Cherry Blossoms on the Potomac

Our Auction items get better and better.  The remarkable queen size quilt measuring 88.25" x 106", called Cherry Blossoms on the Potomac, is the work of Lynn Miller, one of our very talented MVQU quilters.  The blocks were made by our chapter members and the blue fabric is Japanese Yukata fabric dating from 1970-1980.  Japanese Yukata, 100% cotton, hand printed fabric, is remarkably soft and durable.  It is used to make the summer kimono, Yukata, in Japan.  The colors are vibrant and incredibly lovely.  Lynn chose a wave quilting pattern reminiscent of the very famous woodblock print by the Japanese artist Hiroshige.  This quilt would make any room look glorious.

WALL HANGING 15” X 15”

This little gem of a wall hanging is the creation of Barbara Zygiel, a very talented member of our Mount Vernon Chapter of Quilters Unlimited.  She designed it as the answer to one of our guild challenges.  Members were given a vintage quilt block and asked to create something wonderful.  She not only answered the challenge, she designed a one of a kind wall hanging
Soft pastel color hexagons are appliquéd on a white background.  The wall hanging is machine pieced and hand appliquéd and quilted.
WALL HANGING 40" X 40"

Another one of Barbara Zygiel small quilt or wall hanging called “Benji’s Pockets” a pattern by Acorn Quilts which Barbara reduced.  It is hand pieced, appliquéd and quilted.  What little boy would not be charmed by this charming quilt?

March 2015 Show & Tell

Judy Albert -- Peacock Passion for Art of the World Quilt Challenge
"I was inspired by the peacock motif from several artists -- Tiffany vases, the Peacock Room by Whistler and Beardsley's Salome peacock skirt.
The peacock represents beauty, dignity and immortality as well as pride and vanity.  It is the symbol of Goddesses Juno and Hera and of St. Barbara, and can also symbolize royalty.  The peacock motif was often used in the Impressionism, Post Impressionism and Art Nouveau art periods.  In ancient times, the peacock was the symbol of rebirth and eternal life.  The peacock in the quilt reflects the Japanese influence prevalent during the second half of the nineteenth century -- curvilinear shapes and florals.
Techniques used: embroidery, applique, machine quilting and embellishment.
Peacock pattern by Hatched in Africa, Crystal Pattern by Design by Dawn.
Material used: Hoffman Batik (839 Alabaster background, Marathon thread, Clover fusible bias tape, stones, beads and Swarovski crystals."

Baby Burp Cloth Instructions

Fabrics: quilting cotton for top; flannel, fleece, or terry cloth for back.  No batting needed.

Other supplies: a few pins, scissors, thread, bamboo skewer or chop stick, iron and pressing surface.

Choose two coordinating fabrics of at least 8.5” x 17” per burp cloth.  Fold fabric half way down the long side with wrong sides together, and press.  Do the same for the second fabric and layer them on top of each other at the fold.  Position the burp cloth pattern piece along the fold, pin in 3 places as marked on pattern, and cut out the two pieces at the same time.  Pin along fold line until ready to sew.

Notes on cutting: You can get two burp cloths per fat quarter, and 10 burp cloths per yard.  If cutting yardage, press complete piece of fabric first.  Make the first fold at 8.5” from selvage to selvage, with wrong sides together as noted above.  Do the same with the coordinating fabric and layer along fold line.  When cutting out burp cloth pattern, make sure the pattern is at least 1” away from the prior cuts along the fold to allow room for the bulbous ends of the burp cloth.  However, do not waste fabric between cuts or you won’t have room to get 5 burp cloths across the width of the fabric.  Once all 5 are cut, reposition fabric to make another fold at least 8.5” from the closest edges, and repeat the process.
Sizing: You can make the burp cloth larger by sliding the pattern piece 1-2 inches up from your fold line, and cutting 1-2” wider around the pattern piece.

Sewing:  With the fold line at the bottom, and raw edges up,  peel back the top and bottom fabrics, leaving a fabric and flannel pair, right sides together in the middle.  Remove the pin at the fold line, and shake out the fabric, making sure the pieces align correctly and are positioned  right sides together.  In the middle on one side, place two pins 3” apart.  With coordinating or contrasting thread, sew the long way around from one pin the other, using a ¼” seam allowance.  MAKE SURE TO INCLUDE BOTH TOP AND BOTTOM FABRICS IN THE SEAM ALLOWANCE.    Remove from machine, turn right side out through the opening left in the seam line, and run a bamboo skewer or chop stick all along the seam line from the inside, through the seam opening.  Once smooth, press the burp cloth, turning in the seam allowances at the opening.  Starting at the opening, top stitch around the whole burp cloth, staying right along the outer edge…if using your ¼” foot, place top stitching at 1/8”.  Press again to remove the ripple effect from the top stitching.

Serging: If you are using a serger, simply place the 2 pieces of fabric with wrong sides together, and serge once all the way around the outer edges on the right sides of the two pieces.  No turning, no top stitching.
