Pepper Cory will give a lecture at 7:00.

New Business
There was enthusiasm for a community project to make quilts “For Children's Sake.” These are children that are cared for before they can be placed in foster care. They range in age from birth to 21. Currently the age range is 5 yrs. to 11 yrs. They stay in the facility for 90-120 days. If you make a quilt for the project, Cathy Hanratty will make a label on her embroidery machine which will include a space for the child to add his or her name. There are currently 8 children in this facility. One suggestion was to make “quillows.” Rhonda suggested that we pick a date to turn in the quilts to the chapter and then deliver them all at one time. It was decided that the date would be the December luncheon.

It was suggested that, because the Tuesday bees are getting so large, maybe smaller bees could be held in member's homes. If anyone would like to hold a bee in there home, let the chapter know.

There was some discussion about charging members for speakers to help with the cost. No firm decision was reached.

Goals for the Year
More quilts in the show
More involvement by individual members.
Use a microphone for the meetings
Officers stand during the meeting and members speaking, come to the front.

Rhonda will organize a BOM (Blog of the Month) starting in October. Each month will feature a different technique. Gail English offered to present a Block of the Month.

Featherweight machines
UCM has two featherweight machines for sale for $250 each. Call Nancy Burns 703-971-5170 for more information.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:45 PM.

Respectfully submitted,
Dotty Eisenhour, Secretary
